  • On our second watch, we both felt that The Favourite has excellent characters, performances, cinematography, direction... pretty much everything. It works great as a thought provoking drama and as a comedy, subverting the conventions of the erotic costume genre.

I was the same as you guys on first viewing, I would have given it an 8/10, and that's probably how most people view it too because the ending just kind of ends.. but after you watch it a second time, you totally get it, and it's endlessly rewatchable. instant 10/10 and my favourite of the year, by far... the craziest part about this movie is that if you actually look at the real life story of Queen Anne, Lady Sarah, and Abigail, most of this movie is true. it actually happened. of course they take some liberties on the costumes being more modern, the dialogue of what actually was said, but the whole power play and even a possible relationship between Queen Anne and Lady Sarah are actually true. I hope it wins more than one Oscar, it deserves to, but if it only wins one I want it to be best screenplay, it has such a whip-smart script that deserves the win.

Emma stone felt sad and empty because she realized that she's still a sex slave to another master , on the other hand the queen is miserable because she picked the wrong person and will continue living her life that way because of her wrong choices. Guys I really like you channel

The painfully obvious answer to what that last scene meant. Not sure how these two guys who watch movies for a living got conflicting opinions of it.

And on the third watch it is even better. That movie is haunting and grows on you. Regardless of the Oscars, this is a film to stay and stand on time.

SPOILERS My take on the ending is that Emma Stone's character realizes that she's lost. Because maybe she has the power, but she has the power as the queen and her health and her mind are deteriorating, and she will eventually be out of power, and continue to be miserable. Rachel's character has won. She has gotten away from the deteriorating queen and gets to spend time with her husband with everything that she needs. She is free.

I believe that none of them have won. Abigail will forever remain powerless in the hands of the queen, Queen Anne has lost her lover, Sarah, to the cruelty and trickery of Abigail. Sarah has lost as well, although she tries to hide it in her snide remarks near the end, she is miserable and needs power to be happy

Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving The Favourite 10/10. My favourite movie of 2018, hands down, and love you guys' videos so much. Btw, my favourite flavour of ice-cream is, call me an old-school, pure vanilla! Cheers!

I love this movie! Yorgos Lanthimos is just a genius.
I think either The Favourite or Roma should win best picture. Both movies are witten and directed in an excellent way.

    SPOILER:
If Emma Stone wasn't power hungry, she wouldn't have stepped on that bunny just for the fuck of it. When Colman sees her doing this, the forced leg rub with her using Stone's head for balance is a reminder to Stone not to step out of line because Colman's in charge.

*SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS* ..... ..... ..... ..... Ending = nobody has a happy ending. Anne lost Sarah, Sarah lost Anne, and Abigail though higher status than before has no influence whatsoever anymore.

Hoping for The Favourite to win best picture but think it’s gonna go to Roma I just hope it doesn’t get outshined in other categories by movies that weren’t as good like Green Book in my opinion

    A 10 from me too.
I think Abigail was driven to regain her social standing and to be respected as an intelligent, competent and resourceful woman, which were all qualities that she naturally possessed and was entitled to want that status for herself. Had she found herself in any other situation I'm sure she would have been at least somewhat successful. Unfortunately for her, and all around her, the situation that she actually found herself in exposed the damage to her character that had come from her traumatic past.
Seeing her cousin in such an elevated state really drove home how far she had fallen and how huge a task it would be to overcome the obstacles in her way. Her time as a slave had instilled a sense of being cut off from the help and support of others and the instinct for reciprocity that accompanies it. Everything was about looking after number one and all interactions with other people became calculated transactions optimised for maximising short term results. We see this on her wedding night where she is so consumed by this thinking that she all but incapable of doing anything else. Every part of her is focussed on short term targets that seem like they lead to a satisfactory long term outcome but only because she hasn't thought ahead... at all.
Winning to her was... a pineapple.
For me the ending was her realising the true extent of the damage that her desire to win had caused as the Queen, miserable and with health failing, forces her to go through the motions of delivering on her fraudulent promise of powerful sexual connection while deliberately withholding her desire for that connection as a form of punishment... a flex.
Abigail sees clearly that without her drive to win bringing out the passion in her she is exposed as a fraud, simply because she has nothing to gain in this interaction. In the previous scene she'd done her best to cover up her failings with distractions getting wasted but she can't function that way. Her need for some action/distraction when sober leads to her hurting the rabbit which, of course motivates the Queen to assert her dominance and the longer it goes on, the more exposed Abigail feels. She's fully present.
I think it works really well as a study of how trauma can lead to character flaws that lead to inevitable disaster. The flaw of excessive self reliance can develop into narcissism or seemingly senseless self destructive behaviours... It is a lesson that is increasingly relevant as society becomes more atomised.

