    I, for one, love that they keep adding the VGA port. It's awesome for troubleshooting. When something goes bad, analog is better than digital for testing.

    • @MarkRose1337
      @MarkRose1337 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +smokingflowers I doubt it will work with all CPUs though. Skylake doesn't support VGA: it's not listed on the intel ARK for the i7-6700K at least.

      MasterControl90 Probably with a digital to analog chip on the motherboard somewhere. That must be what they've done.

      +smokingflowers DVI can carry pins for the analog signal too. I don't understand why motherboard and monitor manufacturers keep adding VGA ports, just include a cheap DVI to VGA adapter like all the GPU manufacturers if the product itself hasn't got a dedicated VGA port.

    I was using an old Athlon X2 250 processor. Half a month ago, I got this board and put an i7 6700K and I can say I am really satisfied. I was really surprised to see what this board offers for it's price point and your recognition of the value of athis board now reassures me I didn't make a mistake when I got it.

    I still use VGA because my FW900 is still going strong. No latency, easily upto 2880x1800@75hz down to 1280x800@200hz and everywhere in between. Great colour reproduction and contrast, everything you'd expect from a workstation monitor.

    I still use vga. I guess you can't expect much from a $25 monitor.

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Marcel Robitaille Yeah I use VGA on my 3rd monitor which is really a salvaged TV my neighbor was going to throw out because the HDMI port died on her, and a lot of business, Non profits, and governments still use VGA as they invested a lot in those cheap monitors years ago, and they either don't have the money to upgrade them, or see no reason to upgrade them because they still work. So yeah I think VGA is still gonna be around for a while longer even as much as people like Windle here don't see a use for it.

    • @MarcelRobitaille
      @MarcelRobitaille 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Commodorefan64 I'd rather have the port than not have it even if it's not as sexy as hdmi or displayport

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marcel Robitaille Same, and I should also add having a VGA port on a monitor, and motherboard when trouble shooting older hardware that sometimes won't show a display on the DVI, or HDMI port is a god send, as I had that issue a while back when building a computer with spare parts for my sister's kids where the Nvidia GPU would not show a display on the DVI port when booting into Linuxmint after the install, but did show a display on the VGA port, and no a DVI to VGA adapter did not work, so having the analog VGA allowed me to boot into LinuxMint, and get the correct drivers installed for the Display.

    As an owner, It does get the OC done - I've yet to try 4.8 but it's stable @4.7Ghz with around 1.375v, the only gripe I have with this board is the lack of more USB connectors in the back - but thanks to my fine case I got 4 USB connectors up front - so it sort of balances it all out.
    Damn I want to go 4.8 or maybe more - just need some spare time!

    Not sure why I can't just respond to you but, as far as upgrading it all depends on what you hope to get out of your build, are you planning to do any kind of content creation; is it intended just for gaming, or just an all around multi use work station and some gaming.
    If the last two are your answer I would say stick to what you have, unless there is some feature set that you can't live without that is on the newer chipsets, in which case go skylake.
    If your plans are to do content creation then I would recommend going for the X99 chipset, though depending on your budget I would stick to the 5930K.

    Really good board for it's price. I usually only buy enthusiast-grade Hardware but I really don't see a reason to drop ~300€ on the Deluxe other than it looking fancier and having bunch of other exotic features.
    The A does all the stuff I need. It overclocks my 6700K, has more then enough ports for my mostly gaming needs and still looks fancy. Especially in my white H440.

    I love having at least one pci slot and vga. I mean...I have an intel pci gigabit nic and a vga monitor that I love to use for my servers (on a kvm switch) so it's great. I would've liked a second onboard lan port though...otherwise great motherboard for the price her the z 170-a costs 190euros and the z170 deluxe costs 370...that's a huge difference if you ask me...

    What sub $150 z170 motherboard can reliably/easily boot from a M.2 raid without crippling the board? Dual M.2 sockets preferred, but a added pcie adapter is an option.
    I'm not a gamer, but would like the most USB 3/3.1 options.
    Very confused at so many z170 boards.

    VGA is outdated but an old-skool PCI slot isn't?! O.o

    • @anthonyschroeder521
      @anthonyschroeder521 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Brent Frey The difference is dual link DVI is directly compatible with VGA, so there isn't any need to include on anyways. PCI is outdated (he calls it legacy), but that standard has no compatibility with pcie (plus as rare as they are there are some unique old hardware for pci who's functionality has never been replaced.).

    • @anthonyschroeder521
      @anthonyschroeder521 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Furuichi Tatsuyuki look up dvi to vga adapters. they are passive (aka directly compatible) and indeed come with most new graphics cards already.

