I'll re-articulate in the clearest possible terms. Dovetail are not working on steam at the moment. That means no improvements to steam mechanics on existing content or new steam content entirely for many months at least. I have very strong reason to believe there will not be any steam content for the next year and quite possibly 2025 too. Remember this all happened because of a rumour that they had actually genuinely abandonned steam in the literal sense of the word. Maybe they will pick it up later, hence *indefinitely* shelved. Some people also don't seem to know what indefinitely means: adverb for an unlimited or unspecified period of time.
But does that mean we are not getting the Update on WSR steam train gala timetable as was so excited four it. That would got me back into the game as stop playing TSW 3.
I didn’t play much TSW until they added steam engines. Hope they do add more steam routes eventually. And yes it would be good to see the coal and water need to be replenished.
One thing I was hoping for personally was a GWR Themed Steam Route, ideally from Swindon to Bristol with GWR Kings and Castles, plus Chocolate and Cream coaches. Heck, even run the Class 52 in Maroon on there. But looks like that won't be happening. Dovetail, how could you predictably screw up again
It’s DTG. Push out what they can to line there pockets, release unfinished lack lustre content, don’t fix the huge amount of problems with the game/games. That’s what they do. Please could someone bring out a train simulator to the likes of MSFS. DTG would be finished. But very sadly they hold monopoly on the rather niche game sim. It’s simple stop buying, then they either fold or they have to up there “game” so to speak.
Even msfs has issues with each major update and I've heard it can crash quite often. The problem with using msfs as a basis is that the closeup scenery is bad. Up high in the sky, you don't notice it but once you get up and personal, it's very low quality which doesn't work in a train simulator. With train sim you require really good ground scenery. Another issue is that licensing still applies. If they create the entire globe but nothing to actually run on them, it's pointless. Also not a fan of the dlc that could cost an arm and a leg. Some planes in msfs is hundreds of dollars but poorly built.
I still have Microsoft Train Simulator in my loft. I loved that it had a Japanese route. It'd be nice if Microsoft did another one themselves, but I can't see that being a good money-spinner. Like you, I'm ever hopeful though.
Im not suprised. The problem with Dovetail Games is that they don’t take responsibility for their own mistakes or listen to the community. Steam doesn’t do well because DTG never put the time or effort to do it well to begin with. Peak Forest is a route that lacks service variation and starts/ends in the middle of nowhere along with having the botched physics. Spirit of Steam doesn't capture the Spirit of Steam at all. That was nothing more than a CEO wanting to go back to memory lane. The Flying Scotsman's sounds and physics are also crap. If DTG is going to release crap products, then the sales will obviously reflect that. They should have started slow with steam and took their time rather that rushing a product the door as usual
In sim ways they also must a golden opportunity with ECML they choose the worst part of the route I wouod have gone with Newcastle to Doncaster via York and Leeds it’s the same with steem they have WSR why didn’t they put a steam locomotive on that route first

As it would give more time to get right the physics and sound etc. Dovetail need to build a whole new route. Should just do UK Heritage railways most of them are small under 20 miles in the UK. Plus don't have a big timetable only for events. Note I love UK steam train. I was so excited WSR steam train gala timetable. The low steam popularity could also be from players not liking steam. Steam isn't something everyone grew up with and the newer generation prefer the new shiny stuff instead of the older stuff. I personally find steam boring and slow and I've never grown up with steam
I think steam would be more popular in TSW if it was loco packs for railtours and heritage lines and if it was done better and more care and time was put into routes
Think it would be too massive of a project for them if they have to fix the steam simulation themselves. Not saying never but steam isn't an easy thing to do
I recently watched the Editor Masterclass video on Track and signals as I was considering getting back into TSW as they'd now got the editor (kinda) released. I managed 28 mins of what was like an 8 year old's show and tell. Seeing this I now realise just what a poorly organised, Dick Turpin company they are. I said a couple of years ago I wouldn't give them any more of my money. I'm now B___ slapping myself for even reconsidering that decision. Thanks for putting this out and putting me back on the straight and narrow.
A 3rd party would have to do it or dtg releases it using the same steam physics. It is still too large and complex and access might be limited since not many exist today
Steam traction doesn't translate well as a driving simulation experience. There is plenty of decent steam content on TSC and it looks great as AI in the landscape but it is impossible to recreate the smells, the extremes of temperature, the grime, the smuts and rain and snow in your face and the sheer physical exertion of shifting heavy levers or shovelling tons of coal on a wildly swaying engine. Coaxing a tune out of it is obviously a fun challenge but it will always feel flat for me sitting in a comfy chair at home. I suspect for most casual users diesel and electric traction just feels a lot more realistic to drive.
If they were doing more steam content they’d be working on improvements that would take a lot of time, not to mention actually building routes takes months too. We’re not getting steam content this year at least, hence indefinitely shelved.

@@thetrainguy4 well peak forest is my local heritage route ie peak rail I love the place but after watching it streamed I think actually on your channel I didn't like the look of it so never purchased it if the route was any good I'd have brought it and just made my own scenarios but I just wasn't impressed at all so never bothered it's a shame really because the route has a lot of history

How far they've fallen. Steam still works in TS classic and has for decades. These people are completely out of their depth, having completely alienated the engineering community that was ready to embrace an editor on day 1. Turns out Dovetail really needed that talent because they lack what it takes, despite the unreal engine, which is capable of so much more.

I am guessing cause of the takeover is trying to recoup costs. I am also guessing steam fans are as not as wide or as big as possible they say.

steam is not abandoned (even if it's "for now"), they just don't work on steam content at the moment. doesn't mean it's completely abandoned
