  • Elle here - sharing some tips on how to identify vintage Levi's.
These are a few quick and easy tips, but there's a wealth of information on the interwebs to help you navigate the world of vintage Levi's even deeper.
*Additional notes: A selvedge seam is an inside seam of the pant leg this is located on the outer part of the leg seam. The inseam (running down the inner part of leg) on almost all Levi's made before the mid 80's had a single stitch only, so yet another indicator that you have a vintage pair in hand.

I have been collecting vintage Levis, especially 501s, for decades. This is my dating method, but it does not involve care tags which can easily be cut off. The key is the waist patch, which must be present. If it says "Made in U.S.A." then they are vintage jeans, if it doesn't they are not. If on the waist tag the jeans number (like 501) is followed by a trademark sign (R in a circle), then it is not vintage. So you do have pair of 501s that says made in the USA, then check to see if they have redline outseams, if so then they were made before 1983. It they are redlines, then check the back pocket red tab, if it has a capital E rather than a lowercase e, then it is from before the early 1970s. But some 501s had lowercase es in the late 1960s. Check the stitching on the inside of the back pocket, if it is single stitched then it is also from before the early 1970s. Vintage jeans with redline outseams, capital E tabs, and single stitched back pockets are measurably older and worth significantly more.
Regarding vintage orange tab Levis jeans. They were Levis lower tier jeans and cost less than red tab jeans. Levis stopped using orange tabs in the early 1990s, so all orange tabs are vintage. Today Levis lower tier jeans are called "Signature" and sold through Walmart.

@@audrawilkens6640 Back around 1970 we were all wearing bell bottom Levis and my mom recommended I buy a pair of 501 shrink-to-fits. They fit me so well and wore and faded great so I became a fan - until Levis started using poor quality cotton and ruined the fit, which happened after they moved production overseas in 2000.
Having studied 501s for decades, I believe the 501 STFs made from 1994 to 1999 are the best ever. In the mid 1990s I walked into the former Sears at the former Westminster Mall in Denver and saw a huge wall of 501 STF jeans priced at $21/pair, but you were limited to 6 pairs per purchase. So periodically I would visit the mall and buy six pairs leading to a lifetime supply. While I have many dozens of 501 jeans, I haven't bought jeans from a store in twenty years. I didn't know that 501s would become poor fitting, super thin, and sandpaper rough, but I figured they couldn't get any better and would never be as cheap.
Then ebay showed up in the late 1990s and at first prices were really low, so I got a lot of nice pre-1990 and redline 501s too.

Thanks for sharing this valuable info. i have a pair of Levis that look older and they have smiley faces on the front of the legs but they were made in Japan and all the writing is in Japanese so i have no idea how to figure out what i have. they have a total 70s style but i know that doesn't mean anything as far as dating them. I have held on to them for a few years because i had no idea how or where to sell them. my aunt gave them to me and she owned them for several years and bought them at a garage sale. I'm pretty sure between the two of us we have owned them at least into the early 90s.

I find it fascinating that everyone goes to the Made in the USA as whether or not it is a vintage pair of jeans. I personally bought mine in the mid eighties and they are a pair of 505 women's jeans. The care tag says made in Mexico. So just because it does not say Made in the USA, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's not vintage.

Just like everything else that's new to a person there is a learning curve. It took me awhile to figure out what selvage was even though other pickers were trying to explain it to me. That was over 20 years ago. Until I actually saw selvage I really didn't know what they meant. The red line was easy to spot, and the big E even easier, but the little things I had no clue. Now it's all pretty easy for me. I found a pair of Double X hidden rivet big E's around that time but didn't know about the hidden rivet part. Thankfully one of my picking buddies shared that knowledge with me. He offered me $300.00 on the spot so it wasn't like he was trying to rip me off. But the fact he shared that knowledge with me allowed me to sell them for $600.00 on ebay. That was back when people still kept their trade secrets secret, and youtube wasn't telling everyone yet.

