The Black Holes are hands up the best practice solution out there. I use mine with L80s and the EAD10 (added gain) and it honestly feels and sounds like you're playing on an acoustic kit in a studio environment but with lower volume.
do you use triggers in the black holes with the ead10 ? I was thinking to do the same but i was worries about the sound quality and if ead would pick the sound/tone
This quiet practice set blows my mind
Black holes or Aquarian’s super pads are the go to. The ease and simplicity of just popping them on and off are what makes them the go to way to switch from quiet set to full volume in seconds
Super Pads are my favorite. Been trying to get more but they've been out of stock for 6+ months now.
@@armansenson2864 straight up dude, anyone know when theyre gonna get more of the 20" superpads? ive been wanting to snag one since february lol
Black holes sounds more loud great for reduce loud acustic drum sound , but I would use mesh heads for triggers , works perfect for that..Greetings from Mexico.
Great video, Adam! I also vote for the Black Holes. They keep more tone & are about 1,000 times easier to use.
I just about died laughing at 0:35. The chill nonchalant comment. 😂
Duuuude!!!! Sold on the Black hole drum mutes. Slip it over in seconds??? Focus point... Black holes for the win. I need these. 💯
A big thing for me is price since I’m in college, the mesh heads are a great option cause you can get a decent set for 80-100 where as the black heads are crazy expensive
I have the Black Holes and love them - great feel
I dig these a lot. Best solution for me. Great video.
Ya, I love the ones that slip over the rims, huge time saver. Plus, I only have to tune them once, instead of every time I want my set back Lol
I ended up buying a cheap shell pack, put evans db1 heads on and zildjians low volume cymbals. Its the way to go if you have the means and space for two kits.
Really helpful, and great sound! Thanks 😊
Very helpful video on a great product that fills a need. Thanks for doing it.
Excellent review! The volume comparison is key. How much higher is the Black Hole (rim) on the drum? Did you need to adjust the heights/angles of the drums and/or your throne to accommodate them?
Nice!! Which one has the better feel? Also, would love to see a review of the Meinl low volume cymbals! Haven't seen any out there yet.
could the LV mesh heads be used to convert an acoustic set into an electronic one? use LV mesh heads, remove the reso heads fromt he drums and add a trigger to each drum and you basically have an electronic set (assuming you already have the module)
Mkay when I'm out of my shoe box flat I'm gonna get some of these
The tone and volume reduction on the Black Holes is amazing. I just wish it could give better side stick action.
You still can get a solid rim shot.
How do you record with this quality using only one microphone? Is it possible to achieve a good recording without a mixer and only a USB microphone?
You need 5 things to make a decent drum recording with 1 mic. A mic with a wide polar pattern, good mic placement, an interface, a well tuned drum set, and a decent sounding room.
The better EACH of those things get, the better the recording. It’s a giant recipe, and every ingredient matters.
Do not use USB mics if you’re seeking higher quality. They’re designed for convenience; not sound quality.
This link has several hours of my audio Masterclasses that breaks down all the gear needed to get started recording drums properly in a studio setting:

