Spinning Jumbo Yarn as Roving

- Arm knitting and using huge needles and hooks has become more popular so jumbo yarn is more available in the big box craft stores. Guess what? Jumbo yarn looks just like roving! So...how does it spin?
I bought 4 different jumbo yarns and in this video I will spin each one and let you know if it is worth the spin.

I was buying Cheviot for $20.00 a pound (roving) I decided once just to see what else the vendor sold. I found an item called arm knitting roving for $140.00 for 10 pounds. If my math is correct I saved $60.00 for the same wool (Cheviot) sold under a different terminology. I'm sold on trying these various chunky yarns to see what else is available on a paupers income.
This is what I actually used to learn how to spin. I went to my local craft store picked up a big ball of this thick roving came home and started playing around on my spinning wheel
Me too! I figured I'd practice on something cheap before I used my precious wool, it definitely made a huge difference in taking the pressure off.
I just had a "derr moment" watching this! Since illnesses hit around 10 years ago I haven't been able to tolerate wool, so haven't been able to spin. I've never thought to use acrylics to spin, so I'll have to see what's available in Australia!😜 Blessings from South Australia!💕🐨

Yeah, my motto is, if I can draft it - I will try to spin it. I have a bunch of that stuff and it spins beautifully.
I remember seeing this video near the time it released. This has always been in the back of my mind. I just bought a drop spindle this year on Prime day. Today I went to Hobby Lobby and bought a lot of jumbo yarn. I also watched your beginner video on how to spin. I hope I can get the hang of it. I will be using your videos to help along the way. I've spun the Loops and Threads Luxe before because I wanted a thinner ply for a project. It's soooo smooth, but the tufts get everywhere. I'm pretty sure I inhaled a mitten's worth of yarn while doing it!

I think it would be cool to see the roving yarn spun on a spindle. If the roving yarn is potentially good for beginners, and not all beginners can afford a spinning wheel, but most can afford a spindle, I think it would be good to see that. Like, I know the principles are basically the same, but I'd also be intrigued if it would draft differently and such on the spindle compared with the wheel (still new to learning about the spinning world).
I used Yarnbee roving yarn to learn how to use my drop spindle. I'd never spun before and I didn't want to mess up nice fiber. I loved using it to learn. 10 of 10, recommend to newbies.

I have blended this with wool, by weight, to make sock yarn! ALSO: spin the opposite twist to keep the jumbo yarn from over twisting as you spin (if the product is z spun, then s spin it as a single.)

I WISH I had seen this prior to shelling out for some! I bought some that was purportedly merino, but it was definitely what I would describe as seconds quality, short staples and quite coarse and dry.
I gave it to the scrapstore I volunteer at for felters to use, I couldn't bring myself to put the effort in to spinning it in the end. Then bought myself some Corriedale and some Andean that was on special offer and felt sooooo much happier.
We are soooo lucky to have money to spend on our hobbies and pass-times, where we can suit ourselves and make just the thing. Was just reading Mikey's recent posting about someone criticising another person's make because it was made from what that person had available, and being quite thoughtless and hurtful in the process. I don't think we always realise what a privilege it is to be able to select and afford just what we want when we want it.
I feel better about that by donating and swapping items at the scrapstore and facilitating other people's making by advising and suggesting ways and materials to do things.
You do a great job too, Evie, advising and showing us how to make the best use of what we have, and make some of those possibly wasteful experiments for us so that we aren't making expensive mistakes with what we purchase. All the best, will pay closer attention in future!!!!!

Gosh I would never have thought of using jumbo yarn for spinning. That's innovative and thanks for showing us different types. I'll definitely be looking these more closely next time

Im so glad I found this!! I don’t spin *yet* but I bought some showstopper a long time ago with this exact idea and now that I’m buying a wheel I know I’ll want something to practice with right away!

This gives me some great ideas. I used some bulky yarns to knit up an Afghan, and was left with bits and pieces. Nothing long enough to do anything with, but too much to just throw away. I have a career, so...I see some really different yarn in my future. Thanks for this.

