Oh come on, clearly, the simple solution is to make a very cheap ramjet out of... something, and do 2000 mph for under $2000. Or SCramjet, and do 10000 mph for under $10000. Note: long-range antenna and FPV system ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!
Peter Smythe Rocket plane would be a lot less hassle in technical ways. A ramjet needs specific speeds to operate, and a scramjet is just technically nonfeasable for a budget build. Like the Me163, a simple liquid fueled system could be the answer to do low budget speedflights... Safetywise, not the best ;)
I think the way you could do it would be to take it up to a couple of thousand metres with a quadcopter, which would be a nightmare to do because the air would get noticeably thinner at the altitudes you would want to go to, and then you would have to drop a rocket which you could fire. If you put wings at the very back of the bomb, it would be very nose heavy so steering it wouldn't be a problem. You would have to either put a parachute on it or use really cheap electronics, and you would also have to check with the government to see if it was even legal, because you would firing firing things straight down with no control over where they went, and you would probably have to get a no fly zone too
Killer video! Was impressed with the builds and the fact they HAD to make that second one just to show it's possible for under $80 instead of just leaving us hanging when the foam red barron failed. :p
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, please do more like it. I liked the idea another commenter posted about more competitions. Great job guys, I get excited when I see that yall have posted another video!
you guys kill me lol....love your videos !!! all the wit you guys have is really amusing and fun to watch.....keep up the good work guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+dequinox I love these dudes videos, so much enthusiasm, not so skinny Josh is a inspiring me a lot, soon i'll be dropping a few hundred dolllers on them for some of their kits and modular builds.
i think a really good challenge would be to build a quadcopter for under $100, but without counting the trasmitter and receiver in the price. you guys make great videos, by far the best rc channel on youtube. great work!
The whole time I was watching this I was hoping the plan would just tear apart in mid air it would have been hilarious. Keep his stuff up it's some cool
@joshuamelvin : OK thanks for clarifying that Josh. The reason I brought it up was because, on your advice, I ordered some of those same DS929MG servos from HobbyKing that you spoke of in that video...to be installed in my first plane that I hope to break the 100mph mark with. It's a little 50mm EDF-powered F-16 made by J-Power (which I also bought from HobbyKing), and I'm souping it up with a Wemo fan and 6000 Kv outrunner.
I came close by accident in 2003 I had a cheap Estes f4 corsair It had a 130 size motor and another 130 motor to make it turn the old system was heavy and could barely fly the airplane I installed a fireball 370 heli mmotor and a hobby grade radio it with a 300 ma 8.4 nmh pack from another cheap toy it was stupid fast we were guessing about 70 to 90 mph it was very hard to keep it in sight !!! I was just trying to upgrade it to flyable status people around us were shocked to see it was not nitro powered I did it just with stuff I had on hand at the time great vid !!!!
Actually guys, I'd love to see some detailed plans on the second plane... I wouldn't mind putting one of those together... maybe add a link to your website?
Hi. love The show. been into RC Cars for 10+ years, and just started to fly planes, love to build them and the mechanics of the planes. I made a 1 to 1 scale of the FT Speedwing, so people can make it more easier, the rar file is a Illustrator and a pdf. hope it helps people.
@crystal130h Yeah, I see what you mean. They kinda went back on their previous statement. But they were going for as cheap as possible, so I guess that's where they cut back.
With the second design sweep the wing even more from a 90° Sweep to a 45° sweep and add the most powerful motor you can get with the most bladed propeller you can get as well
hi ! wery cool episode ! liked your sort of "new" episode, kind of "original" from ordinary flitetest episodes :) I was wondering if you could share the buildings plans for the speed wing ? that would be nice ! Cheers !
you guy should make more episodes like this episode. and it would be a lot funnier if Chad and Josh B try and see who design the best plane. some ideas: slowest plane cheapest plane plane under $100 that can the most of weights.
I still love going back and watching this episode. An interesting datapoint: ecalc predicts a top speed of 83 mph at 61A for Josh's plane. ONE CHANGE will put it over 100 mph. Yup, a 4.5x4.5 APC will draw 41A at 119 mph.
How's it staying airborne in level flight? - From what i can see, the Wing has NO air-foil to generate lift.. So is it just being completely dragged around by the prop?
