    In 2010 / 2011 Gibson released a Buckethead Signature model and a Studio version. These were both Gibson USA guitars, but how do they differ? It essentially boils down to the type of finish used, aesthetic choices as well as neck profile to decide which one is best for you. On top of that, price is a huge consideration. The used value on these guitars is crazy. Studios will range from $2000-$3500 depending on condition and the true signatures will run from $4000-$7000 (again depending on condition and market availability.)
    This video will show you the differences between these two rare models as well as give you a sound / tone comparison between them.

I'm sure they can be used to do some pretty cool stuff. I have used the toggle switch trick before for sure, but not enough to constitute needing a button. What happens if you play a chord above the 12th fret and press them both at the same time? Just kidding... I love the videos, and thanks for making them Trogly.

  • @Riverdeepnwide
    @Riverdeepnwide 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Austin, cool observation on the neck widths.
    In terms most guitarists will understand that .030" difference in neck width is between the thicknesses of the A and D strings.
    It doesn't seem as if so slight a difference would matter but we do feel it and it testifies to the knowledge and skill of luthiers and production personnel in coming up with all these various neck carves to suit many styles and preferences of playing.
    Of course, on our own learning curves we can become fond of several designs.
    And if you ever think of taking sandpaper to your guitar neck, think twice, talk to some pros, and if you decide to proceed on your own please do so with great caution. Your hands can feel what your visual perception may miss.

    I've never really cared for these Buckethead guitars until watching you obsess over them and now they've kind of grown on me. I figured out what I don't like and it's the red pinball switches. If they were white and didn't stand out so much I'd probably like to own one as their rapid tapping on/off purpose is a really useful effect.

    Trying not to get psychologically tricked due to the looks of the signature model, the sig model did sound a tad bit warmer, especially with the neck pup on the clean test. Satin finishes are more challenging to keep wiped down/clean vs the nitro finishes. I had an ES Les Paul Custom with the 'VOS' gloss finish & it was difficult to wipe off sweat & skin oils. Putting that baked maple on the neck was a bad idea by Gibson. It does clash with the body. Overall, even though the nitro would turn after time, I'd go with the sig model due the binding, darker neck & nitro finish...Great demo, Trog!

    I’ve had the nut width conversation about Fenders. I don’t like the 1-5/8” that’s 1.625 but I’m okay with the 1.650 and it’s a big difference to me. I prefer a 1.75 but they’re not easy to find. I’d love to have a signature BH, my sound is different so it’d probably end up with Dimarzio PAFs but I’d love a baritone scale LP.

  • @maxwellwinter2114

    Why did they stop making his guitars? Why not a reissue or re-run of these guitars? All of them sold and they were very popular. Its been literally 10 years since the Signature came out! Every other artist has had multiple gibsons and epiphpone signatures over the year. Does Buckethead not want to make another guitar? I kinda have the feeling hes gonna do something soon becuase its been so long and he's gonna be doing the tour and lots of collabs with videogames and artists in 2019.

    • @Trog

      @@Trog Yeah i think so too. He really beat up his studios over the 16,17,and 18 tour. Then he got a new one near the middle-end of the tour. Or he used his back up because his main one wasnt staying in tune anymore cause it was used so much. And he didnt have time to fix it.

    • @Trog
      @Trog  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "richlite" is the term you're looking for. I've yet to personally see a true richlite version - most of these are ebony. I'm sure only VERY late ones have richlite and some buyers might stick their nose up at them, but the market is so hot for this guitar right now, I don't think it'd matter

    You mentioned nitro finishes are vulnerable to yellowing. Is this the same for poly finishes? Because I have a white Chibson that I've noticed has started to fade. Not to the point of the one in this video, but definitely noticeable. Is there a chance it's got a nitro finish?

    • @john564holloway
      @john564holloway 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      According to Trog, Poly finishes do last much longer than the Nitro in that being it doesn't fade & it won't get damaged due to a wall hanger.

    • @Trog
      @Trog  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The yellowing happens due to the clear coat aging - not the finish itself. I have limited experience with poly-based guitars but have always been told they will hold their color much better

    I guess it would ultimately come down to one thing - the size of your bank account and how how much you can afford to give away of it.
    I didn't hear you say the price of each model (new) , if we are only talking a couple of hundred bucks go with the true signature. If it's more than say $400, go with the studio. Again though it comes back to your wallet size - a $1,000 difference might not have that much impact on someone with a large wallet. My personal preference would probably be the true signature simply because of the ebony neck. The body binding is nice as well. However, I would really have to sit back and think about the yellowing. If a few years that pretty white guitar will be more cream color - will you like it then?

      Ben Logan I used to own a studio model as well but I had to give it up because of payments on bills. Also it’s neck was broken when I first got it and after three breaks I gave it up. The nicest thing about it is it had probably the best neck out of all the guitars I own. There wasn’t much lacquer on the neck, it actually had more of a wooden feel to it and it was easier to glide around the neck.

      @@MrTurtleywasted I essentially emailed the petition link and offered them a partnership in promoting their new products. They turned down my partnership offer very rudely saying they are 'very aware' of my show. Gibson doesn't like me because I once aired a phone call I had with them when they handed out false information. I did this to illustrate the point that Gibson does not have records of guitars before 1989 and without sending them photos of your guitar, it is impossible to know exactly what you have based on serial number since the historic type numbers do repeat and can mean different things. My intentions were to help them out, not 'shame' them. They tried getting that video taken down, but TH-cam sided with me. I cut that portion of the video out for them anyways. In the email they accused me of 'editing' the conversation, which I didn't (besides cutting wait times out!)
      So, they basically just ignored the buckethead thing. But with only a little over 1,000 signatures, I guess you can't blame them. I was hoping for something more like 10,000 to get their attention.

      @@Trog I did tried to check Gibson website that usually have all the guitar spec and comment from buyer but they no longer run that website that's kinda lame, tbh we expect at least some good support when we spent our hard earn cash of their guitar, really sad story indeed.
      With Their current website you cannot find any spec or information apart from 2018- 2019 which very disappoint with them. BTW Trogly thank you for the comparing video, if BH guitar is quite untouchable I might considering full mod my LP & SG Goth to BH Spec. If you had any Goth series please make some video of it, I really dig this series, early 1999-2000 I believe Gibson have a beef with government regarding to Ebony fret board.

      He prefers the finish on the Studios because he plays with long sleeves mostly & his sweaty side palm doesn't skid across the Standard Signature's finish. And although B owns a bunch of these, he only plays ONE... at least as much as he can. Just a lil info, hope that helped. 🤘🙂👍

    It's weird but I never really liked these tbh. They always seemed a bit gimmicky & kinda toy-ish to me, plus I don't dig ceramics much but I gotta admit they have grown on me over the years. Still don't think I'd ever get one though, although I imagine the killswitches would be fairly entertaining......for about a day.

    I am not a hero-worshipping signature model fanboy, so I would not buy any signature model (for any "great" guitarist that the guitar community celebrates) in most circumstances, but it sure would be nice to have a Les Paul with the kill switches for the sounds they offer. But there is one problem with these things -- I don't understand why Gibson cannot make these in a normal fucking string length. Buckethead is a GIANT. Can't Gibson fucking make a guitar for people who are small?
