This was one of the few games I watched live during the tournament, I was trying not to watch too much (to not spoil myself) but it was Maru vs ByuN soo.... Will be covering the rest of the highlights (and the playoffs/finals) in the coming weeks
Man that was a wild first game. So much pressure all over the place, every push is balanced on a knife edge running into a siege line just instakills you.
First game really showed that ByuN strongest ability is not his macro, game sense, intuition or even micro, it is his absolutely uncanny ability to squeeze water from any stone in almost desperate situations, just creating opportunities from thin air
The Most Terran vs The Best Terran, just as God intended. Zerg and Protoss? Zerg is that weird kid your mom makes you invite to the party. And Protoss? Well, they bring good food. But there’s only one faction you can scream out and not look insane.
Unfortunately his TvT is nowhere near as good as his TvZ and TvP. I knew he was going to lose when I saw his first bracket was ALL Terrans. A damn shame, cause I really think he could’ve made it to the end, but I’m actually surprised how hard he made Maru fight that first game!
@@hairychris444 that he did. But I had not seen the games before I posted this, only saw that Oliveira had won WC. I'm pretty sure no one saw that coming. I'm so happy for him.
Hell ya. Been waiting on Maru vs Byun. Been watching Byun beat everyone up and you start thinking can anyone stop him? Then Maru plays a game and your like o ya Maru exists.
I mean.... Spoiler warnings ! Not only did serral crush byun in the round of 16 3-0, so he did get stopped. As for Maru, well, he seemed invincible for the whole tournament until oliveira pounded him in the final. Not bad luck either. Oliveira just played a better terran than maru.
@@popkhorne5372 Dude, Time played incredibly well. His last three games being Reynor, Hero and Maru. Once he hit his stride he just rolled Hero and Maru. I was astounded by how well he played. Granted Terran is usually a very technical game, but Time made it look like a knife fight in a phone booth.
If Byun hadn't given up on his tech and economy halfway he could have probably pulled through, at some point he went down to 30 SCVs and then never built another one despite plenty of opportunity to rebuild.
@@archwaldo Maru was fighting Time 1v1. Imagine if Maru came across a Terran player that could match him. That how the finals felt like. If Time can replay at that level of skill, we might have two god like terrans from now on, not just one.
Winter you are my fav caster!! Keep the good stuff coming. When can we expect you to cast one of the live events like pig? He’s good but you jokes and punch line are what I’m here for😂also shout out to jimmy he’s been killing it lately
It's TIME to make Oliveira his card Winter. Translation of his Chinese while he cried: " I have waited for so long, last year was so hard. I though SC2 was over for me. But I told myself, I'll practice more. If I become a champion, I'll show you."
I kinda wonder why widow mines didn't get more use. I would think they could be even better than turrets for early anti drop protection, and against those big clusters of half health marines even a single widow shot could do massive damage.
Could you redo a video on how to set controls for your terran units? Normally for me I just bunch all of them up and just tab but i think its messy. As a noob would be good to relearn how to do it properly
Maru's strategic skillset is so well tuned for TvT it's not even fair. Byun had a decent eco lead for a good chunk of game 1 but Maru's tank control and positioning were just too strong, and you can't dislodge them with marine micro alone!
It's unfortunate that projectile attacks aren't able to be dodged, as opposed to hitscan or melee. It would make micro even more insane than it already is.
normally TvT bores me but this was a banger! also i feel like Maru woudlve closed the game out a long time ago if he had gotten liberator range, yes 300 300 woudlve been an expensive upgrade but it woudlve allowed him to basically get free siege tank kills or force Byun to dive his liberators.
Yessssir time to decide who's the better TvT player I'm excited for this one Thanks Winter was waiting for your commentary for any tournament matches lol
I am shit at playing starcraft, but love the difficulty of the game and the level of skill of the players haha, my mrs and mates tease me for being a fan lol. I know how difficult this game is to be this goood hahah
This game was the best tvt in Katowice watching Byun desperately circulating around maru trying to find a weakness in Maru for 30 minutes but just couldn't Until Time came and just punch Maru in the face It's rather weird byun having double starport since early game but never tries to remake more vikings once he lost air control. Like, he kept tossing away medivac and marines just to slowly die to liberators instead of trying to remake his viking fleet Byun definitely needs to rethink how he plays after losing to classic, serral and maru, he spent too much time trying to make the multi-pronged marine drop works instead of just make the correct units and attack in the correct time Now come think about it, this game looks amazing for clickbait yes many marines died and tanks go boom boom but the whole game is just like two cats nudging on each other until the whole map mines out
I'd love to see an in-depth analysis of Oliveira, but SC2 is a game of limited information and players are making judgement calls all the time. I think in the mid-game Byun decided he's a bit behind and over time he'd spiral into defecit if he kept trying to match Maru's army comp, because Maru's playing faster besides having a strategic advantage. So Byun tried to play a more aggressive style and gamble on doom drops or hitting soft spots by circumventing Maru's air presence. I think Byun gambled he'd be able to create something close to a perfect storm and Maru's macro would start crumbling like a house of cards, but it turned out to be a stone wall. Maru was able to keep up with controlling air+ground armies and trade much better, make additional orbitals and balance his economy better all the way until the last moments of game 1. I think Byun's strategy of relying so much on manouvering his army didn't play well into taking the few furthermost bases on his side of the map, because he needed some space between him and Maru in order to manouver and his way of defending was "punch first and harder on the opposite side of where you're about to get hit".
game 1 just highlights how little splash damage terran has. i'm sure either of them would've given all the minerals for a single templar to wipe out those giant clumps of marines.
@@ObeliskM i mean, Oliveira did not have a stroke of luck. He beat most of the top 5 best players in starcraft 2 in a row, in a single day. Maru was dominant the whole day of the final stage until Oliveira just outplayed him and did not give him a chance to go for a reverse sweep. Maru is great at TvT, and he got smacked. Does not mean Oli is overall the better player by any means, but Maru was playing well, and lost.

