So Higglytown Heroes wasn't just some show where matryoshka dolls did some random stuff, the story behind each episode was there'd be a problem to solve, and then a hero would show up, showcasing different occupations and what they do, so the purpose of the show was to get kids to start thinking about the careers they want to do when they grow up. For these hero roles, they had a whole bunch of guest stars like Phil LaMarr (Samurai Jack, Wilt, and Earth King) as a lifeguard, Jeff Bennett (Johnny Bravo, Jacques von Hämsterviel, and Dexter & Dee Dee's dad) as an auctioneer, Raven-Symoné as a playground monitor, Joey Fatone as a bulldozer operator, Rob Paulsen as a barber, Serena Williams as a snowplow driver, etc! The ones that did the Higglytown Heroes theme song was They Might Be Giants who also worked on the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme song, the Malcolm in the Middle theme song, and a cover of There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow for Meet the Robinsons! Book of Pooh was the first to use Shadowmation developed by creator Mitchell Kriegman which was later used in the PBS series It's a Big Big World! Work for It's a Big Big World was done at a studio in the Hamptons on Long Island at an airport in Wainscott. Bear in the Big Blue House and Out of the Box were both filmed at the Kaufman Astoria Studios in NYC, the same place Sesame Street has been filmed since 1993! It's also the same place shows like Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego (which was another role Lynne Thigpen was known for as the ACME chief), Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego, seasons one through four of Between the Lions, Oobi, and The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss were all filmed! In Stanley, the voice of Dennis the fish is Charles Shaughnessy, better known as Mr. Sheffield in The Nanny, while Elsie the cat is Hynden Walch who's Princess Bubblegum and Starfire, and Lester (the one talking at 14:25) is Philece Sampler who voiced the elder version of Toph in Legend of Korra!

