I went through hundreds of scientific publications to find out which the best sleep stage trackers are that money can buy, depending on your budget. Is it Apple, Google, Samsung, Oura, Garmin, Polar or maybe Fitbit. Well, today you are going to find out! This is a video I’ve been wanting to make for a long time, and the results are super interesting. It also shows us some major problems with sleep tracking I have not addressed in my previous videos. A spreadsheet with all the statistics and references I base my findings on is in the description below, and of course there are timestamps on this video's timeline to make things easier for you.
Detecting whether you are asleep or awake is what wearables would traditionally measure in the early 2010s, with the launch of the first Fitbit Tracker for instance. However, during that same decade more and more companies tried to do something much more complicated: tracking the sleep stages defined by scientists, albeit in a slightly simplified form, which were termed light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep. This is actually really hard, since these are usually studied in the lab by measuring brain waves, eye movements, and muscle movements. Instead, a wearable has to do it based on just your heart beats and movements. In my testing I’ve seen that wearables are becoming much better at this, and more people than ever seem to be using them to keep track of their sleep patterns. Over the last few years I’ve also found that it’s becoming more and more accepted in the scientific community to use smartwatches and smart bands in sleep research. However, for both consumers and scientists it’s important to know which devices are good at tracking stages and which are not so reliable, since some are quite bad. Luckily, scientists are recognizing the value in actually testing the performance of wearables using polysomnography or EEG, giving us an idea which smartwatches are good, and which are not. However, they usually test only one or a few devices at a time, so similar to before I went through literature, and extracted the results from all papers I could find to give us a good overview of the performance of different devices.

Hello Rob, could you review the Huawei watch fit 3? (I was waiting for you to review it before I buy by the way)
thankyou for the informative video as always, next please share the heart rate accuracy spreadsheet from your finding please :)
Hello I know you’re a busy person but I was wondering if you were planning on testing the Withings ScanWatch 2?
Bro the amount of work you put in for every video is crazy. ❤❤❤
I appreciate that!
And appreciated
@TheQuantifiedScientist the oura ring is covered in the united states by the fsa/hsa medical ins
Immediate respect
Love your scientific approach and continuity in the series - huge fan
Wow! happy to hear that 😊
@@TheQuantifiedScientist keep doing this work man, we love it
Rob, the best there is; the only tester on TH-cam placed in the upper right hand corner. Thank you for the great stuff.
Thanks so much!
Thank you very much for showing how the results become less accurate when worn by people with sleep disorders 🙏
Best wearable reviews! Thanks!
Wow, thank you!
@@TheQuantifiedScientist it is very annoying that you plot Polar V, rather than V2 & V3 on your initial graphs. The lack of data from studies is presumably the cause, but it makes the plots useless for most Polar owners. Adding the low end Polar PacerPro in the later graphs doesn't really compensate, unless you can securely state that it uses the same algorithm as the V2 & V3. Likewise the Polar Grit models are totally ignored. In general, not a useful video for me, or most other current or potentially future Polar watch owners !!
@@sja45uk While as a Polar Vantage M user looking to upgrade am interested in a reply, and more Polar device performace comparisons, I do recall that the Pacer Pro was the/one of the highest scoring Polar device in Rob's tests when it comes to HR accuracy, thus best positioned to compare against other manufacturers' "best". Having said that, I wish I were convinced enough by Vantage V3, but HR readings still seem to be inaccurate, even after the latest firmware...
Lets be honest here; According to a large study published by Science Direct 1 February 2024 these reference devices like Dreem 2 head band is anywhere between 55%-82% accurate detecting sleep stages. its like tossing a dice. It does worst on REM sleep detecting .. so if the reference device is off how fair are these tests really ?
All your resting should be vs polysomnography
Really seems like junk science, insane he decided to even include parent company sponsored "studies" into his data. This graph is enough to make the pharmaceutical companies in "dope sick" blush.
Your TH-cam channel is my "go to" before buying any wearable. Your efforts are appreciated!
very underrated channel. thank you for all the effort in testing then.