Very challenging movie and possibly(I haven't seen green book or the star is born yet) the best of 2018.I would give it 9 stars for now and wait for a couple of years to see how memorable it will be...It might be too edgy to win best picture though.

I find this one fascinating. The divide between how this movie and say Mary queen of scots is intriguing. Both have a lot of questions with historical accuracy and people think it comes down to how society perceives each queen was recorded and viewed in today's society. People are now divided with their perception is regarding queen Elizabeth vs Queen Mary vs the interest/perception of queen Anne. There's not much interest in queen Anne's reign which was just as successful as queen Elizabeth. She is known as one the queens who was most involved/well versed in parliament matters. She also had a very tragic life with all the losses of her infants/one son who lived through childhood. I really didn't think this film did queen Anne any wonders In how she was depictated. I do think that if there was any solid historical views of any Lesbian affairs she would be seen in the same way aka negatively by historical records And perhaps viewed as more of a tragic woman and sympathic by today's society. A queen especially was usually vilified by any black mark up on her reputation which affairs with your female servants would definetely be. Think of Anne Boylen or even Marie Antoinette both of whom have had speculations as to having inappropriate affairs (amongst a lot of other stuff) both women were of course executed and very poorly received by their subjects... its so intriguing that Queen Elizabeth who is known as having a very successful reign in her own right is now being seen as less of a sympathetic person in history same with Queen Mary. It was said that Queen Anne and Elizabeth were alike that both were raised as spares (with Queen Elizabeth of course being very much a prisoner of sorts/black spot on her father during her upbringing due to how her mother was killed... queen Mary was essentially brought up knowing she would be queen. Each woman had faults and tragedy in her own life however Mary queen of scotts and queen Elizabeth tend to be more scrutinized by people today. Where as queen Anne is just not very intriguing. My question is why such favoritism by audiences of each film. How come the favorite has so much love for it and Mary queen of scotts is just not at all appreciated. I find it so fascinating. In this respect Mary queen of scotts could be seen in the same light as Marie Antoinette from a few years ago which didn't also get much love drom audiences. Does this say more about a respective monarchs reign, the modern day intrigue of people today or an actual film itself. I went into the favorite not knowing much at all about queen Anne only reading essays about comparisons and her reign after watching both the favorite and Mary queen of scotts. It's all very intriguing to me and now my curiosity has been thrown into queen Anne and her reign. I would love to know more. So if that was the favourites desired outcome for people to be more interested in her reign it succeeded with me. As a whole I didn't love the favourite. I did prefer Mary queen of scots on a historical monarch front.

    • @TheOscarExpert

I think in the end, it's tragic because the power games they were all playing amounted to each player being in a position they now regret. Olivia Colman realizes that Emma Stone does not truly care for her the way Rachel Weisz did, stepping on the bunny proved that. Emma Stone realizes that she's with this crazy person, with tons of trauma, who she doesn't truly care for. Without a force to defy (Weisz's character), there is nothing to the Stone/Colman relationship. The bunnies all represent Colman's children she never could have, and collectively, they represent the trauma in Colman's psyche. Stone is seeing how this person she's being intimate with, this figure of power, is just a fucked up person who still has control over her, and Colman is realizing that Stone's relationship with her is disingenuous. The whole movie they were blind by the games each other was playing to spite others and build themselves up. The end is them facing the reality of what those actions created.

Seen 7 of the 8 nominees (only missing Vice).
The Favourite is probably my second favorite nomination this year, only behind A Star Is Born.
I’d also say it’s the second best nomination this year only behind Roma.
But this is that one nomination each year that I walked in hesitant thinking it would be rather boring and forgettable, meanwhile it was the total opposite of that for me. Loved everything about it.

My favorite flavor of ice cream is probably vanilla but i’m ok with strawberry or any other flavor EXCEPT chocolate because chocolate ice cream is the most disgusting thing ever.
Otherwise, I love The Favourite and it is also my fav of the lot this year! I find it really sad that it isn’t winning anything..
