My dishwasher wouldn't turn on and water had stopped draining so like a kid ,i took everything out without looking at it and pulled off the floating cap . But already odered a replacement and this video shows how to install it
Thank you so very much for this video. I had soapy water on the floor in front of my Maytag . I took the my float top off. It didnt look dirty. It did have a film on it. I cleaned it off, put it back on. I ran a load without dishes. There wasn't a leak. 10-24-2023. May God bless you.
Exactly the fix I needed, with a few smiles along the way-love your Flashlight! You cut to the chase, much appreciated, good camera work and clear explanation.
Thanks for the video. Helped me diagnose the occasional leak under the front right corner of our dishwasher. I pulled it all apart (completely removed the housing from underneath), cleaned everything well with CLR to break up the deposits, and then reinstalled everything. I also pulled out the door seal, soaked it for awhile, cleaned off the deposit that was building up, and then reinstalled. All in all a great video to help understand how the system works. Thanks again.
2nd time i had this issue in a year. They never (honestly) explained the issue before when it was last fixed. Thanks to your video, i no longer will be paying for people to come out and wipe out soap scum! Appreciate it!!!
To remove lime and scale from hard water, use white vinegar , maybe a cup, every week or two in wash cycle without soap. Dissolves the residue and is not toxic.
MAN I WOULD HAVE PRIED UP ON THAT DAMN FLOAT AND BROKEN IT TOO. EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED TO KNOW. GREAT VIDEO. I OFTEN FEEL LIKE HOMER SIMPSON AT TIMES LIKE THIS. DOOE
Thanks, had the very same problem. Didn't know how to get the float out, didn't want to break it. Your video was perfect, fixed in minutes, able to get float out and clean some waste that had accumulated under it. NO leaks !
bro thanks so much. I knew this valve was leaking, but assumed there was some kind of seal in it. Had no idea it was just an open tube like that. I cleaned it all up (was full of crud and scale) and we'll see if it works tomorrow. I have a maytag, but it uses the exact same solenoid/float/linkage
Thank you Josh. Tried cleaning first before disassembling the float switch. It was also the most logical explanation as the underside of the seat was dry and water only dripped from the white plastic. This is certainly a design flaw. You’d think there was a way of sealing the float without the chance for overflowing water!
@ 2:58 perfect..! This is where my KitchenAid was dripping from tonight after a puddle on the floor.. easy enough fix once I found your video... Thanks..!!
The sound effects are awesome very creative and I think you missed an opportunity to use "Kaboom it" from parks and Recreation . Thank you for doing this video very helpful
My old Whirlpool dishwasher has a metal orifice hole (much like our shower heads) at the electro magnet valve which is used as a meter for the water flow fill rate before either the timer or float shuts off the magnet. Also clean the inlet screen at the magnet valve. I had to use a slightly larger drill bit to drill out the hole which was too small to let enough water in and so caused motor pump cavitation sounds and poor cleaning, which manually adding more water fixed. I also had to bend/adjust the float shut off level switch to allow shut off at just the right water level to keep from cavitation but not use too much water. Take care
Thanks man....my problem was that was that the darn nut that tightens the switch in place through the wall of the tank, loosened off and water was leaking out there. I could not figure out how to take the inner float off, until I found your video. Thanks...tightened it up and put a little dab of silicon on the nut to stop it from loosening itself off again. Thanks again
After replacing the door gasket (more $), I decided to cut my losses and spring for a new unit. Kenmore’s float design seems to be Whirlpool’s standard and is problematic for the reasons you point out. I’ve owned and installed many dishwashers over the years and I never ran into this problem before. Hopefully, not all brands are made by Whirlpool; maybe the float systems in other brands have a better design.
Thanks for the detailed, clear instructions (and the great sound effects)! Great to find these problems I can fix myself. Given the likelihood of this problem it would be great if this dishwasher was designed so it didn't require taking off the kick panel and working in crazy tight spaces! I find that lemon juice works better than white vinegar for hardwater stains.
Well Done! My Maytag MDB8969SMD0 was leaking and I couldn't discover the problem for sure until I viewed your DYI. It seems that there was a significant build-up of SLIME up in the inside of the float cap itself. I assume it was just too heavy to float reliably. I cleaned it, reassembled, and listed for the switch click and I'm hoping that was the issue; if not, and if I do discover where else the problem lies, I will post what I learn. Whatever the case, thank you for your video; the repair parts sellers don't provide this info.
Check this float valve first if you aren’t getting any water in from water inlet valve. I thought my inlet valve was bad but it was my float was a little stuck and didn’t sit all the way down.
Thanks for the video. I think mine is sticking in the up position, msking it run with no water in it. Question: Have you installed a water softener yet? It looks to me that would solve a lot of problems for you.
I wish I had seen this video before I attempted to clean that float. I assumed it snapped in and out, so I just pulled it up, but I snapped off the little knob on the end.
Cleaning the float is only half the job. You should also remove the float housing by taking off the nut and clean the area under it. Also clean the threads of the housing, the nut and rubber washer. Replace the the rubber washer if it’s damaged.
Welllll sh!t, you may have just saved me from buying the gasket and nut thinking one was bad... However, our flooring has had water flowing under it for at least a month 👌 I thought water was spilled and left buckling the laminate, then it got worse the next week..🤦🏼♀️ Thankfully the previous owners left linoleum under the laminate they out down..so that has hopefully saved our sub floor!
Hi. My dishwasher is not washing. It fills up. But is not spraying water. Ran the diagnostic test. It givesme a 6-4 code. So I replaced the Inlet Valve. I can hear the float switch clicking. What else can it be?
This is beyond my skill level. There are a lot of things it could be and its hard to tell without looking at your dishwasher in person. One thing I have found is that any part that carries or sprays water can get really gunked up.
Thank you! What I’m Wondering unless I completely missed it was how did you get the float out in the first place? Was it just a good yank? I don’t want to potentially make this worse. Lol.
Yeah I guess I started the video with it already out, didn't I? If you see at 3:23 where I mention where the "stem" comes down, there's a little lip that it pops past. When you're taking it out, if you use the tip of your screwdriver to pry it toward you and then push it up and out - that will get it past the lip. Yeah, don't yank or it might break the nub or the lip. (How about those technical terms?)
I seem to have to do this maintenance once a month. We rinse dishes before loading and we use a quality soap. Between the build up under the float and the sludge in the filter its really Griffin annoying.
@@rawar777joshanderson we’ve been using the Cascade Complete pellets from Costco. Someone told me the plastic wrapper just melts but never really disintegrates leading to gunk build up on the filter and float. We’re going to go back to the big bottle of gel and see what happens.