Waiting for watch fit 3 review
UP! Also waiting for this review to come out
probably similar to band 9 findings
watch fit 3? the huawei one?
up
I hope the tests will show results no worse than Huawei watch fit 2, because I already ordered them 😄
My comment probably gets buried under so many other comments. I'll post this again : please also test Ultrahuman Ring Air!
Having said that - this video is super detailed and helpful! Kudos to you :)
The video I was waiting for!
I recently changed my major to data analytics and these videos were a huge inspiration ❤
This has been a fascinating top for me as well. I love diving into the data behind it all!
Great to see tested and quantified results! Well done!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent review as usual!!! Great work 👍👍👍
Very interesting studies and I appreciate the notes about which company sent the studies. All in all great overview and wonderful detail!
Can’t wait for your Huawei Watch Fit 3 review.
I just subscribed, we need more scientific tech reviewers like you bro, love the content!
Glad I found your channel. Beautiful... I just love the detail and effort put in. A+ stuff imo!
Thank you for your dedication!!
Such a comprehensive review! Awesome job. Subscribed!
Thanks again Rob. Always precise & direct information. Hoping you can continue to supply us with all this valued information well into the future.
your reviews are the only ones that matter to me honestly, love your videos!!!!
Thank you so much friend ❤
Thanks. l LOVE YOUR REVIEWS!
My pleasure!
I appreciate your approach to testing these devices. Top notch!
Love your content! It’s so helpful☺️
Another fantastic and very detailed review - keep it up Rob! 🚀
Thanks for that compliment! :-)
Thank you for your reviews
Thank you for all your time you spend doing this research. I am curious what improvements the future will bring us.
You and me both!
This video is gold, than you so mucho for doing this
Nice Rob, I give this video ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for sleep content! I'm really excited that we are moving in to new product season, hope Google doesn't quit on the Fitbit trackers.
Thanks! 😊
Great video, as usual. I have the Fitbit charge 6 and refuse to give up the battery life and the fact that it solely is a fitness tracker and not like having a phone on my hand. I only let the Fitbit notify me of calls. Good to know it’s still a bit up there in accuracy. I’ve tried premium and basic and found that Fitbit without premium, is still beneficial. Thanks for posting!
love your content!
Great work!
Hi Rob, great and insightful video, I sleep using a BiPAP NIV to treat CO2 Retention as a result of being born with Scoliosis and Hydrocephalus, I’m looking for the best sleep stage tracker, I do use a Wellue O2 ring to track my oxygen sats and that works well but I want a tracker for Sleep Stages, keep up the great work👍
Nice video, thank you for the content
This guy is a legend for putting such work
Thank you for a high-quality video with a lot of literature review and analysis!
Thanks for the amazing job, Rob! Could you please do a review of the Huawei Watch D?
Always loved your reviews, thank you for taking things to an even further level. Hoping to see reviews on the oneplus watch 2, newest withings offerings and whatever else might come out in the future. Keep being awesome :D
Withings ScanWatch 2 pleeeease!!!
@@mtsrln And the Nova too! Based on the interview that happened a couple of years ago, withings was really looking to step it all up further.
This is insane work 👏👏👏
Thank you so much for your valuable work and your fantastic video that is both easy to understand and beneficialto us consumers
Hello Rob, thank you for your thorough reviews. Do you intend to make one on the ringconn? Thank you!
You're the best, Thank you
You’re the unbeatable master of sleep tracker and I absolutely adore your data charts, plots, and visualizations. Your attention to detail makes it clear you’re German (and that’s meant as the highest praise)! 🙂Thank you for your work!
Good summary!
Huge thanks for the great work! Any plans on reviewing the Helio ring from Amazfit?? Cheers from Brazil! ^^
Great content! It would be cool to see your take on software from 3rd parties on the Apple Store. Specifically AutoSleep
Thanks for this great review. How about the Muse S headband?
Will you be doing a breakdown/analysis of apps like Athlytic and Superset (now Bevel)?
Bought the Huawei band 9 solely just for my running HR monitor so I can gather some HR data while saving for a more premium running watch. Suprisingly, that watch collect good data of sleep too, just see the time I go to bed and the wake up time, and the duration match and it seems just accurate enough, so i’m happy with the purchase
Huawei Watch Fit 3, please!