19:28 Higglytown Heroes would enlighten kids about various jobs adults had and how they contribute to society. Whenever there was a problem, they would be "saved" by the appropriate "hero": if there was an issue with food, they'd be helped by a chef. An issue involving swimming? They'd get help from a lifeguard. Zookeeper, mechanic, tailor, truck driver, operator, they wouldn't solely rely on the typical jobs you'd expect a child to already have an idea about in these kinds of programs. They'd even bring up more obscure jobs which is where the series shined IMO.
@Juvia_Lockser they're a real music group! and they're still active too, they're even performing at a festival i'm going to tomorrow because they're local to the area. pretty crazy to me
Conner, you have legitimately taken me back throughout my childhood. I was born in 2001, and I watched almost all of these shows religiously as a kid. So in a way, thank you so much for this video.
Slight correction according to Noel Macneal (the puppeteer and voice behind Bear from Bear in the big blue house) the real reason the show ended was because Disney felt the show had its run and they wrapped production before the unfortunate passing of Lynne Thigpen. I actually got the chance to meet Noel and he seemed like a really nice guy, and he talked about the infamous Bear and Big Bird picture.
Oh man. I had almost forgotten about Ze Fronk. I loved those shorts as a kid, but I couldn't remember what it was called. I saw most of these. I remember liking Rollie Pollie Ollie the most.
Yeah as you mentioned, the puppetry in The Book of Pooh is based on bunraku puppetry. Bunraku's history goes as far back as the 16th century, but the origins of its modern form can be traced to around the 1680s after the playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon began a collaboration with the chanter Takemoto Gidayu, who established the Takemoto puppet theater in Osaka in 1684. Three kinds of performers take part in a bunraku performance, the Ningyōtsukai or Ningyōzukai (puppeteers), the tayū (chanters), and shamisen musicians. The heads and hands of traditional puppets are carved by specialists, while the bodies and costumes are often constructed by puppeteers. The heads can be quite mechanically sophisticated. In plays with supernatural themes, a puppet may be constructed so that its face can quickly transform into that of a demon. Less complex heads may have eyes that move up and down, side to side or close, and noses, mouths, and eyebrows that move. Controls for all movements of parts of the head are located on a handle that extends down from the neck of the puppet and are reached by the main puppeteer inserting their left hand into the chest of the puppet through a hole in the back of the torso. The main puppeteer, the omozukai, uses their right hand to control the right hand of the puppet, and uses their left hand to control the puppet's head. The left puppeteer, known as the hidarizukai or sashizukai, depending on the tradition of the troupe, manipulates the left hand of the puppet with their own right hand by means of a control rod that extends back from the elbow of the puppet. A third puppeteer, the ashizukai, operates the feet and legs. All but the most minor characters require three puppeteers, who perform in full view of the audience, generally wearing black robes. Usually a single chanter recites all the characters' parts, altering his vocal pitch and style in order to portray the various characters in a scene. Occasionally multiple chanters are used. The chanters sit next to the shamisen player. Some traditional puppet theaters have a revolving platform for the chanter and shamisen player, which rotates to bring replacement musicians in for the next scene.
Just hearing some of these shows again just awakened some memories within me. A flashback to a simpler innoncent time in my life. Like every Gen Z kid, alot of these shows were my Jam growing up!
Ze Fronk was a fun one. When I was a kid I really wanted to make the dishes on that show and tried some good stuff like Ants on A Log, that was a nice after school snack. I used to quote the characters while my mom helped me make the food. Little me couldn't even come close to Mark Hamil and Rob Paulson. I liked those guys before I knew who they were.
This was a nice trip down memory lane. The Wiggles and Bear in the Big Blue House were two of the biggest things in my life as a little kid. The shows from Higgly Town Heroes onwards I watched a lot of as a kid too. I think with Stanley, PBJ Otter, JoJo Circus, Out of the Box, and Rollie Pollie Ollie I kinda remember (thanks to a Playhouse Disney cd and a Book of Pooh VHS) but I don’t remember actually watching the shows since I was too young to remember.
How young were because I certainly remember and playhouse Disney wasn’t around when I turned 7. I don’t remember at all, that channel name. But the shows I do remember fairly well watching them. I have actually rewatched some Charlie and Lola on TH-cam and realized I don’t really completely remember the episodes but know a little bit later it is coming back to me for some of them some not even though I know that with the ones I loved that I watched every single episode that was released.
PBS kids and Nick JR are still around you know. So is the kids Disney channel it’s just called DisneyJR now and I highly recommend that you check it out because it’s awesome.
I saw a lot of these not because I was that young in the early 2000s, but because I had younger siblings who would leave the Disney Channel on all the time. And I'm actually nostalgic for when those programming blocks for little kids used a variety of mediums rather than the same 3D computer animation style for everything!
Higglytown Heroes is basically just a show to highlight "everyday heroes" in your neighborhoods like a firemen, baker, stuff like that. It was charming when I was younger but that's about it. 😊