I would have thought a flying wing would have more surface drag. Apparently lightness also counts for a lot. So much to learn. Highest speed with greatest airtime would be a worthwhile challenge.
@crystal130h Hello friend. I can see where the advise I gave on the fox review seemed to be ignored. The Fox was a fast plane with large control serfaces with ample throw. The "challenge plane had very small controll serfaces with very little throws. This makes it ok to use the 9 grams. Excellent observation friend! JB
That looks like a 3DMON speedy. The speedy was a plane entered in a fastest foamy challenge on Rcgroups. Just google 3dmon speedy. There are plans, and i think he has "speed kits" available too on his website. I'm surprised the the josh's didnt give him props. I love your website and channel guys, keep up the good work!
Broke that speed with my first control line trainer. Thin solid balsa wing, basic profile fuselage, old glow engine. We clocked it at 110mph first flight out. Given that control lines experience roughly triple the parasitic drag of equivalent rc models, it shouldn't be too hard to manage that speed with basic 2 channel control and an old glow engine powering a small plane.
hey, i ordered a cloud flyer from HK and some electronics, figure i might as well get some build experiance and it was $80 total and comes with motor..
It feels like these videos never age sometimes it amasses me. I mean some of the style is old but the quality of the video and presentation just doesn’t like other TH-camrs.
Chad's 103mph Wing had WHAT.......?? *Swept Wings!!!* Something that the Germans figured out in *1940!!!!* 😋 Fun episode as always, with the old crew. 👍👍
What if the plane was a tube to house an EDF and electronics, and then built with wings like the Viggen? Canards take away a little bit of the length of the minimum necessary wingspan, why not?
Maybe time to revisit the 100mph for under $100. How much have we gone forward in the hobby in 6 years?
Asking the Real questions here.
Just went to write the same comment
petfrogg o
Sandro Henriques cannot find measurements for the Ft bloody Wonder
Consider big they already beat the 100mph mark for $100(actually less), I would think that they should try and lower it to fifty now or something.
still interesting to watch in 2019
well done Josh & Josh
2011!?! Dude!! You guys have been at it for a minute!!! Congrats! What a great hobby/job! You inspire me with every video I watch. Thanks guys!
Now 200mph for under $200. :P
***** agora mach 3 por 3000 reais.
Oh come on, clearly, the simple solution is to make a very cheap ramjet out of... something, and do 2000 mph for under $2000.
Or SCramjet, and do 10000 mph for under $10000.
Note: long-range antenna and FPV system ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!
you actually might be able to do 500 MPH for $500 or even less if you do most of the work yourself... search dynamic soaring
***** Rocket engines or OMS engines
If I could break the sound barrier for less than a grand I am game.
I think the way you could do it would be to take it up to a couple of thousand metres with a quadcopter, which would be a nightmare to do because the air would get noticeably thinner at the altitudes you would want to go to, and then you would have to drop a rocket which you could fire. Nathan JR buy a whip
Nathan JR let me just put this out there: no rc plane has gone over mach 1, much less for under $1000.
Home made jet engines and ductape my friend no just kidding but the radio would be exspensive because the humongous range you wil need
FishMB2015 Or a rifle.
@oimmuk - Ease of programming for expos. We needed precision control to fly it directly over the radar gun.
Just watched this again. I cannot believe that I have been enjoying Flite Test for over 10 years now... :)
I like how the 100 mph pass was precisely 100
That was 9 years ago? I feel like I watched this yesterday wow
note: i propably watched it in 2012,13 or 14 but thats still long agl
Awesome job guys, it's like I'm there experiencing the flight test.
Killer video! Was impressed with the builds and the fact they HAD to make that second one just to show it's possible for under $80 instead of just leaving us hanging when the foam red barron failed. :p
Either way, great job!! 80 mph is still amazing for such a small aircraft... Controlling that has got to be tricky!!!
Amazing how they get less views now with nearly 2 million subs. The old flite test was far superior
Love this stuff... your production values are quite good for a avg 500k views per vid channel!
+dequinox I love these dudes videos, so much enthusiasm, not so skinny Josh is a inspiring me a lot, soon i'll be dropping a few hundred dolllers on them for some of their kits and modular builds.
i think a really good challenge would be to build a quadcopter for under $100, but without counting the trasmitter and receiver in the price. you guys make great videos, by far the best rc channel on youtube. great work!
