  • That History Lady explores how a young salesman named Montgomery Ward launched the world's first mail-order business for general goods in 1872. He pulled together new transportation technologies, the nation's burgeoning rural population of farmers spread across the Midwest, and his own flair for friendly salesmanship. And he always promised "satisfaction guaranteed or your money back." The Montgomery Ward catalog transformed the lives of many American farmers living in isolated pockets of the country and made Ward's one of America's most pioneering retailers.

This is the first time I leave a like on a youtube video -- I've been on youtube for more than 10 years. Great job.

Really captured the memory I was searching for. As a child with 7 siblings we got a badminton set from the Green Stamps Store. Fun day!

We need those to keep coming in the mail (postal), privacy from invasive internet online hackers etc. It's easier to secure personal mail & orders without everyone nosing in on privacy of individuals. Fast growing trees can be planted for the supply and demand as well environmental issues. While those fast growing trees are planted plant one for the slower growing trees and forests to replace the ones burn (expecially) the ones that burnt from arson, clear cutting due to hoggish corporations, etc. Would be good for economy I e. Jobs, homes, wild life, ozone layer, etc. 7/24/2021

Welsh entrepreneur Pryce Pryce-Jones set up the first mail-order company in 1861 in Newtown, Powys, Wales.

Very true! And Pryce-Jones deserves major credit for the idea. I should have mentioned this in the video so thanks for your note. The difference is that Pryce-Jones specialized in one category of merchandise, woollen goods, while Ward was the first to offer a wide selection of general merchandise