I definitely agree 💯 percent with you. So these people making videos are not giving out the right information. I personally have my father's jeans that are 501s bought in the 80's that are made in Mexico and even Levi's brand says they made Jeans all over the place. So that care tag thing is completely wrong! I also have a very old pair with no label on the but but a lil symbol. Levi did this on purpose to show that not only do they own the rights to the name Levi but also the red tab. These are real authentic Levi's made in Mexico as well and there definitely vintage. People need to stop giving out the wrong information on Levi's and do more research

    • @drwisdom1
      @drwisdom1 ปีที่แล้ว

@@monstergamingbatmanarkumkn9355 I have been wearing Levi's 501s since the late 1960s and have a huge vintage collection. I never saw a pair of 501s that were made in Mexico until the year 2000. Levi's did have overseas production before 2000 but they were for sale outside of the US. Back then the Levi's sold in the US were made in the US. I would have to see your 1980s 501s to believe they were made in Mexico, from the 1980s, and authentic.

Im a Levis vintage collector. If you want them and save money, go to the Thrift Stores but you have to be patient. Made in USA should be written at the waist tag. Dont go to Levi’s store as they cost almost $300. Stitching and materials are incomparable. Good luck hunting!

I have tons of 501 bought in the 90's and they were made in a lot of different places like UK, Belgium, Turkey and also USA. If your jeans are not made only of cotton they're not vintage for sure, i stopped buying them when i got a pair in 2012 that were made of cotton and polyester.

Levi's started licensing foreign plants to make levi's in the mid 60s so it is wrong to immediately dismiss anything made outside the U.S. as not vintage, all the more assuming they are made after 2002.

They were very pricey I think 168$. When I got them today they looked old etc. This was my 2nd pair bc I returned 1 last week that didn't fit n they were selling out fast online. They are bell bottoms never been worn. they have no leather tag, but they have the original tag with size , style and also it seems to be dated 7/77. Also they were made in Canada. The other pair are GWG Scrubbies , not sure if you can tell me anything about these, they are also original bell bottoms.

Inseams were single felled for older Levi’s (meant to say that!) and yes, the selvedge is technically the outer inside seam.

It says made in USA on the cardboard tag. This tag also has a piece that is perforated with numbers that I've never seen. But more interesting, I found a pair of 501 with a leather patch and leather tab. I have yet to find any info on this pair. Was wondering if you have ever heard of such a thing. Great statistics - you'll have to let us know about the unsure pair after you research them. I graduated in "84 and LUV vintage jeans. When the jeans started to change in the 90s, I just went thrifting and continued to wear 100% cotton denim. I cannot find vintage Levi's that fit now (in my thrift store), so currently I am wearing Ralph Lauren vintage 100% cotton denim. I'm not very curvy.. I know these will fit great without even trying them on. I sold a pair of vintage Levi's last year on eBay (that were too big for me) and they went to Japan thru GSP.

Do vintage Levi jeans ever not have where they were made on the care tag? There is a seller on Etsy selling “vintage 501 cutoff shorts” but the care tags don’t have where they were made on them

Care tags do not tell you if your Levi's are vintage or not. I have many Levi's , from Mexico and there from the 80's because my dad wore them in the 80s. Therefore you cannot go by the care tag only

I have a few pairs of 550 that were made in Mexico in 1996..that was when they first started making them outside the US and right around NAFTA. Just because they were made in Mexico does NOT mean they're not vintage. Just need to make that clear.

I have been collecting levis since the 60,s. There is a lot of levis that i would say are not vintage being sold on ebay etc, so beware.
there are Capital E levis that are not vintage aswell as small e. also the selvage edge jeans should show a red stich line down the edge. real vintage selvage denim use to be know ( Hairy denim made in cone mill ) a heavyier weight denim material that was died in true indigo dye. This denim would bleed dye for about 5=10 washes. the dyeing of the material changed just before levis stopped making them in USA.

I’ve got Levi’s from as far back as 1980. 6 pairs of 501 jeans that are made in USA, both men’s and women’s, and a few other styles that are also old. Unfortunately, over the years, I cut a lot of them into shorts, and eventually got rid of them, got to the point where I was too old for the daisy duke look. What I have no longer fit me, and to be honest, as much as I liked 501s, they never really looked that great on me...so some of mine are in mint condition, because I didn’t wear them all that much. One of these days I’ll get around to putting them on eBay.

I had a pair of 501's way back that I wore so much (because I had no money for clothes). Loved them but I blew a hole in the back pocket from keeping coins in there. I seldom washed it and it would get pretty nasty - smelled like an ashtray.
