I love how you take the time to share all the little nuances of this hike. We get to see the major attractions and the more mundane which can be just as amazing. Thanks you for the incredible amount of work this must take on top of hiking!

    Jay,
Long time watcher first time commenter. I have to say this is my favorite video so far. Love that you are taking spontaneous unplanned side adventures and throwing some caution to the wind on how to get there. To me, the essence of a real adventure is taking time to smell the roses and enjoy the ride. Keep on smiling my friend.

On your PCT hike, you met someone and wanted to help them with their TH-cam channel, and I thought, what a nice guy.
Now, a couple years later, you want to help another, and I thought, the world needs more people like this guy.
Thanks Jay.. The world appreciates you.

Bamboo grows like weed, if you start to grow one it will sprout all over the place in a short time... aaand it's difficult to get rid of it again lol The small white blossoming tree/shrub is called in Latin "Spiraea thunbergii" and the flowers smell all sweet-ish, they bloom from March till May if they don't get frost anymore and all the early Butterflies and Bees love this first meal of the season! I love homemade lemonade with honey, so so good! If I would have a farm, Alpaca would be my animal of choice and Chickens lol (dreaming on) What a great music choice again, you nail it all the time! Thanks for all the hard work you do for us, it feels like walking with a Friend i never met!

Hey Jay! Oh yea, 25F is a bit chilly for shorts 🥶 those rhododendron leaves looked like Pirouoine for sure! Nice how close the water source was to that shelter. Beautiful shelter as well. Nice of you to modify your stopping spot to help out PHD. FYI, youtube is giving me this video at 1080p, 24fps, 13.08Mbit, using vp9. Switching to avc drops it to 9.69Mbit. Those looked like 230kv towers. Each different type of transmission tower can carry different voltage. Those would totally light up a fluorescent bulb. That was some epic trail magic at the school house, huge thanks to the angels that left it. It is so awesome to see spring actually happening. I am so excited for spring to hit up here. Thank you so much for the shots of the alpaca. They are such fascinating and beautiful creatures. Kudos on the stellar stills today. And music! You really killed it with todays video! 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well.

I’m always so happy when two TH-camrs I follow meet. You three are my fav. With the music choice I felt the alpacas were on a grand adventure. I laughed at loud when you showed excitement at the dog treats in the schoolhouse, “like a dog”. Great video!

Like the “little school house on the prairie”. I had finger tipless gloves of Alpaca that I got in Peru once, they were fantastic for photography. unfortunately the dog thought they were great also. I wonder if a guy were to film with a 32-64ND in order to get 24 fps at 50th of a second, if on the pans during video, when you up load at 10 bit, will TH-cam end up mushing out on the bushes and twigs on play back. I hate that after all the effort we put into them. Or maybe my data rate receiving is not the greatest. glad you tried to help your new friend out ( forgot name while posting ). He reminds me of a tall Smurf with his shades on :).

Your videos are always "Jay's exceptional standards ". They are an ( discovery ) expedition while still hiking a trail. That stand of Bamboo took me back to my childhood in the early 50's. Dad had a large stand of Bamboo and the neighborhood kids ( myself included ) would cut a small one as a ( cane poll ) fishing rod. The really large ones we would clime up and near the top it would bend and lower us back down to the ground.

Nice day today….that school house was closed when I passed it, so all I could do was look thru the window…thanks for including the history of it…now I know what I was looking at. I always meant to look it up, but it fell thru the cracks. You’re getting into the long bumpy stretch that makes up VA. Some good things ahead! Including some nice opportunities for hot food right off the trail. It’s almost like Jersey & Connecticut with the deli-a-day stretch.

13:58 Arundinaria gigantea , Giant Cane, River Cane, Switch Cane, American Bamboo... When its numbers were huge, it often seeded out all at once, making what they cane breaks and this invited great flocks of birds to partake of the feast. Humans, too, utilized the plant for basketry and home construction. Today, it is limited to occasional patches, as it was cleared away with European invasion from the 16th to 19th centuries......15:02 could be wild blueberry bushes.

Your white flower tree sure looks to be a Bradford Pear which while beautiful and an early bloomer, they also stink and are an invasive species in the southeast US. There have been some efforts lately to get people in this area to cut them down and plant new local trees instead. Glad to see you enjoying yourself and taking time to stop to learn about the area and to smell the flowers (seriously don't smell those white ones).

Voltages on those types of grid lines are typically 125,000 to 250,000 volts. I've seen reports it can be as high as 745,000V but have never seen those personally. I have some stories about people who did stupid stuff around those power lines but I won't give anyone ideas here. Let's just say there are some young folks lucky to be alive. That was great you were able to help Hot Dog.

Pick up truck ride was hysterical to the Alpaca farm. The green Rhodie tunnels are so beautiful. The Old School House was awesome. Don't need much room to teach reading, writing, spelling, and math. Spring is showing signs of emerging, it will explode on you shortly.

So I have been following your AT hike from the beginning because I am hoping to be a 2024 AT thru hiker and I enjoy your videos. I am also planning to do a section of PCT in about three weeks, from Cabazon to Agua Dulce. So today, I went back and watched your videos from those sections of the PCT. You had quite an injury to your knee during that section. Anyway, you went through that area in the same amount of days I was planning so it was good to see that my planned amount of days should work out. Really enjoying your videos and that of Pink hot dog and mushroom.

Are you testing indoors? I have the 10 and they work best in bright light especially outside. Their stabilization requires brighter light as well to work better. I just use 4k 24fps hevc at standard quality, to keep the file sizes reasonable. Is the raw file not as good a quality? Oh yeah, I also use linear with horizon leveling and High for stabilization. Standard picture profile as well.

Pear tree invasive? Does it grow fruit? Spice bush! I just read today that sometimes morel mushrooms like to grow under them... I'll keep an eye out next time.

    • @wanttogo1958
      @wanttogo1958 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, Bradford Pear trees are considered an invasive species. The fruit aren't edible by humans. They're very small but birds like them and then spread the seed that results in the trees showing up in all the places you don't want them like wooded thickets and fence rows. They are a bigger nuisance than Wild Cherry, Hackberry and Mulberry, all trees spread by birds eating their fruit and then excreting them wherever they land or fly.

Yeah you made it to the alpaca farm, I remember those guys, have they completed the bunk room for the hostel? I love the setler school house, the caretaker told me that they do allow you to camp inside the school house if you get permission, don't know if that still is the case? Were you able to see the 19th century white farmhouse off a side trail prior to the school house, that was a real cool place to hang out? Anyways I was wondering what kind of rain pants are u using?

A bit of context on the "$30 a month". In 1894, the US was still under the gold standard where twenty dollars could be redeemed for one ounce of gold. In other words, that teacher was earning about $2925 per month with today's gold price.
The remaining question is "What did the average rural Virginia teacher do the other seven months of the year?"

The white blossom trees l think we're cherry and the trees at the school looked like maybe apple. Don't insult the alpacas by telling them their mother was a lama.