Funny, I was in Hobby Lobby yesterday looking at all the chunky roving style yarns and thought, “gee, wonder if anyone has tried to spin this and what the results were.” I go on TH-cam today and your video pops into my feed. I I'm new so I'm using a dis first on these yarn bee province, and its spinning up quite nicely. I hope to spin directly from roving and relate soon. I love your videos and your pooch! I have a well behaved kitty that lets me know when the garbage truck is near.
This is how i started out spinning with a drop spindle i made from a chopstick and glowsticks attached to the thing that makes it into a ball
I had that fluff spinning Nube. I turned the fiber around!

There’s lots of sellers on Etsy that sell undyed wool, which is generally cheaper anyway, that’s good for beginners too. Maybe a next step after these is wetbelly
Hi, I just found your channel. I have bought some jumbo yarns just to spin them. I have have my wheel for a while but I don't tend to spin a lot. I crochet a ton, and buy a lot of yarn. So it is hard to justify buying expensive rovings also. Thanks for the video. I loved hearing how the jumbo yarns compare to spinning wool. Have you thought about plying the yarns that you made in this video? Either on themselves or plying 2 of the bobbins together? Would love to see that in a video too.
As a spinner I have thought about spinning cotton balls so I get the desire to spin all the things
The ones without wool sound like faux alpaca (fancy!!)
I am just adding a comment to inspire you for making more videos because they are so good. and we appreciate them very much. maybe an idea is how to make roving with ADD is and how to blend with hand carters.

This reminds me of when I was young and very poor our local pharmacist wouls save the cotton/poly from bottles for me to spin.

The best kind of fiber for ‘jumbo’ can only be synthetic, because the staple length of acrylic and nylon can be as long as you need it

I’ve heard of but never seen or tried 🤔. . . . . spinning from cotton wool balls! Those cosmetic/first aid balls of fluffy cotton we all have in our bathroom cabinet. Have you tried spinning them, if not would you (and make a video of course)? Please? 😬

I'm spinning the Chunky Luxe on a drop spindle at the moment. It is very slippery, and it needs a LOT of twist before it will stick together!

My wife's yarn shop got a lot of Big Freakin Wool (BFW) a while back, with instructions for hand knitting a shawl... which took 4 skeins, and weighed about 2 pounds. 70% wool, 30% polyester. When it came it, I said "That's roving!"
I've used it as a beginner's roving for a lot of people... My wife handed a ball of the plyed yarn to the KFI rep, asked what he thought of it, and he said it was a very nice yarn... what is it?
He was gobsmacked to find out it was his product, spun.
My only issue with spinning the stuff is that I have to keep untwisting the roving as I draft.

"I look at stuff and think: Hm, could I spin that?" Of course! When I look at a long haired dog, cat, etc... :D What was the weirdest hair/fleece you spinned? I just found out that you can make yarn out of nettle too! :D
I have spun nettle! It is a bit like if flax and silk had a baby. I'm not sure what my weirdest spin was because what might be weird to me could be common place to someone else. It all depends. I suppose that the yarn I spun from mohair and flax that I blended with the shreds of a book I put through a paper shredder was pretty weird. It was a woven art piece for a gallery show on the theme of censorship.💕

When I was younger, maybe 15 or 16, I got finished brushing my fluffy dog and I decided to get my drop spindle out and try to spin the fluff from the brush. She was a bichon so the brush I had to use on her was a wire slicker brush, basically identical to a hand carder. I made a couple feet of some fluffy dog yarn. My family wasn’t as impressed as I was about it.

I actually used jumbo yarn when I first started spinning bc wool was very expensive. I made some nice yarn using these and a drop spindle and got a lot of good practice!

I found some jumbo yarn at a Goodwill and have been spinning it for a while. I have no idea what the brand is but I have to stop periodically to remove vm and I see coarse hairs along the way. I don't find that it sticks but I quite often have it stop through my hands, haha. I'd love to know the content of this stuff. 🤷🏽♀️

These jumbo yarns always made me think it's just skipping a step and selling it as something fancy. Don't they felt super duper easily? Like, if my jumbo mega cuddle blanket is only good for 1 and a half cuddles and I can never wash it lest it becomes a ball...?
Yeah, I haven't seen any of these survive as an actual blanket in their super mega jumbo form. Great for spinning though!
Interesting. Only this week I saw a bath mat in Aldi made from "spinnable" fibre but haven't seen loose fibre. I'm wondering how you found your source. Especially the brightly coloured fibre.