    • @CelmorSmith
      @CelmorSmith 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Furuichi Tatsuyuki They have pins for the analog signal and digital signal, you just gotta look at the pin layout if the plug supports it (those fore pins around the cross shaped pins are for analog afaik).

      I have the 3570k which is great cpu, but I think its failing at least according to the mini dumps. Its a tough decision because I know the performance increase isn't that good and certainly not worth $490. Wondering if I should though it out and save up a little for the i7 6700k instead.

      $100 exactly. but if I overclock the 6600k to 4ghz..the performance is practically the same. The only benefit of the 6700k is the 4 more extra threads and a large cache which might be nice for my photo/video processing. But how much faster? I can't see it being that much but with the larger cache perhaps less chance of bottlenecking. I don't know play games much, so I don't know.

    • @whydohandlesexistAAA
      @whydohandlesexistAAA 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nonikita It works but it isn't worth damaging your hardware IMO. Skylake technically supports normal ddr3 too as the signaling it uses is the same as ddr3l but the memory controller of skylake cpus weren't designed to control 1.5V or 1.65V ram. I would get a board that supports ddr4 kr ddr3l. I don't think that it is worth risking your hardware by using normal ddr3.

    I like having that vga port, just like people might have legacy pci cards they could have perfectly functional crt monitors. I still have an lg studioworks 995e and that thing is still a beast all things considered. 1600x1200@75hz with crt colour reproduction is nothing to scoff at. And yet that monitor only works with vga. Why should they stop including those ports?

    • @Starchface
      @Starchface 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sauron It's very interesting that PCI and VGA are included at a cost, yet there are no heatpipes or twelve-billion-phase power, and the USB ports are as sparse as my hair.
      Asus tends to put out these oddball boards and one gets the feeling they are not intended for the enthusiast, but rather for workstations or some kind of industrial environment with legacy equipment.

    • @sauron1427
      @sauron1427 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are intented to suit as many people as possible. The purely enthusiast boards would be the sabertooth and rog lineup, This one on the other hand has features for the enthusiasts, but also tries to meet the needs of someone who works on his machine as well - which doesn't mean that person isn't an enthusiast. Wendell is a great example, although he has no use for these ports.

    • @CelmorSmith
      @CelmorSmith 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sauron DVI has pins to carry analog signal and can be passively adapted to VGA connectors. I don't see any reason why motherboard and monitor manufacturers should put VGA ports on their products yet most of them still have these ports.

    • @Starchface
      @Starchface 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      CelmorSmith Indeed. If the motherboard (or video card) has DVI-I, with the "cross" and 4 pins, the VGA port can be omitted with no loss. Optionally an adapter can be included in the box, probably for similar or less cost than implementing a VGA connector on the board.
      I can only guess that there are millions of unused VGA connectors sitting around in warehouses, perhaps as part of preconfigured "blocks" with other connectors. This board also has DVI-D, HDMI and DP connectors so they have covered every option using dedicated ports. One benefit of this configuration is that the VGA and DVI ports can be used concurrently.
      I stand by what I said earlier: this board is not so much aimed at consumer enthusiasts with 3 DP monitors and latest-and-greatest everything, but at some kind of industrial or work setting. There you may find all manner of legacy equipment still in productive use, and may need this odd mix of older connectors, interfaces and ports- _not_ fancy heatpipes and shiny bling which do nothing to impress the accountants.

    Is this a great build I have purchased all these parts already and currently waiting for the RX 480 graphics card to release to buy that. Also will this setup support two RX 480 cards? And a SSD and HDD drive at the same time? Also any suggestions on which case I should get to make sure this runs smoothly? Please help.

      Looks good all but one thing, power supply. I'd recommend a 750w if you're wanting to run RX 480 CF.

      I'm not sure they need an i7, if they're not recording, editing, or rendering, it'd be pointless. Also, if they can buy the 1070 over the 2 RX 480s, they should probably consider. I just assume most people who will run CF will pick one card up and the other later.

      try to avoid MSI motherboards, i don't want to hate but a lot of people complains about random crashes and stuff. Asus motherboards are the best, gigabyte are also very good.

    So with the DisplayPort supporting 4k 60hz, can I run 1080p 120 or 144hz? The Integrated Graphics are enough for CS:GO from what I've heard and that's my main game I want to run on integrated graphics for a barebones build (no gpu) and I'm hoping to get 120 or 144hz on my Asus VG248QE. Can I do that with this board? And if not, any board that can?