Hello. Good afternoon. My name is Brian López. What is your favorite Codename: Kids Next Door episode of all time? Please let me know in the comments down below.
This is where my generation came in remember watching most of these shows after my mom dropped me off at school while eating breakfast in the morning before we started class had most of bear in the big blue house on VHS and the CDs ❤❤
Jojo's Circus will randomly pop into my head every now and then. I used to watch it a LOT as a kid. There also happens to be a photo of me with Jojo and Goliath from my first DIsney trip in 2005 (I was a baby and the photo is in a photo book)
I wish I saw BITBBH but I was more into Rolie Polie Olie back then! Heck, I even remember owning a VHS of that show with the episodes about the family movie and the best doggone show in the world
40:21 Speaking of Bluey, it has a surprising amount of connections to Playhouse Disney. The creator, Joe Brumm, worked as a freelance animator and one of the shows he worked on was Charlie and Lola. In fact, I would not be surprised if the episode “Dragon” took some inspiration from that show. Of course, the biggest connection is with The Wiggles since both programs are based in Australia. The band ensemble from 2013 to 2021 appeared in an episode where they had a picture taken and are called “The Waggles”, because they’re dogs, and Anthony Field, who as of typing this is the only remaining band member from when it started, does a couple of voice roles.
I forgot about Lou and Lou. I hated those two as a kid honestly. They were the walking talking definition of a brownnosers. Your take on them was accurate and really funny.
Can you talk about PBS Kids Sprout? It was a children's channel that launched in 2005 that aired acquired shows and also original ones. In 2017 the channel rebranded as Universal Kids and the Sprout channel ceased to exist. I grew up watching shows and their programming blocks back in the day and now I miss it
I was very much a Noggin kid, but hearing Imagination Movers, Rolie Polie Olie, Charlie and Lola, and Johnny and the Sprites brought up again made me SO happy.
You were as was way more of a Disney kid. I remember all of these but not playhouse Disney probably because after I was 6 it changed for the better in my opinion to DisneyJR which also has a lot of memorable shows that I know way more of. It is still the kids channel for Disney to this day.
Damn, seeing the thumbnail i just got hit by a wave of nostalgia! I remember these shows! Charlie and Lola,JoJo's circus, The Wiggles! And so on! Damn haven't seen these shows in So long 😢
The Doodlebops was such a trip looking back. I loved singing along to it as a kid and my parents were left incredibly confused by the sight of these clowns or whatever they're supposed to be. It was so bizarre, but so enjoyable.
I grew up watching a lot of these shows, and now my daughter (who just turned 2) is obsessed with Wiggles, Imagination Movers, and Mickey Mouse on Disney+
Ooh and Aah were like the mascots of Playhouse Disney. I fully recall there were several goodbyes from them that aired as they were retired with the transition to Disney Jr
Bear in the big blue house was my absolute FAVORITE as a kid, I wore down so many vhs tapes rewatching them lol, i even still have my character plushies and im 26 lol its such a comforting show, playhouse disney as a whole was my favorite they were just so fun and sweet, my future kids are gonna watch these shows idc what year it is
I did not realize how puppet-centric playhouse Disney was, especially during the first half of its run. Nowadays on Disney Junior its just CGI shows of popular Disney movies and tv shows
I haven’t thought about these shows in many years and seeing this video honestly made me tear up 😢 I saw a lot of these shows as a child and it holds a special place in my heart but hands down The Bear in The Big Blue House is my favorite!!
The Wiggles were single-handedly the greatest highlight about Playhouse Disney. As a small child, whenever one of their tv shows or music videos start to air, I immediately got hooked to them. They were the reason why I wanted to watch Playhouse Disney, and later PBS Sprout. There’s just something about them that really made them special. Plus they had a fascinating history during their career in children’s music and entertainment throughout the 90’s and 2000’s.
Have you watched their documentary on Prime Video? It's really good and covers a lot about their history! It's easy to see that they really love what they did/do. It was truly a passion project. They weren't just in it for the money. They genuinely loved teching kids and making them smile.
Oh god the amount of nostalgia that is shooting in my head. Little Einsteins, Jojo Circus, Higglytown heroes, Charlie and Lola, Handy Manny and the list just goes on
I remember all the shows you mentioned... Except Jojo's Circus, that series was taken off the air before I really started remembering the channel... Due to that, I find it and Rolie Polie Olie as lost relics I feel I missed out on, but I'm an adult now so I can't exactly understand the hype too well, looking at clips I feel like Jojo's Circus would be way too fast paced and high energy for me, but I am still trying to see it in the light a little kid would see it in...
I didn’t really grow up with the Disney Channels show, though I did watch a ton of the shows during the Playhouse Disney/Disney Junior block. Jojo's Circus, The Wiggles, The Doodlebops, and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse amongst other nice live action and cartoon shows that were airing around the time!
The only thing I really remember about Stanley is his brother's "An ape's not a chimp. A chimp's not a monkey." song that went WAY harder than it had to.