I think of all four, the very colorful Stretched Taffy was my favorite. It was pretty and although not exactly wool like, still gave me the experience of a nice draft and controlled spin. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!
one of the big reasons i spin roving yarns/acrylic yarns is because my husband cant wear wool due to being allergic, so i spin acrylic so he can wear my hand spun items

Thanks for the sub! It makes me so happy to know people are enjoying my videos! I think the Stretched Taffy was my favorite to spin. If you are a beginner, I don't reccomend the "Showstopper". It was so sticky that drafting it was practically impossible! Save yourself the frustration. All the singles I spun for the video came out fine. I'm going to use them all in a woven wall hanging. It will be in an upcoming video!

Had toyed with idea of playing with those products. Love drop spinning for cost and was wondering if either hackled wool with or plied wool with acrylic if would give good sock yarn. Then remembered had a huge gift stash of acrylics and cast on more socks as worsted socks do wear well and set to spinning corriedale interspersed with fawn alpaca as I like the look but sort of wish to hackle things together so uniform properties... Thing is ... what are you going to do with your newly spun yarn??
I started with a drop spindle and you are right, it's the cost effective way to get into the craft. I plan to weave with these singles. It will be in an upcoming video. I like your idea of blending acrylic with wool on a hackle. I know that plying strands of different fibers can give neat effects, but since each ply will wear differently, I don't think it works well for items that need durability like socks.

may I inspire you for a video on how to maintain our Wheels. I haven't asked for traditional and it needs oiling and I don't know where toilet I'm just going to oil it everywhere things rub
How did you set the twist? Will a hot wash by hand do it? Do you need to ply it? I almost bought some today but just before I tossed it into my cart, I had the thought can I set the twist?
I did ply the Showstopper and the Chunky Luxe Big. They were interesting because they really wanted to find their balance more so than what I usually feel with wool yarn. After soaking and drying them they relaxed but not as much as wool. The yarn was very soft. I used the Stretched Taffy in a scarf and it was just fine as a single. I blocked the scarf and it has been great (and cute!). The Free Spirit is still sitting in my stash.
Would you consider plying any of these with alpaca to add stability, or would you use 100% wool?
I would say try out a little bit and see if you like it. You could ply it, or blend it with other fibers and come up with your own custom blends! See what works best in your projects. So yes, you absolutely could ply or blend with these! Happy spinning! 🧶💜🌷
how do you set the twist in acrylic spinning? or do you ply it?
It doesn't set like wool. It would need to be plied if you don't want to work with the energy.
Have you experimented with mixing some of your dog's hair with some wool or some other fibers together?

Absolutely! I almost always use double drive when I spin flax.

Yes! You can spin any of these on a drop spindle too! 🙂

It seems that yarn no 3 isn't available anymore, is there another roving yarn you recommend to learn and practice drop spinning with?
I should really update this video with some other jumbo yarns that are available now. I noticed my Michaels has several options they didn't have before. If you have a Michaels near by you could check there?
How did the yardage translate from chunky to spun?
I honestly don't quite remember. Thinner will always have more yardage. How much ultimately depends on the individual spinner. 💕🧶
Can these yarns be drum carded?
Oh yes! That would be fun!
After spinning, can these yarns be used to create clothing?
Yes, I think they can be crocheted, knit, or woven to create fabric or clothing. I'm not sure how they would stand up to washing and I would probably wash some swatches to check for pilling before committing it to a large project like a sweater. I made a scarf from the Stretched Taffy and I love it. It is really soft!

Yes! Just about anything you can spin on a wheel, you can spin with a drop spindle!

Is this chunky yarn also called felted roving or is that (felted roving) something altogether different ?
If it is truly felted, you won't be able to draft it apart. 🧶💜

If you can handle it use a dryer sheet and rub your hand on it regularly while spinning. Static cling be gone!
