  • www.compcams.com/ PowerTV visited Brenspeed to install a set of COMP Cams® stage 2 NSR camshafts into a 2011 5.0 Mustang with the new Coyote engine. After tuning, the Mustang picked up 32 rwhp, performed great and sounded wicked.

    $1500 for a set of cams is rough. Especially when you only see 17 peak whp.

    • @matthewschiebout9081
      @matthewschiebout9081 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Doesn't make any sense, does it? $1500 should be spent elsewhere, such as suspension or a new set of tires?

    • @177SCmaro
      @177SCmaro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      17 peak whp, probably around 25 crank hp is only part of the story. What matters much more is average power and torque. But you're right, there is room for improvement/optimization with the new cams.

    Unfortunately we don't have any dyno numbers as of yet, but Brenspeed (where this project was completed) may have that information. Thank you.

    @vipexperformance Thanks for the suggestion, we're in the process of setting up our video schedule for 2012 and we've passed this along to the production team.

    How about the stage 3s with a stock intake to gain back a little torque? I know it's not totally optimal, but I was hoping for the best of both worlds, a little higher rpms, while recouping a little torque?? What do you think?

  • @Mr2013GT
    @Mr2013GT 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those were stage 2's. Stage 3's will gain a Coyote 49 hp and climbing at 7,500 rpm.
    If you take a full-bolties 5.0 (headers/exhaust, CAI, tune, boss intake manifold, throttle body, accel coil on plugs - let's say 430 rwhp, which is already a 500 hp engine) and install stage 3's? That's approaching 500 rwhp, probably around 530 or so crankshaft hp, all motor. That's fuckin' sick, dude! Not to mention the engine won't be as stressed as it would under boost....

  • @jackal119

    Any Dyno maps for the stage 1 would love to see the power band pattern. As those a pretty narrow very clearly more for high RPM operation which is not really going to work for me. Also any plans on a thumpr cam in the future?

  • @Mr2013GT
    @Mr2013GT 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    All 3 stages are $1,499 from comp cams. It does seem a little overpriced, but when you look at the price of a cold air intake/tuning device/Boss manifold/exhaust put together, some people would want the high RPM gains that cams offer to make the most use of all the bolt-ons.

  • @unmccoy2003
    @unmccoy2003 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I hate to sound like I'm trying to rain on any parade here, but won't the tune itself take credit for most of the HP gain? A lot of people see in the mid to upper 20 hp gain from just a tune. I would think the cam would be good for a lot more.

    Generally speaking you should not see a huge difference in fuel mileage. You can expect a little loss in mileage, but certainly nothing major.

  • @smokeum12
    @smokeum12 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Will the installation of the stage 2 or 3 result in a choppy idle? I have owned several built fox bodies with big cams and I want that for my coyote. Not my daily driver so I don't care how it effects drive ability.

    As for the dyno maps your best bet is probably to contact Brenspeed directly as that's where the text took place. And feel free to give us a call at 1.800.999.0853 regarding the Thumpr cams as a custom grind.

    I'm curious as to how you calculated your drive-train losses :-) Somehow, you lost 70hp from crank to wheels (430rwhp from 500chp) and then you only lost 30hp from crank to wheels by adding cams (500rwhp from "530 or so crankshaft hp"). Those are awesome cams. Do they add traction too? Or maybe they will reduce your curbweight?

  • @jamesdavis5782
    @jamesdavis5782 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    bolt on and cammed LS would do just as much and more. my old 02 camaro put down 404 hp at the wheels with headers, CAI, and a mild cam. that's at least 450 on the motor for a car that is supposed to be rated at 335 hp stock. that's over 100 hp gain

    • @jamesdavis5782
      @jamesdavis5782 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh and btw, my cam was $335 plus $20 for LS3 valve springs

    • @jamesdavis5782
      @jamesdavis5782 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My comment was based on the price of the install. I spent about $1000 on headers and the cam swap plus dyno tuning and picked up over 100 hp. Show me 100 hp for $1000 or less that isn't nitrous

      Btw, even a Chevy guy likes to know what the Ford guys are up to. No sense in getting upset about it

    • @kickblake
      @kickblake 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your comment was based on...not a ford 5.0. Hence, no one cares what you spent or how much hp you got from it. But you had to be "that guy" that felt the need to talk about his LS.

    • @kickblake
      @kickblake 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      BTW: you could have known what Ford guys were up to without making your "my car is better" post. But nope, you're "that guy."

    First, I understood what you WROTE. I will quote you: "let's say 430 rwhp, which is already a 500 hp engine". Not until your reply did you write "basically" or "probably just under" or "like 480". Second, I'm not disputing your hp gain estimates. Your theoretical setups had vastly different DRIVE-TRAIN LOSSES. 500-430=70 lost from crank to wheels in the first setup. 530-500=30 after cams.

      That power is gained everywhere above 5k rpm, means you're accelerating faster at every rpm in the power band on average and it is quite noticable in racing. Every millisecond counts. These cams are a solid difference in the quarter, imagine on a road course, where all those tenths of seconds gained in between corners can add up to seconds per lap.