I watched an ungodly amount of Little Einsteins as a kid. I was too little to remember a lot of the 90s Playhouse shows (save for those that got rerun all of the time) but I vividly remember patting to get the spaceship going. I remember being upset when Playhouse got taken off the air. Disney Junior had plenty of fine programming, I guess (I was really too old for it, but my little brothers weren't, so I watched plenty of those shows) but I missed my Playhouse friends.
As a kid born inn 2003, I remember Jojo's Circus, The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, My Adventures With Tigger and Pooh (The "Think Think Think" song is a banger), Choo Choo Soul, Teaching my Alligator Manners, Charlie and Lola, Little Einsteins, Oooh and Ahh, Imagination Movers, and the Wiggles (which I saw in concert back in 2006 and I still have the tickets)
You don’t remember Rollie Polly Olie or PBandJ Otter because those were still playing then quite frequently and I certainly remember them. And I was only born a year later then so how do you not remember those. I also know a lot of the 90s ones as well because of Disney+ and I love them . They are some of the best kids shows ever made even if in some of the episodes the animation could have been better. I didn’t even realize until he said that they would have aired on playhouse Disney.
@@SnoopytheGirl Hello. Good afternoon. My name is Brian López. What is your favorite Happy Monster Band episode? Please let me know in the comments down below.
The second I saw the Go Baby logo, I practically had a war flashback. I was so terrified of this show that I would just hide my face under the closest object and wait until it went away.
So much nostalgia! I loved Handy Manny, maybe not as much as Bob The Builder [ when I was little, every time we went to Chuck E Cheese, I HAD to go on the Bob The Builder ride], but it was still amazing. I loved all these shows but I was OBSESSED with Bear In The Big Blue House and The Wiggles when I was little. The songs and stories still hold up today!
Man Playhouse Disney I remember (almost) all of these shows! Stanley was my favorite as a kid! I made a my own great big book of everything out of poster board and large sheets of construction paper. I was a dedicated child lol
We need more cartoon creators that understand kids don't need ridiculously saturated colours, movements going nuts, etc. Bluey is the only current one I can think of for toddlers right now.
I remember back when Out of the Box was still airing I would get out an oatmeal container or whatever I could use as a drum and play along with their goodbye song at the end of the episode. :)
Higgly town hero’s is like a fever dream to me I can picture the day time setting I would be watching it but can’t quite remember what happened in the show
There are two things that Rolie Polie Olie and Jojo's Circus had in common They both got taken off the air before some could experience them And they're both so off the wall crazy that people keep thinking they made them up
I was born in 2002, so I grew up in the era of Playhouse Disney where I can remember when they changed the name. Imagination Movers was the best show for me and my sister growing up. Bunnytown also deserves a mention. We had a DVD of Bunnytown and we would watch it all the time! Jungle Junction had a great theme song. I definitely remember ChooChoo Soul.
SAME!!! Every day before preschool my brother and I would watch pbs and it was Sesame Street, curious George, then super why then sometimes we would catch a little bit of Sid The Science Kid or Zooboomafoo!
I KNEW that Little Einsteins was also gonna be listed here too and that I had such a soft and enjoyed heart and feeling watching that show since when I was like 4. Those iconic (yet underrated) 4 kids were the real reason why I wanted to learn more about talented classical artists and classical music from the classic era. It felt like such a smart and intelligent show for everyone. I even also remember having a crush on Leo from the show as a kid because I always thought he looked so handsome, haha. (This may sound rlly dumb, but like if I also knew that he secretly listens to Red by Taylor Swift and that his favorite track would be All Too Well because of the line “You used to be a little kid with glasses in a twin-sized bed”) But I’m happy that there’s still a few people out there who still remember Little Einsteins. 💜❤️
@@SophiesTheDevilOverlordLady It's gonna be funnier if I knew they were Swifties because Flight of the Instrument Fairies literally aired on Taylor's 19th birthday.
Not only do I remember this show, but some kid at my school snuck into the office and blasted a trap remix of the Little Einsteins theme song on the school speaker as an April Fools Day prank and the whole school died with laughter, even the teachers
It hurts me internally that we’re going to run out of the generations that grew up with this channel. The Wiggles, I had a small crush on Anthony as a kid, I had no business crushing on an old guy. Also he’s still doing it till this day?? Damn, respect for the ride or die
Playhouse Disney was my favorite growing up!!! The online games were so fun, too!! All the shows were so great and they made me feel and learn so much!!!
Fun fact: Bear in the Big Blue House was NOT a Disney property when it first aired. It was co-produced by The Jim Henson Company and Shadow Projects (the latter of which also produced The Book of Pooh), and was entirely owned by Henson until 2004, when it was bought up by Disney along with the Muppets franchise.
Holy moly it’s amazing how many of these shows I had forgotten about but now distinctly remember watching. So much of my childhood that had faded from memory until now. Thanks for the retrospective!
I do remember watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and It's my favorite show. One of my favorite episode would be Season 3, Episode 5 "Happy Birthday, Toodles". It's where Toodles has a face and a voice for the first time.

