I think a large part of what makes songs like this great is the fact that they aren't overburdened with meaning. Sometimes a song is just an awesome song. Doesn't have to mean a whole lot. He took his feelings and he translated them into music. Simple as that. Most the time when people argue over what this or that song is really about, it's all speculation. Then, whenever someone asks if a particular story they heard about the song is true, you get people like Kurt Cobain saying "yep that's it, now I remember". Truth be told Kurt didn't put much thought into song meanings. I think most grunge era bands are like that. Which is what makes it stand out. Grunge is basically if "f**k it" was a musical genre. What it lacked in meaning, it made up for with the way it impacted you. When you listen to a song like Black Hole Sun, you get to decide what it means personally to you. It's a gift and you get to do whatever you want with it. To one person it reminds them of a terrible day spent in traffic. To another person it just reminds them how small we really are in the great vast universe. The possibilities are endless.
