  • In this video we demonstrate how we use an acid bath to heighten the contrast between the crystal and the background glaze color. We discuss the kind of acid we use, the duration of the acid bath, and the colorants that work best with this process.

Beautiful results, does the price include the hazardous pay fee? It should.
Welcome back to Florida where the sun helps give us electricity to power the kiln.
Hope you have a good turn out for the tour in December.
    Thanks for sharing!

Hello. I bought a clay wine cooler but it turned out to be glazed inside and out and is non-porous. Is it possible to remove the glaze easily with hydrochloric acid? Thanks.

I heard that one can use vinegar as the acid and then it is food safe. How long would you soak the pot or dish in vinegar? Would it be one hour like the acid you used?

Merry Christmas to you as well.

Regarding the acid etching - you can use a variety of acids to etch your crystalline glazed pieces but we use Sodium Bisulfate - we get a 3 lb bag of dry powder at the pool store. It is the PH Down material. We mix this in a 5 gal bucket of water.

Others prefer a strong Vinegar but that takes much longer to get the same results. When using Sodium Bisulfate, we expose things to the acid for 30 minute intervals - after each 30 minute soak, we wash it and dry it, then photograph the results. Once the desired effect is achieved, we know how long to etch pieces with that glaze to get the same result.

      Hope that helps
