Vibrato - Technique Lesson

  • FiddleHed is the fun way to learn fiddling online!
    Here is an introduction to vibrato on the violin.
    We will start by holding the fiddle in guitar position and just working on the motion without bowing. It's best to start with the middle finger. Release the left hand so it's not touching the neck. This will give you more freedom of motion.
    Once you have this motion, switch to violin position, and try the motion there. Then try it with the bow.
    You can also try a sliding motion which might help you get the feel.
    Start with a slow vibrato.
    As usual, start simple. Just practice vibrato on one note for a long time. Practice in short spurts, like for a minute. Do something else, like a new tune, then practice vibrato again. That kind of practice works for me, but perhaps you have a different style that works for you.
    I made some “Learning Chunks” on the FiddleHed site to help you do this. These focused exercises contain sheet music, tabs and mp3 snippets to guide you on each step of your fiddle journey.
    These and all new lesson pages can be viewed for one week after publication with a FREE trial membership. Check it out here: fiddlehed.com
    And after you sign up, I’ll also send you a mini-course of lessons specially designed for your skill level.
    Alrighty. Play every day, have fun 😀 and thanks for making music 🙏
    Now, go fiddle with it...

    Thank you so much for your videos. Several people were very good teachers but I think your system is the best. I can't wait to take lessons with you or a group however you do it. 😊
    I just hope that I can learn it well enough to play a little for my own enjoyment or when the musical people get together here at Lake Chaweva.
    Our power has been out so I haven't been able to look at all of your videos yet but I'm going to see if you explain the notes chords and how one string can turn into different sounds. I apologize, I wasn't in the band so I'm not sure how to explain what I am looking for, it reminded me of writing chess moves, i.e. Qa6-a3. ❤ from West Virginia

    I have just discovered your channel only a day ago, and I am going to be coming back for a long time. There is so much great teaching and demonstration content here. During vibrato on your other videos, it almost seems like your fingers are going up and down with the pad of your fingers. Is this an illusion, or am I seeing this exactly the way it is? I sometimes do this with my index finger because I can't wiggle it very well. Is this an acceptable technique? Thank you for your very smooth teaching style!

      You rock your hand forward and back, your finger is the pivot but it’s rolling a bit...

    Oh hey, I’ve got the little squeeze with the left hand on the violin as well. My teacher is trying me to get rid of it, but I seem to cannot let go of it. Seeing you know gives me hope, that it’s possible to be any good with the violin even with that little squeeze?!

    Apparently I taught myself the wrong way, moving finger side to side. It sounds great for middle finger but not the others. Is it common to move into the side to side movement when you are wanting to increase speed from the wrist vibrato, or is it best to stick with wrist? Thank you, great teaching videos!

    Could you please please do a tutorial for any Brother's Comatose or Devil Makes Three song? I've been trying to figure out the notes and it's been difficult, they're such fun songs maybe you can give it a try and share your awesomeness.

    I have issues "releasing" the index side of my hand when I get to the lower strings I have to bring my elbow in further to reach them and then almost my whole arm starts to hurt along with my thumb. I also have to put my thumb under the neck to support it.

    • @fiddl3hed
      @fiddl3hed  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you support the fiddle with your chin and shoulder? If not try a shoulder rest. Then you won’t have to use the thumb for support.

    what recording equipment do you use? I would like to hear how I sound and dont think my tablet is too good.

      First, just try recording with a smartphone or a computer. Might be enough if you’re just looking for feedback.
      I use audio tecnica condenser mic, Reason software and a mac.

    how do you avoid bouncy bow when doing vibrato? I can see your violin is wiggling but your bow is not affected & not bouncing.

    • @fiddl3hed
      @fiddl3hed  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alysa, use your shoulder to stabilize the fiddle. Use your wrist to create the vibrato, not the arm.

    I’ve been playin guitar for 30 years and my vibrato is still crappy. I hope I don’t have the same issue with the violin