Love these type of episodes! Keep them coming :)
Could you make the most efficient setup kind of competition? That would be fun and a challenge! Great job and keep it up!
I've been looking for this type of channel for years!
Well you've came too late.
you can't have been looking very hard!
I feel like these two don’t like each other in real life, but force themselves to work with each other lol
I like josh, but josh is a bit annoying.
I feel you
+tony052803 why do i feel like this was simply a ploy to mess with josh. lol
Doctor what about josh?
Yeah Josh wasn't really nice
@Shadow Wolf 9010 r/whoosh
How tf is this video almost 10 years old and looks this good?
@rcFFBloodyMicks The FunBat is up next!
Great video Josh and Josh. Thanks for doing what you do.
I did this ages ago using the Hobbyking Flycat. Great work guys.
DAM! Bugle Boy! I have not seen that since the 90's!! back in middle school! LOL
Nice plane at 5:22 ;)
Great Vid, nicely done.
Jon
The whole time I was watching this I was hoping the plan would just tear apart in mid air it would have been hilarious. Keep his stuff up it's some cool
It is so weird seeing these older videos now.
"Thanks man. Coming from you, that means... something weird"
Watching this video as an adult for the first time since it was uploaded. I see why people used to ship you guys
that awfully looks like the speedy from RC groups, with a 4 cell though I have seen those go 120mph minimum. Like the video guys!!
So much for the challenge... You blew it with the spektrum radio.
@joshuamelvin : OK thanks for clarifying that Josh. The reason I brought it up was because, on your advice, I ordered some of those same DS929MG servos from HobbyKing that you spoke of in that video...to be installed in my first plane that I hope to break the 100mph mark with. The second one was awesome. Very easy to build. Thank you so nuch Flite Test! Regard!
Next I want to see 200mph for less than $200. in a foamie, now THATS a challenge!
Jon
this intro is my favorite

yeah
I came close by accident in 2003 I had a cheap Estes f4 corsair It had a 130 size motor and another 130 motor to make it turn the old system was heavy and could barely fly the airplane I installed a fireball 370 heli mmotor and a hobby grade radio it with a 300 ma 8.4 nmh pack from another cheap toy it was stupid fast we were guessing about 70 to 90 mph it was very hard to keep it in sight !!! I miss these Josh and Josh takes... they are good together.....
Hi. love The show. been into RC Cars for 10+ years, and just started to fly planes, love to build them and the mechanics of the planes.

great vid guys, thanks for this. def will try it self with a similar config
You guys should revisit this challenge today...and maybe even raise the bar
@crystal130h Yeah, I see what you mean. They kinda went back on their previous statement. But they were going for as cheap as possible, so I guess that's where they cut back.
Excellewnt episode, way to change it up, congrats on the 100 mph :-)
With the second design sweep the wing even more from a 90° Sweep to a 45° sweep and add the most powerful motor you can get with the most bladed propeller you can get as well
Just put C rocket on a paper airplane.
Trevor M Nah k rocket >===
No your all wrong a z rocket
*breaks the speed of sound and creates a black hole*
I think the goal is to get over 100 and still be controllable
Very nice challenge! Congrats on achieving your goal!
hi ! wery cool episode ! liked your sort of "new" episode, kind of "original" from ordinary flitetest episodes :)
I was wondering if you could share the buildings plans for the speed wing ?
that would be nice !

you guy should make more episodes like this episode.
and it would be a lot funnier if Chad and Josh B try and see who design the best plane.
some ideas:
slowest plane
cheapest plane
plane under $100 that can the most of weights.
MORE CHALLENGES!!! :D
+Alex Walsh the radio includes the receiver
I would say the grayson hobby micro jet v3, this is one awsome motor, Little more expensive but a good motor,
Do 25 under $25. That’s my budget
Mine too....
dude unless your homeless you're one cheap ass man
Keep saving!
Easy. Drop it from the top of a building
Haha lol
Cant wait to see the next episode. . .
I wish I was with you Iam from Irag my hobby is small flying and l am 52 years old thank you thank you for everything
I still love going back and watching this episode. An interesting datapoint: ecalc predicts a top speed of 83 mph at 61A for Josh's plane. ONE CHANGE will put it over 100 mph. Yup, a 4.5x4.5 APC will draw 41A at 119 mph.
