Of the films listed in this video, I picked up: Top Gun Maverick, the Raiders trilogy, Reservoir Dogs and Drive. The only one that is in my personal top five is Maverick, but I only thought the movie itself was simply "OK", it just rehashed too many of the same beats of the first film. What I liked about the home release was just how good it looks and sounds. My personal top five is: 1. Dune 2. The Batman 3. Everything, Everywhere All At Once 4. The Godfather 5. Top Gun Maverick
@@4K_Kings Miami Connection, Fright Night, Heavy Metal, Drive (the 88 films release, not gosling) and Highlander. Those were my favorites. The Road House 4k VSU is objectively the best release of the year all around but those other five are my favorites.

How was the transfer on Saturday Night Fever? I want to pick it up, but a comment on another of our videos said the blu-ray is comparable if not better. I'm torn on picking it up after seeing it in your top 5... 😕
Russ, great call on the Synapse version of Phenomena! I also have that and it is a fantastic transfer and package. In fact, I almost like it as much as Synapse's Suspiria... which I think in itself is a reference disc. Those two are probably my favorite Argento 4K transfers (even though I love Tenebrae and Deep Red as well). And Matt, I also thought Real Genius was a surprisingly good transfer. That one did kind of come out of nowhere... I never thought we'd see it on 4K either. And Videodrome looks incredible! I haven't given too much thought to my Top 5, as there were just so many great 4K releases this year (top 5 is almost too difficult to narrow down for me). But I would definitely put Road House at the top overall, with Reservoir Dogs not far behind. Amityville Horror was also surprisingly good.
Thanks Fuzz... It also felt good that Synapse had the superior product for some reason to me. Nothing against Arrow at all, they're one of the best, but it genuinely surprised me to see Synapse put out the better packaging over them (nothing against Synapse either, great label). I picked up Amityville but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I can't wait to either, that's a film I've seen multiple times in the VHS days so the upgrade will feel epic to my eyes.
@@russceasetheruss5360 Yeah you're in for a treat with Amityville. Before I got the new VS release, I hadn't seen the film in many, many years. And I remembered it being a very drab and dreary film. But when I popped in the new VS restoration, I was stunned at how much the film came to life. Surprisingly colorful, and everything in the image just really pops. Synapse knocked it out of the park with their versions of Phenomena and Tenebrae. I also liked their versions more than Arrow's (even though they're the same restorations, I thought Synapse did a better job on the art. I wish they'd done something similar on the packaging with their Suspiria and Demons 1/2 4K releases -- awesome releases, but no rigid slipcase). Looking forward to seeing what Synapse does next.

@@robertfaulkner1824 Awesome movies. Heavy Metal is on the list for having the best transfer I've seen of an an old animated film. Sharp and raw with film grain intact. Generally 2D animated films get the shaft and they try to make them look digital. The movie itself is unique but not something I would recommend outside of genre fans and artists.

It’s hard to contest that Top Gun: Maverick is the demo disc of the year, but I have yet to get through my purchases to make a definitive list. Though that Reservoir Dogs upgrade is undeniably jaw dropping, when compared to what we’ve been having to deal with as collectors all this time. A great way to end the year, with a lot of amazing recommendations! Haven’t managed to snag that Fright Night release yet; just too nervous Amazon would mess it up. Hoping they come out with a non-SteelBook version, even though that SteelBook does look gorgeous. Really looking forward to 2023, with a bunch of titles already topping my most anticipated list. Perhaps you two have some of your most hotly anticipated releases to share in a forthcoming video for the New Year? My top 5 of the year, in no particular order: Drive - Second Sight 4K limited edition Dog Soldiers - Second Sight 4K limited edition (box art awesome, stacked set) Ghostwatch - 101 films limited edition (BBC mock documentary) The Proposition - BFI 4K limited edition (the Australian Guy Pearce western - great looking set, looks phenomenal in 4K) Titans of Cult Matrix 4K steelbook - TOC can be a bit gimmicky but the Matrix steelbook looks awesome
I was very nervous about dog soldiers at first but it ended up looking real good. The ending is kinda meh. They didn’t really set it up well imo but I love me some Sean pertwe. I have that proposition too. The bfi releases are great. Pissed watership down got cancelled.

Dunston Checks In is to chimp cinema what Unforgiven was to westerns. It went against the odds and proved their was still an audience for great chimp thespians, but it unfortunately still dried up around Congo. Great choice!

Army of Darkness was a great release, I think if both of us haven't purchased and repurchased Evil Dead 1, 2 & Army on VHS, DVD, Blu, in multiple editions over the years it would have ranked higher. Stellar release though and definitely worthy of a top 5, especially the steelbook.
Got the Drive limited edition and the Indiana Jones steelbooks (and also chose to forget Crystal Skull exists…). Have been tempted by Videodrome as I’ve heard great things, big fan of Cronenberg but never seen it
I'll say this about Videodrome if it helps, I saw it for the first time 4-5 years ago and Matt just watched when the 4K released. So there's no nostalgia involved in our thoughts, if that makes sense... It plays fantastic today, maybe even more relevant than it was when released. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you like Cronenberg.
UPDATE: took a punt on the Videodrome Arrow 4k limited edition (debbie harry cover version). It was gross, shocking, repulsive, and I spent a large portion of the run time with no clue what was going on. Absolutely loved it
Great choice, not only one of my favorite releases, but one of my favorite films I watched last year. The rewatch value is endless. Long Live the New Flesh.
Hes got the 20 years old snapcase wb dvd of malcolm x….. hold my beer… I own the wb laserdisc double disc release that I love so much yat grainy and hazy at times…..

So far my favorite has been The Lost Boys. I was blown away by the transfer given the age of the movie, and I know the movie inside and out.

I ended up getting the Arrow UK of both Phenomena and Tenebrae but I regret not getting the synapse versions.

Good list - I have 7 of the films on your list. The only major omission is Turbine’s 6 disc set of The frighteners.

Coraline in 4K is eye melting in detail. It’s a top five, out of all 4K’s, to show off the quality of the format.
