Hi Jay, the coral is known as "The Scales". Long horn cattle also graze the highlands. There is a round up once a year. The coral is also used as a camping area. I do a horse back trail ride up once or twice a year. 🦋❤

This has to be your perfect day. 500 mile mark , the ponies , great weather and scenery. But most of all don't forget the ice cream in the middle of the wilderness. Well , OK , almost ice cream but only at a distance and for years to come , one blaze at a time.

enjoying your videos. just caught on at the start of this trip so it’s the first time i’m watching anyone do a thru hike in “real time.” probably the best at thru hike videos i’ve seen thus far (shh, don’t tell the other ones!) i’m up in ny about 60 miles from nyc with many at access points nearby so you’ll be in my area prob around june or so i’ guesstimating. am glad you got to see the ponies. i just went there in december first time. i hiked in from a parking area up to near mt rogers and then back. i didn’t see a pony all day and was somewhat disappointed. but as i made my way back i saw them. not a lot of them but they were there! i hope to go back.
We have been following your journey this year. In the past we typically pick one or two to follow. This year we locked in on your journey. thank you for the wonderful pictures. We are still catching up some and have viewed up to day 56.
The bird was perfect! I'd say 90% of the time I see a bird it gets between the sun and me so I can't really photograph it. This guy was next to me and didn't fly away while I fumbled the camera out and sat down from the sun. I got lucky! Today I saw a bird in a good position and when I aimed the camera at it and zoomed in I just saw branches. Fast little guys!

My favorite pony was the white one at the beginning. Last night 3/30 we had really high winds in TN and my hawks lost their nest. Sad day, have been watching them for many years, and now they are gone.

This first stretch was a spectacular landscape, love the gnarly roots, rocks and all the greenery! That bird really behaved for me. I had to manually focus as well due to all the branches in the way. I loved hearing the other bird sing and watching this one respond. Pretty sweet moment.

Normally I apply noise reduction but reduced it for that eating sound and ramped up the volume. I've never heard that before so I was happy to catch it.

I've been showing my kids some of your videos, and they've enjoyed them. This one was universally approved. My 2 yo daughter was really thrilled to see the ponies and claimed several of them for herself. Thanks for taking us on this journey!
I'm glad you can share them with your kids. I always wanted to keep them all family friendly so children can watch then spark that urge to get out into the mountains someday.

Hi Jay - beautiful video tonight. Loved the ponies! I noticed you showing the mountain views and the smokiness. That particular fire burned for several days in the Smokies on the north Carolina side. Unfortunately, that fire and another here in East Tennessee took off yesterday when the super-high winds started up. As of today, over 3700 acres have burned up along with at least 100 homes in the past 24 hrs . Yesterday, they even evacuated parts of Gatlinburg! So glad you are well past this area!
There are many pony herds at the Highlands…as many as 15 or so….and they range in and just out of the park boundaries. The population is usually between 100 and 150 w the herds being rounded up for inspection and culling of the males every fall. I love their fat little bellies! Beautiful “ending credits” today!

So far I would say the PCT almost overwhelms you with constant amazing views. On the AT you get it every now and then so you really really appreciate them when they come. Overall though this trail has a lot of unique features to keep it enjoyable.

What a beautiful section of the trail. The ponies were definitely a highlight. Your audio is so clear. Are you just using the audio from your GoPro? Stay safe, and thanks for sharing your hike.
For the GoPro shots, yes. I turn wind reduction off and I think it makes the audio much better. For the Sony shots I use a Sony stereo microphone on top of the camera. The audio has a more natural sound due to the stereo sound.
Cool horses, nice music. Last year i watched 4 guys hanging around the horses, and one guy got behind one horse and the horse kicked him where it counts,He was shocked over that. Blackritz

The Scales is also used for grazing cattle. We saw longhorns when we hiked there.

That's a shame. It's amazing how nests hold up to those winds but I guess sometimes it's just too much. Hopefully more show up.

I was up there last October and it was extremely crowded. People everywhere but still very cool place.
