      hey i want to give you a sugestion and you can do more complicated layouts. In dentirstry instead of clay we use wax. Tou can make your chambers from wax. Pour the cement or what you are using w8 for it to let it dry and after it is dry you heat it a bit and the wax simply melts out of it.

    I realise this video is old but I used to cut my lids the same as you have with the Dremel and the edge is never straight and doesn't look great. I've found the best method is to use a hole saw bit. Drill the pilot hole forwards as a guide them out the drill in reverse to drill with the hole saw. It comes out super clean. I now do two nice round holes rather than one large rectangular hole.

    Awesome video! How do you plan on keeping that nest hydrated? Will you just spray some water on the surface?

    • @AntsScandinavia
      @AntsScandinavia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good question, Plaster absorbs alot of moisture, and I have placed cavities both low and high so they get a moisture gradient to choose from. If I see that they strictly inhabite the top parts, I will drill a hole in the center and fill that with water. Thats also the reason why I put a moss there, cause it will get watered, alot.
      Good question tho! 😃

    If you let it dry more before removing the clay it gets easier.
    And you should definetly let it dry more before you put it back in the Box. This prevents mould.

    I've done this with grout. How does plaster compare to grout? I with grout was lighter....it's so heavy!

    • @AntsScandinavia
      @AntsScandinavia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, plaster is not made to withstand the elements of outside, this causes it to absorb more moisture. Which we in this case want ;) Grout is the opposite, does not absorb moisture as good, although it depends on brand and design, but put simply, plaster is better, because it absorbs more moisture :)

  • @jemfinnaughty4062
    @jemfinnaughty4062 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How do you hydrate this nest though? What if you made an indent in the plaster (at the top) and made a mini lake, would it just absorb into the plaster and drown the ants, water them effectively, or not do enough?

    • @AntsScandinavia
      @AntsScandinavia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are probably the sixth person to ask this, I should have been much more clear to explain and also thought it through before a bit more. I thought that the plaster would absorb enough water to make the inside moist, but it doesent really do a perfect job of it. I mean, the insides are moist, but not as much as I would like it. As you saw, I placed chambers near the top and close to the bottom, thi is for the ants to have a gradient to choose from. So if I see that they strictly choose the upper part chambers, I will probably drill some holes in the side, or make a "lake"/well as you said. But if they habitat the chambers below and above, I will probably not do much. Great question, next time I will be much more clear about this. If you are going to keep moisture loving ants, this formicarium may not be Ideal, make a Ytong nest instead then. Hope this helped :)

      @jemfinnaughty4062 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    As long as the clay paint/clay is safe for ants, this is a cool formicarium! It's better to keep our worlds dry, to make sure that the ants don't try to dig into it. There is also missing humidity for the nest though

      Also what do you do to stop the ants escaping? I've used an old fish tank that works perfect, except the air holes at the top are too large the ants can escape, thinking of a way of filling them all in or stopping them climbing to the top somehow?

    • @AntsScandinavia
      @AntsScandinavia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, terracotta formicarium XD, Well, you are supposed to use some sort of barrier for the ants, so they cant cross and escape :D Some commonly used are babypowder mixed with alcohol (the alcohol evaporates suuper fast, and then the baby powder sticks to the glass, when the ants climb it, they fall) you can also use Olive oil (my favorite) its organic and looks the best :) However, it is not the best at keeping ALL ants in, but 90%, your lasius wont be able to cross it if applyed correctly :)

    Hi i wounder if you are from Sweden. And if you are from Sweden how did you get promotion to own ants

    • @AntsScandinavia
      @AntsScandinavia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Japp, ajg är svensk! But you may not talk swedish, so I am going to answer in english; Well, currently I have not imported ANY of my colonies, all I have in test tubes are in hibernation right of now, and all of them are cought from outside near my house, so swedish ants. However, if you want to collect ants from another country and bring them back legally, you should contact a couple authorities, and be sure to write down names and what they say, if you get in trouble. Why? well you need to list what kind of animals you will bring back, latin name and how many. Also, animals without a spine, ants, dont need to be "payed" to import within EU, so thats a good thing! (and other animals like termites and mantids) There is a lot more I can write, however, I cant really understand your question clearly, but if you are just wanting to keep native ants and collect them here in sweden, its all permit free ;) (buying ants from other countrys is another thing tho) Message me on my discord if you want more info. Hope this helped m8! And where in sweden do u live?

I am sorry for not giving a straight answer, but keeping a colony steady at a low number primaerly depends on species but also the food you offer.

    How do you hydrate it?

    • @AntsScandinavia
      @AntsScandinavia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can add acrilic paint to grout

    Ants Scandinavia I made a plaster home for my fire ants but didn't moisten it and most of the workers died what do I do 😭

    • @AntsScandinavia
      @AntsScandinavia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooooh, thats sad :( Where are you from? How large is the colonie? How large is the nest? How long ago was this? How have you designed the nest? If the queen is still alive, and the colony is smaller than 50 workers, just put some testtubes with water on the top, so that they can move in there if they want moisture ASAP (also cover the tubes, so its dark) Then I guess just water the nest :) If the colony is super bid, like 300 workers, I would make another one, where you think about moisturing solutions a bit more, and connect vie vinyl tubing :)

    Surely it would have been easier to delicately push the plaster back into position with your hand than banging the whole thing on the table as the method you used instantly removes the possibility of using a glass tank or museum glass.

    • @AntsScandinavia
      @AntsScandinavia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, if it was that easy to push it down, I would have done just that :) Now the thing is, that is is not that easy to put it back as it may seem, if you have ever tried this method, or using plaster at all, you would know that it actually expands a tiny bit in air, because it is so soft of a material, and no, it does not "instantly remove" the possibility of using glass, this is not a rule video, just an inspirational one, to spawn Ideas :) I will actually make one in glass later, but then, I will probably not thrust it into the table as I could safely do with this one. :)

      @AntsScandinavia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ih, I thought you ment hibernation* Well, ye I am also aware of that, and that I should have thought about that. However, the plaster is such a good absorber of moisture, that if you drill a hole from the side, into the plaster and fill that with water, it will spread into the chambers. So, drill a hole in the side, into the plaster, and fill that up :)