Lets Slice 'em up!
Thank you! I prefer your casting compared to the live announcers tbh
Here's to hoping you cast HerO vs Dark.
Byun vs Maru or Byun vs Serral, that is the question
maru vs classic reportedly verges on BLH territory courtesy of classic's straight past spicy to unorthodox strategies
These two did more in the first 7 minutes of a game than I do in a week
Man that was a wild first game. So much pressure all over the place, every push is balanced on a knife edge running into a siege line just instakills you.
I wanna see a 2v2 of Maru and Byun vs Serral and Raynor. I would in fact pay for that with real money lol
Surprise Casting, and its another Byun. I love it. Thank you for keeping these up Winter.

Please do a video on the grand finals between Oliveira vs Maru. That was a BANGER of a series.
Anyone else here counting watched Winterstarcraft Videos in Hundreds?
That is rookie numbers.
At least a million, at least.
1 billion
At least as many as marines dead in this match
Yeah I'm well in the thousands
I haven't watched yet, but if I was a betting man I would bet on Byun!
Edit: This is why I don't gamble

Woooooooooooooow. Hard to watch all those ByuN games and him being so dominant, to then see a clean sweep game first round knockout.

How many Game of the years you want... Winter: yes
Wow! What a first game!!! Maybe one of the very best games of StarCraft 2 ever played up to date.
I really felt the weight of the first game. This was a beautiful series
Hadn’t seen this one yet, glad you casted it!
Such an amazing first match! Thanks for the vid
4:21 - I've never seen both players as red before, what did Winter do to make it happen there? (I assume some observer-hotkey-thing)

The Viking dueling in the first game!
Byun and losing to Maru, name a more iconic duo

Also the mootas kills me everytime
always enjoy your commentary. Your love of the game comes through and your funny.
Better games than in the finals
