as a GC8 WRX owner im stoked to see more people getting into these cars recently. The EJ20 is a solid motor that love's to rev. One difference you will notice going to the EJ20 is that it doesn't throw you back in your seat and then fall off up top, the EJ20 is the other way around where it builds boost a little bit later in the RPM range and but from there it just keeps pulling whereas the EJ25 runs out of steam. P.s id go for the version 6 STI wing over the 22b wing only reason i say this is because the 22b is wider than the WRX/STI so naturally they made the wing wider to suit the proportions of the 22b, on a GC8 STI or WRX it looks slightly off. The version 6 STI wing looks a bit better anyway imo

he will be needing seat covers soon though lol i have those exact seats and the bolstering on the drivers side eventually tears on that one side from getting in and out. You can see in the pic its already starting to wear out
Excited to see this and what you do to it. I have this same engine swapped into my ‘74 Beetle with stock harness and computer. Being JDM and non-AVCS makes these a bit different than the first USDM EJ20 turbos!

Awesome, I daily a 97 wrx here in Japan. You’re lucky yours came with the STI tail lights. The front bumper you’re talking about came on the ver5-6 GC8s, year 1999 and forward it’s definitely a better looking and more aggressive bumper. Can’t wait to see the build!

cop a IAG closed deck block, depending on how much power you want, and a 07 STI trans with the carbon syncros. Then you won’t have any overheating or ringland problems
That’s the wrx that got a facelift. Pre-‘96 the IC is slanted and it doesn’t come with ABS. Also the bumper, hood, and side skirts, and tail lights are a bit different. Relatively simple problem to look for is replacing the PCV along with all of its hoses, including intake and turbo hoses. People never changed the PCV and they clog up so you’ll get some oil leaking from both the intake and PCV hoses, plus they get extremely brittle over time.I am not exactly sure if the 96 power steering pump is the same as the pre-face lift but the power steering pumps are absolutely crap so replace it with a newer one. Besides that, everything else is pretty solid and would require just your basic maintenance.
Just thought I would give you a heads up if you don’t already know, most EJ20’s life span are about 280,000 km’s. But knowing you, easy enough to rebuild that bad boy! Over the moon that you will be making content on my favourite car since I was a little boy

You know i never use to like subbies but at my old work we went to test drive the 2006 subaru before it got released in south africa(we use to drink to much so they made this our xmas party 😁) and i fell in love.The response,the power.Man all of it are just so satisfying.To get a subbie + an R34 is like finding gold coins at the end of a rainbow.When we use to race.There was this stock looking B22 and man i love to stock look but it made huge power.Funny thing is it was road ready.There was this beach buggy that dominate everything.Till the subbie pulled up and humiliated it.

That should have a late ej20g. The heads are great but the bottom end's are a bit weak. A rod bearing failure is not uncommon. With that being a manual sedan wrx it will have the TD05h turbo which is significantly better than the tiny td04 found on the wagons and automatics. That is a super cool car though and I'm excited to see what you do with it!

I have a 97 GC8 out here in japan and honestly the FUNNEST car. Rear seals and make sure keeps oil . Will spin a bearing no problem haha

GC8s are DOPE and i think it's a nice fit for you because they are generally more reliable than the generation you had.

350hp on a GC8 chassis is damn near perfect. Keeps it Fun, but not overkill.
FYI. Upto 1996, Subaru used the Ej20G in their wrx’s. That’s an original closed deck engine 👌🏼
