I know how hard the title clickbaits but this is legitimately the highest level series I have ever seen in 12+ years of StarCraft 2. Neither player makes major mistakes, it is a chess game and a boxing match at 500APM from start to finish. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did .
Man, when I was 21 I thought "that's it, it's too late to get good at the game now", meanwhile Byun over here at almost 30 destroying everyone. I might just pick the game up again.
Byun is like the Dark of Terran; world champions both, and though neither are seen at the best of their race, they are consistent, long-time contenders who give the best in the world a run for their money, more often than not. Both have a tendency not to conform to strict meta-builds, and are more likely to improvise, and rely on tactics rather than strategy. It costs them games, even ones they might otherwise win, but they provide great entertainment for their viewers, and earn dedicated fans.
Byun playing like a god in this series holy crap. I used to be this impressed by Serral when I first started watching him but he was on the back foot for so much of this. Incredible players, both of them.
That 5th game, wow. I called it for Serral when he was about 180 supply, creeping the whole map, and shut down all the drops. Few minutes later and Byan just took him apart. Great game.
It’s really interesting to me that even as Zerg is notorious for it’s aggression and early game zergling rushes, at these high levels, Terran and Protoss are usually MUCH more aggressive. In a way, this is lore-friendly, since new hatcheries are pretty vulnerable to getting wiped out, but esablished hive-clusters are nigh-unassailable. Again, from a lore perspective, the idea of a single SCV or a few marines just walking around a hatchery watching the drones work and seeing what buildings are being built is pretty interesting. Like, the only reason they can do so unmolested is because of how new the hatchery is, and because they aren’t doing anything to provoke the Zerg into making Zerglings or calling for a Queen. Most Zerg are essentially wildlife, after all, and there are examples of people getting quite close to them and being ignored.

That was proven in the Baneling short story and in the HotS evolution missions. So, harassing a hatchery and failing to wipe it out (aka not doing enough damage with your drops or early pushes) is how you end up getting swarmed by a highly aggressive swarm of Zerg (aka, lose to a late-game Zerg composition)
This might be the vest post reaper nerf Byun I've ever seen. When he starts employing more tactics to match his micro he truly makes it into the ranks of the Maru and Serral. I wish he'd do this more.
Great content Winter. You are honestly one of the best RTS commentators of any kind both in your ability to read and explain the game as it unfolds and in pure entertainment. I'd love if you could bring your brand of commentary to AOE2 which is my other favourite RTS and I think different but as good as SC2. Regardless, keep up the great work and keeping this scene alive.
The newest patch may finally add uThermal to Byun's vaunted position of getting a unit nerfed. It's possible his mass Ravens strat caused that change. :D
I still think its crazy everybody who plays Byun or Maru as zerg doesn't throw 2-3 spores at edges of every cliff base. I feel like there is no way it wouldn't be worth it. Either Serral was off or he just couldn't keep up with Byun this series. Game one was fairly close but I think he would have won even harder with the new patch. Game two started with a nice spicy proxy., and winter said its probably the highest level game he has ever seen. Byun playing game 2 and 3 like hes the fuckin A.I and can individually micro in 3-4 different places at once. Maru, Serral, Byun in a 1v1v1 free for all? Throw Dark in there just to make it a cluster fuck.
@@Axairu I mean he played pool before ovy or seccond every game right? And never dou ke expanded, stayed standard one base up which is required because your hatch is also your production, that's why they are a little cheaper.
Yes, Serral prioritizing spreading creep to the edge of his base is obvious. Unfortunately us mere mortals find it hard to spare the apm for that in the early game.
I really liked in game 4 the securing of the drop zones with the liberators.. Would have been awesome to open the way with secure drop zones to the main in game 3.
It sounds like fighting Byun the way Serral does in this video is like trying to get out of a rear-naked choke hold while having your hands tied behind your back. That non-stop pressure is suffocating to watch! Can't imagine how it is to play against.
I can't believe Byun let Serral recover in that 2nd game. Good on Serral though. A bazillion less Widow Mine hits and he would have had it! 1:09:25: WOW, I don't think I've ever seen an income graph like that in a pro game =0
Having played this game only up until diamond league and knowing how fcking hard it is, watching these dudes play is absolutely bonkers. Have no idea how they can be in so many different places at once and micro each of them so well at the same time!
Your comments about Byun vs Maru around 44:00 ring true, imo. The best RTS players don’t necessarily have better micro than everyone else, in fact, they are often on par with or slightly below some of their peers. The very best RTS players are consistent above all else. They can always execute through an entire series without tripping or choking. TheViper of AOE2 demonstrated this very well during a tournament I watched a few years ago where his younger opponent was equally skilled, but would trip up at crucial moments and lose a game. The biggest moment being game 7 of a best of 7 when he had his worst performance in the entire series whereas TheViper continued to play just as well as he had for the last 6 games.

Game 2 is so drastic that I needed to pause the video to catch a breath. That last game looks a bit boring at first half but sped up like a rollercoaster going downhills suddenly
ill never understand why terrans using mass bio wont just get like a single raven to counter sneaky infestors like at 35:10 it auto detects for you, plus you now have the anti armor missile, which would still get you some value. idk, maybe they know something i dont, im horrible at starcraft it just seems like a smart idea to me.
Using a raven requires a separate control group and it's quite the hassle to micro with it alongside bio compared to ghost Besides, scans are free and are easier to use and you don't wanna oversaturate with mules anyway, plus tvz is its worst matchup
@@ElkaPME but the Raven makes it so you don't have to use scans as often, and even if they don't even use the Raven's abilities and just have it floating around with the army it's probably still worth not losing their army because of a single infestor
@@aarongiroux5416 There are also more downsides to using ravens in comparison to ghosts in tvz (and also tvp) If you think about it, yes, ravens have auto turrets, interference matrix, and dorito dust, but they're less potent than what abilities ghost has in general. Look at it this way, interference matrix only affects mechanical and psionic units, except they aren't that much units to target, especially in tvz where an entire race is purely biological and all it can target are queens, vipers, and infestors. Dorito dusting, while really good at allowing you to shred, is pretty slow and better players know how to bait it away from the main army easily. Ghost on the other hand, has infinitely better abilities in comparison. EMP not only is invaluable against other spellcasters, it's also _the_ protoss kryptonite while snipe is absurdly powerful in tvz and doesn't slouch in tvz either. The only matchup the raven beats the ghost is tvt where most of the most powerful terran units are mechanical and ghosts don't have a lot to go for there are too many bio to deal with and tvt tends to be mech leaning.

I think the only mistake was game 3 were serral lost those queens to the marines he couldn’t expand his creep or keep up on injects