Thank you Rob! I have been following you for quite some time. I ended up buying a Fitbit that's reasonably good in sleep tracking yet within my budget. Unfortunately Google bought Fitbit and now it's messing with it. I have a feeling I will have to stop tracking my sleep because I can't afford to buy the expensive ones plus the monthly fees. If tracking my sleep caused me stress it's not worth even trying.
Great video! Why haven't you included the Polar Verity Sense in this review?
Oura is covered in the united states with the fsa/hsa medical account.
So good! No nonsense biasness like other youtubers. Thanks a lot mate!
No problem 👍
Huawei Band 9 full review when 👀
great test
Huawei watch fit 3 review button 👇
Just processed a first set of data in the Watch Fit 3 :-). Video will come soon(ish)
Can't wait... I bought fit 2 for its excellence in accuracy👀. Will fit 3 be a worthy successor or a " band 9" surprise? 👀 (😱🤭)
@@TheQuantifiedScientist I'll be waiting for your review for the watch fit 3 before I buy it, your the only source and TH-camr to review watches thank you for reviews.
@@floradu2001 right now i have a watch fit 3, i love it, I just hope it's accurate enough and can compete with an apple watch
@@TheQuantifiedScientist Please the redmi watch 4 too
Love your reviews 👍 have you tried the Ultrahuman Ring Air yet? Would be cool to see an alternative to the Oura which has a subscription model.
Agreed, but he's been heavily pushing Oura ring, starting to wonder if he's
a sponsor of. Numerous Ring Brands out there.
@@george6252i think so, he sticks on aurora, put in first place, seems like a hidden soponsorahip
Thank you!
Wow! Thanks for the support
great work 🙏 would love to see the ultrahuman air ring
This is a very detailed and research based post which is just what I was looking for. I have a 30 free trial for a Whoop band and am glad I can return it. It is both more and less than I want. I haven't yet figured out how to adjust the time I am asleep and Whoop doesn't seem to know how to do it either! It seems to know when I exercise, but I know how long I exercise and the intensity so I don't need that info. Plus Apple watch has that capability although it isn't easy to set.
I have an older model Apple watch which has sleep tracking and think I will buy a new one. My only hesitation is that the study showing it is great was conducted by Apple. Even if I am not totally thrilled I will have a new Apple watch and no subscription payment.
A big thank you for this report.
Are you planning on reviewing any of the recent Withings products?
Excellent review. A question.
You said apple Fitbit are good if you have normal healthy sleepers.
What if a person has really bad sleep issues, verging on insomnia which watches are most accurate to track sleep activity?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Looking forward to watch your Ultrahuman ring review!
If enough of us mention this he might, I've had one for 8 days now.
@@george6252 What can you say about its accuracy? Can you compare it to other devices?
Nice review. Curious what the results would be if only Slow Wave Sleep would be regarded.
Loving your videos!!! So useful!! Any plans to review OnePlus watch 2 in the future? You are the only TH-camr reviewing the accuracy of smartwatches
Waiting room aswell
Hi! I have collected data, but somehow never got to making the video yet...
@@TheQuantifiedScientist That is amazing to hear!!
Wow thanks!! I bought the OnePlus watch 2 and I'm curious about its performance. Obviously my expectations are relatively low as it does undercut the competition by some and OnePlus technology is not as mature as the others...
Youre the best.
Great one!
can you please review the ultrahuman ring ?
This a very valuable work. It must be quite time consuming while holding down a job too.
I thing seeing how a fairly decent device, like the pixel 2 or Huawei GT4 has changed after a few months of updates would be a fascinating video too.
Thank you for sharing! By using more than 2 wearable devices, with some statistically methodology, increase the correlational effect with the EEG results?
Thank you for your effort!
Great video ! It will be interresting to test the last Withings. My cardiologist says they have the best heart tracking.