That was fun to Watch thx
How's it staying airborne in level flight? - From what i can see, the Wing has NO air-foil to generate lift.. So is it just being completely dragged around by the prop?
Link to the plans for the plane.
look at the list below the vid and take the last link to the transmitter page, you see? it comes with the reciever
that radio is a great deal, been using it for months!
setup a D motor to ignite using a servo to light it once your at altitude. You only get 1 try though.
Can’t believe this video was made almost 10 years ago
Man I love these old vids
That is cool I just ordered a Falcon flying wing from BEVRC and maybe I can get that to go 100mph.
"What is that, H.H. Crew?" Friggen classic!😂
Sgt. Kong Henry Hudd crew..
Holy shit is that Jonny Knoxville's son?
I would have thought a flying wing would have more surface drag. Apparently lightness also counts for a lot. So much to learn. Highest speed with greatest airtime would be a worthwhile challenge.
Bugle Boy!?!?!? That was freaking hilarious.
Can you pls put the free build plans for the red color plane
that $20 radio is awesome, i have one. never let me down. even after submerging the RX in a salt pool.
have you ever tried the challenge again with a different plane that's under $100?
I also think you should try the inverted landing.
On the last 103mph pass it looked like it left a small vapour trail.
If you look closely it was already there.
@zyberbob
Thank you !
No plans up yet for your "Speed Wing" I was actually considering that build too.
@crystal130h Hello friend. I can see where the advise I gave on the fox review seemed to be ignored. The Fox was a fast plane with large control serfaces with ample throw. The "challenge plane had very small controll serfaces with very little throws. This makes it ok to use the 9 grams.

I got a FliteTest ad before this!!

They have by far the best intro and you know how hard they must have worked on that?
That looks like a 3DMON speedy. The speedy was a plane entered in a fastest foamy challenge on Rcgroups. Just google 3dmon speedy. There are plans, and i think he has "speed kits" available too on his website. I'm surprised the the josh's didnt give him props. I love your website and channel guys, keep up the good work!
Depends on what motor are you using, what sort of trainer is that.....
Where are the desighns of the plane shape and how you cut the foamboard?
Broke that speed with my first control line trainer. Thin solid balsa wing, basic profile fuselage, old glow engine. We clocked it at 110mph first flight out. Given that control lines experience roughly triple the parasitic drag of equivalent rc models, it shouldn't be too hard to manage that speed with basic 2 channel control and an old glow engine powering a small plane.
This must be completely INSANE:
Make a 200 MPH (About 322 KPH) for under $200 plane (if such a budget is possible!) if this idea isn't too insane.
Yeah... what I said earlier was... impractical.
Its cool man, we all had the same reaction haha
A real car that goes 250 mph has like 1,100 hp and carries 2 people.
A real plane that goes 300 mph has like 300 hp and carries 2 people.
Ducted EDF to go fast but they are much more expensive
Yeah!great idea, wait,I just remembered that 200 mph is *FAST*
hey, i ordered a cloud flyer from HK and some electronics, figure i might as well get some build experiance and it was $80 total and comes with motor..
@00:36 those shades on the dude to the left LOL
It feels like these videos never age sometimes it amasses me. I mean some of the style is old but the quality of the video and presentation just doesn’t like other TH-camrs.
Try it with rubber power. Plausible I reckon (but not for a long duration).
Chad's 103mph Wing had WHAT.......??
*Swept Wings!!!* Something that the Germans figured out in *1940!!!!* 😋
Fun episode as always, with the old crew. 👍👍
Even though Josh's plane lost, you still have to give *props* to his plane
looks like HobbyKing have raised the price for pretty much all the parts listed here
Mrcodenamejag probs just because of this vid
What if the plane was a tube to house an EDF and electronics, and then built with wings like the Viggen? Canards take away a little bit of the length of the minimum necessary wingspan, why not?
I think you need to see what plane you can fly the slowest, but then also replace parts ffor a few bucks, then see how fast it can fly
is there a build on the 2nd plane. i would love to build one.
Any plans for these?
lol josh scott's got a funny run! bet that affected his timing too :D
Can you do a build video on the one that mad 103mph?
could you show a fpv system, just camera transmitter camera and monitor?
36,000th viewer, flitetest has gone a long way to further the hobby