Owning both Acoustic and electric is the best solution though i wouldn't recommend electric for beginners looking to actually learn to play
Vote for you, great, my friend
Clear g2 resonant? Right? Isn't G1? Interesting
Im moving into a middle unit town home…. are these as good as theyre made to seem? will I piss off my new neighbours? Asking someone who has used them.
Did you try out the trusound heads?
You didn’t give much feedback / opinion about the Meinl low volume cymbals. From what I could tell, they sounded almost exactly like the Zildjian L80s. Same price, but with a 20” ride instead of an 18” ride.
Because I’m not reviewing those cymbals. Lol. Another topic for another video.
Is there a review video on the Meinl Cymbals HCS Practice Cymbal?
I just wish the black holes weren't so damned expensive
I have one low volume head on one of my snares
I love it, but still too pricey to convert my whole practice kit
that pedal with that extender thing added to it will slip of the bassdrums when you play or even use double pedal hammer... Im sure ...I guess..I think. I guess if they were clever they could have made a hole in the bottom of the rtom so you can clamp fasten your pedal as on the analogue kit... So I dont understand that added bassdrum pedal metal thing is just slipped under the bassdrum like that ..that would simply slide off to right or left if using the pedal wildly as in double hammer etc ??
What about the rebound of the Mesh? Guess it is as with conventional heads?...
Actually the rebound is closer to regular heads
Great review! I actually practice with mesh heads with triggers on the toms/kick and I close mic w/ effects a snare with mesh head and just bit of duck tape. The sound is decent and I don’t get false triggering. Do you think the Rtom would produce a better overall sound on the snare than what I’m doing? I’m yet to hear anyone actually completely mic up an Rtom with complete effects like a performance kit. Thanks!
So, I've got the Alesis Strata Prime kit and the module just recently crashed on me in 7 months, without even daily playing. I'm thinking of selling it and going with a setup like this, but I live in a town home. With this set up would you compare it to a similar volume level to playing on an ekit? It sounds similar but just trying to confirm by others who have been in a similar situation.
Great video nice drumming too I'm using the Evans dB-One's and On-Stage low-volume cymbals good combo.
Im going to the LV mesh heads. so sick of neighbors crying
im getting lots of double triggering on my trigger. what am i doing wrong? i tried the trigger settings at 1 minimum velocity curve, deleted the layers for one sound on the trigger, 2ms wait time, lower to medium gain, lots of silly double triggering and insane vibrations.
If you're at absolute minimum -- and assuming you haven't missed anything -- then you either need different triggers or a different module. Before you have a heart attack, get a mate to check you haven't missed anything, it could be fine (I think Gain is control for this on my DM-5, iirc). Otherwise, you might actually be able to get away with a module off an extremely cheap and generic e-kit. Most modules come with line-in ports, so you might even be able to combine sounds from the two modules to create something functional.
I'll be honest, the quiet factor on those drums were way less than desirable. Especially the L.V. heads because you left the reso heads on.
But he clearly still wanted some tone and feel and isn’t doing it to be super quiet. The Evan’s DB one are pretty dope though.
The Black Holes are pratical but cost almost the price of the drums.

Silent👍🥁
Yupp, why have a mat so the kit dosent wander away. That some serious drumming...
Nice drum drum drum
I mean I guess if you take the same kit around to gig with, otherwise just play electronic.
Quaker Oats
Thats why they are all exes🤣
Awesome sounding practice kit! Have you tried other practice cymbals and how would you say these compare to them if you have? I was able to try Sabian Quiet Tones today and the hi-hat was way too loud in the high frequencies and kinda hurt my ears. I've heard that the L80s are quieter but based on the few videos I could find about these Meinls they might be even better! There just isn't much info about them online.
I use Sabian Quiet Tones and love them! I did get a few thick rubber bands and weave 1 through the holes on the edge of each cymbal, it really helped to cut that super high frequency out!
@@rainyjacktheepic Thanks for the tip! Do you have a video or sound clip anywhere of the difference? I already ordered the meinl hi-hat tho and it is very pleasant sounding, but I might wanna try something cheaper for a ride.
Not sure if you are still looking for feedback on this question since it was posed so long ago.
I’ve been a longtime Sabian user (essentially my full drumming career of nearly 30 years) and did a side-by-side comparison of the their QuietTone with the Zildjian L80s in my local drum shop several years back.
Had to go with the L80s. The tone was so much better. Sabian’s were higher-pitched/pingy whereas the L80s were closer to the dark sound I prefer. Also, FWIW, I employed the warranty on the Zildjian’s for multiple cymbals in the pack (the holes do make these a bit more prone to cracking) and it was zero-hassle. Sent them the cracked cymbal and they sent me a new one quickly.
Good for practice. But both the heads and the cymbals sound awful. Appreciate your video for this knowledge.

See you at GF!
BH are overpriced IMO. And the LV's sounded better, at least on this demo. I guess each one is for a specific audience.
I find it horrible to be honest x)
Cool comment.

Those cymbals sound like garbage. Like children's toys.
@@youngsterjoey9038 Good thing they’re practice tools and not real instruments. Right?
@@AdamTuminaro $300 on practice tools
@@youngsterjoey9038 I’ve spent thousands of dollars on practice tools; from instruments, to gym equipment, to online classes.
Some people take self-improvement seriously. You have no obligation to do the same thing, but complaining on the internet to strangers about tools you don’t own (or don’t want) is a weird way to spend your Monday.