Many thanks Rob. Interesting. I had a Pacemaker installed a month ago. I had too low a heart rate. RHR has gone from low 40's to a floor at 50 soon to be shifted to 55 as a base. As a result, both Whoop and Oura give me very low Recovery Scores and alerts to elevated HR. I've contacted both tech supports asking if there should be some sort of adjustment, but I actually get complete waffle back. I'm thinking of giving up on Whoop as I feel it doesn't represent how I actually feel upon awaking. I'll stick to Oura as multiple reviews are extremely positive on Sleep tracking. Apple Watch or Garmin (Epix Pro) is a real dilemma. Sports tracking on Apple is not great in my opinion. I swim, pool and open water and it is so fiddly getting Apple to Pause or Stop whereas Garmin is a button press. On the other hand the HR monitoring on AW is excellent plus, if you get into trouble it's LTE for contacting help.
Are you planning on doing a review of the Coros vertix 2s?
Watching all of your videos made me a smart consumer, so i got a polar h10.
Hi! Rob, please review Huawei Watch Fit 3. Thanks!
First of all, thank you so much for been doing review with true data sets.
I know we are all waiting for your HUAWEI WATCH FIT 3!! Haha...
By the way, I am not sure if you can do some HONOR's review as they MIGHT have really good products in the marketing as well...eg, Honor Watch 4, Honor Choice Haylou watch, Honor Band 9...
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing :-)
Thank u a lot 🎉🎉🎉
I own a Fitbit Sense 2 and a Fitbit Charge 5. I can confirm, they are tracking sleep different. Even on fitness, they are different. What I recognized, if they are not fitted on the right spot, they're showing divergent data. That's why I'm a little sceptic, when you're wearing three or more at the same time. Anyway, I do enjoy your channel, keep going.
As an experiment, I wore an Amazfit, Polar Unite, Fitbit Sense 2, and Samsung 4 AND Muse S and Dreem 2 headbands all at the same time for six months. The EEG headbands were consistent in their somnographs with the only differences being in the amount of REM sleep. The watches were ALWAYS wrong, especially start times. The discrepancies were huge. The Amazfit was the worst and I stopped wearing it within a month. The only way to compare the somnographs was to align the start times, which I took from the Dreem 2. Conclusion: you cannot rely on smart watches for somnographs. It's a real shame that the Dreem 2 was taken out of the consumer market. The Muse headbands company is focused on meditation (always unreliable). There is no affordable wearable EEG sleep monitor on the market.
Since you can't get really buy a Dreeem device anymore, how does Muse S fair for sleep tracking? I noticed it was used in your previous video (with more electrodes attached).
Can we have a similar video for fitness tracking, sports, workouts ?
I,m really curious about the watch fit 3 , I see you already wear it in this video !
Rob, outstanding overview. Many thanks. I would be curious if my Garmin Fenix 7 Pro has improved over the previous generations of Fenix products.
Garmin, send Rob some new watches for testing!
Would be nice if you could let us know how to get our hands on some eeg devices.
please do a video about ranking heart rate accuracy in general
Haven't listened to the video yet. But here is my opinion and why.
Whoop is great. Mostly because I've been able to wear it 24/7 for 2 years (except for showers) and it is comfortable and gives good data.
I tried the Oura Ring. I thought it was good, but could it was uncomfortable, and after a month took it off and never put it back on. (Cannot be great if not comfortable.)
My Apple Watch has too short a battery life, so I take it off to recharge every night.
Hey Rob, you should Def's test the new ultrahuman ring air 😊
Please test apple watch + Athlytic , according to your graph this should be the best solution in regards of sensors, accuracy & price.
Hi, will there ever be a video about the Redmi Watch 4? :(
First, highly appreciate your time and effort for making those videos.
I wanted to ask if you can tell where to google pixel 2 stand against apple watch?
Please do a video on the Withings ScanWatch 2 :)
Looking forward to more smart ring tests.
In my country there is a very good special offer on Huawei watch Fit 3 and it's only for 2 days !! Please just tell me that, is Huawei watch fit 3 are good as fit2 ?? This information is enough for me.
thx for the video, i noticed that there is no mention of whoop 4.0?
The spreadsheet 😍
Great job, thank you! Although I was expecting to see the Mi Watch in this review because it performed well in your test, unlike the Mi band, but unfortunately you didn't include it in the review.
@TheQuantifiedScientist have you tested Muse S? If not, can you do it for us?