You just unlocked a core memory when you showed Choo-Choo Soul, Ooh, Aah, and You, Go Baby, Tiger and Pooh, Can You Teach My Alligator Manners?, Little Einsteins, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Roli-Poli, and Ze Fronk
I grew up with higglytown heroes, but I can hardly remember anything about it. I think it’s about them following different people with jobs in their town and explaining how they’re heroes for doing their job or smth lol. It was entertaining at least
I watched it too I remember every episode had to do with a different job, I vividly remember episodes about a vet, a taxi driver and I REMEMBER THE LITERAL PIZZA GUY BEING THE HERO OF AN EPISODE
I need to watch 'Out of the Box' again! I completely forgot how catchy the goodbye song is! As for 'The Doodlebops,' you gotta admit that DeeDee had mad vocal pipes!
Conner I wanna thank you for this video. I remember after you posted the Nick jr episode that I wanted a playhouse Disney by commenting and this turned out great. I was a 2008 baby so I have a lot of nostalgia for anything that was made in 2006 because they used to broadcast the most. Mickey Mouse clubhouse was my absolute favourite growing up and still have nostalgia for it to this day. Thank you for this video.
Here are a few things I'd like to say. 1. The Imagination Movers are not only another band, but they also sang Playhouse Disney's 2007 theme song, so in a way, they're kinda like the secondary mascots of the channel. 2. I never knew this would be how I found out Carl Wheezer & Joker were in Tasty Time with ZeFronk. 3. Go Baby was animated by Little Airplane Productions, AKA the people behind Wonder Pets & Oobi. 4. As someone who watched Playhouse Disney in its last few years, I don't remember ANYTHING about Lou & Lou Safety Patrol. 5. Ooh and Aah are kinda like the mascots of 2007-2011 Playhouse Disney, as they would be the ones to tell us what show was coming up next. 6. My Friends Tigger & Pooh was a Playhouse Disney exclusive. When Disney Junior came around, there wasn't a SINGLE rerun to be found. Shows that ended before the rebrand like Higglytown Heroes, Little Einsteins, hell I think even PB&J Otter & Charlie and Lola got reruns, but nothing for Tigger & Pooh. 7. Handy Manny & Special Agent Oso get the honor of being the first Playhouse Disney shows to have a crossover together. 8. WTF was that horrible framerate for all the Handy Manny footage?!
Connor Higglytown heroes is about learning about the true heroes that exist in our world, such as firefighters, mailman police officers, even a pizza, delivery guy in someway, shape or form we could even be a Higglytown hero
I believe that's called Photo puppetry, the ones where they obviously took multiple photos and are moving them around. I believe that one kids show with the three class pets uses it too.
There was a Canadian kids show called Angela Anaconda that did that animation style HORRIBLY, kinda like that weird Go Baby show Conner talked about here.
many people keep referring to Handy Manny as a ripoff of Bob the Builder when it's not! since Bob the Builder is about heavy-duty construction work and has talking construction vehicles and is animated in Stop-Motion while Handy Manny is about repairing appliances furniture etc. and also talks about carpentry and has talking power tools and is animated in CGI
Fun Fact: the same guy who helped create Rolly Polly Ollie also is the reason why we have Meet the Robinsons and the rise of the Guardians
I think he worked on Robots too, like if you compare the bots in Rolly Polly Ollie to Robots, you’ll notice how similar they are.
Yep. William Joyce
This comment just made meet the robinsons make more sense artistically
Yep! I love the character designs in Rolie Polie Olie. They just ooze William Joyce and it's lovely 🤌🏻

In many ways, some of the best gateways into classical music have been from cartoons, classic Looney Tunes is certainly up there in that hierarchy.
I have a soft spot for it too!!

I didn't know that about the theme song. Omg. ;-; I love the connections.

Thats a name i haven't heard is awhile...
And god do i miss it, and childhood...
I forgot about the train one, the cooking doggo one I only remembered small splices of
Yeah as you mentioned, the puppetry in The Book of Pooh is based on bunraku puppetry.

That transition from the “So Long…Farwell” song to “Diary of Jane” for the Book of Pooh had me ROLLING
Who else grew up with Jojo's Circus before Bizarre Adventure became a meme?
I did.
Me,too.
I did, too!
I did 😋✋
Same time Jojo Levesque started her pop career (at the age of 13). With her debut song, Leave (Get Out) becoming a radio hit.
I met the performer/puppeteer of Bear at a convention once and he was the nicest person ever. He even let me hold a Tutter puppet.
YAY, a new video from ConnorTheWaffle and Playhouse Disney was my childhood as well as PBS kids and Nick Jr. I miss it so much.
PBS kids and Nick JR are still around you know. So is the kids Disney channel it’s just called DisneyJR now and I highly recommend that you check it out because it’s awesome.
As a kid of the early 2000s, I remember watching some of these shows on Playhouse Disney. And The Hop Hop Jump In song from Handy Manny was my jam.
That’s a certified classic show💯
About U.N.I.Q.U.E. from Special Agent Oso, that acronym sounds like something Mr. Warburton or the writers from Kids Next Door would make up.

Happy monster band REALLY SLAYED. The music was really good tbh, and I think it’s kinda legendary to this day
It also introduced me to Tally Hall

I gotta say the Doodlebops is a live action production that uses puppet tree and voice actors who portrayed the main characters of the show
40:21 Speaking of Bluey, it has a surprising amount of connections to Playhouse Disney.
Some of my Playhouse Disney shorts was The Shanna Show, Captain Carlos and Happy Monster Band.

Wiggles is childhood and okay I didn't watch it a lot when I was a little kid 🙃
Have you watched their documentary on Prime Video? It's really good and covers a lot about their history! It's easy to see that they really love what they did/do. It was truly a passion project. They weren't just in it for the money. They genuinely loved teching kids and making them smile.

Bear in the Big Blue House and Rolie Polie Olie will always be god tier classics in my heart.
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Handy Manny, SpongeBob, Sonic X, IDK what to say anymore……

I can't believe I have memories of every show. Definitely an unlocked door 😂

Some of my Playhouse Disney shorts that unfortunately wasn't on this list was The Shanna Show, Captain Carlos and Happy Monster Band.

You don’t remember Rollie Polly Olie or PBandJ Otter because those were still playing then quite frequently and I certainly remember them. And I was only born a year later then so how do you not remember those. I also know a lot of the 90s ones as well because of Disney+ and I love them .
Charlie and Lola. Finally, I was trying so hard to remember. "What was that kids show that looked like The Life and Times of Tim?"
Man Playhouse Disney I remember (almost) all of these shows! Stanley was my favorite as a kid! I made a my own great big book of everything out of poster board and large sheets of construction paper. I was a dedicated child lol

AHHHHH TS MENTION AHAHHAHAHA!!!!
Btw I actually imagine Little Einsteins singing to Long Live (yes the Taylor song) because of the stage play motif.
I would say if they were TS songs, I would do:

Quincy = ME! 💟
Leo = All Too Well ❤
Annie = Electric Touch 💜
Mickey Mouse- NOTHING!
SpongeBob- nothing!
