  • Here is my review of the Osprey Rook 65 Backpack. This is a 65 litre backpacking bag that weighs 1.6kg and it suited as a summer backpack due to it's fantastic Airspeed back system. The Osprey Rook 65L backpacking bag is a cheaper Osprey backpack but it is still high quality, it just lacks some features to other Osprey rucksacks.

The Osprey Rook 65L backpack is a one size backpack. Personally, I would say this suits people from 5'6" to 6' tall. The ladder lock system works really well meaning that once the back is adjusted it won't move.
Dimensions are 74L x 42W x 36D. The fabric is an extremely hard wearing 600D Polyester. Personally I think the osprey rook backpack would be good for weights of up to 15kg (similar to my Osprey Kestrel).
An adjustable and comfortable large capacity pack.
As long as your pack fits well and is well ventilated you can carry large loads comfortably.
The Osprey Rook 65 rucksack features a highly-adjustable ventilated backsystem, using AirSpeed suspended mesh over a large airflow cavity. This allows the body to sink into the hipbelt and lumbar area of the pack, greatly improving overall comfort and providing a very stable and supportive load-carry.
The torso length adjustment is very intuitive, with an innovative ladder-lock system so the pack can be quickly and easily adjusted to fit perfectly. To fit a wider variety of torso-lengths, these packs come complete with dual load-lifter points on the upper frame, ensuring that the harness will remain comfortable in whichever position it’s placed.
A large, highly padded hipbelt provides a very comfortable fit and helps you to carry heavier loads.
The pack has a full range of features to make as practical as it is comfortable.
    Integrated & detachable raincover
Sleeping bag base compartment with internal divider
Mesh dual access water bottle pockets
    Twin zippered hipbelt pockets
    Internal hydration sleeve
    Sternum strap with emergency whistle
    Top-load internal compression strap
    Fixed top-lid with zippered pocket
    Removable sleeping pad straps
    Twin compression webbing straps

I have this bag and its awesome. It gets hammered most weekends in the New Zealand Tararuas and comes back for more. Normal weight for me is ~17kgs and its fine.

Just picked one of these up from millets online on the back of watching your review. Keep up the good work 👍

Bought this after my OEX back pack broke after second use. I am 6 foot and no issues. I have added some shock cord to back and top pocket to give some extra storage for jacket or a xlite therma rest pad copy. Not sure if you noticed the loops. Do the shock cord much like threading laces. I tend to limit myself to 45 ltrs of gear just in case I need to bug out and through everything in. Great pack.

Regarding your comments about the lack of a stash pouch, I agree, so I used the loops you mention at 7:22 and some elastic cord to create some strapping for my raincoat and it works really well, even faster than a pouch!

Oh and regarding the price, you can get in on sale relatively easily. I got mine for £115.

I have had this pack for a few years now and have put some solid miles on it. I started out thinking it was pretty good but there a few things that make me want to sell it and get something different. First of all, it squeaks like crazy, nothing like waking down a quiet trail and all you hear is squeaking in your ear instead of your surroundings. Second, the zipper pocket on top is horrible. It’s in the worst position possible and my hand barely fits in when I’m trying to grab something out of it. Especially if I’m trying to fill that pocket with things I need. Third, something about where this pack sits in that traps that feels very uncomfortable. Feels like a pack that Osprey out very little effort into.

    Hi Andy
I'm surprised no one has yet reviewed the updated Exos & Eja backpacks, Osprey have put back the hip belt pockets and made the back adjustable. Has to be the ultimate backpack now ? I have the light green Exos 48L and is great but I might have to upgrade 😊
    All the best 👍

I agree! Maybe it’s because most reviewers already have at least 5 backpacks 😂

Do you think this is more comfy than the new style Exos, I have both and consider this superior in design, the Exos the mesh back is sloppy and slack and the frame lacking in rigidity in the right areas to keep the pack away from your back and the air system to work perfectly as it should. The Exos also does have terrible side load tensioning straps they are all one piece and basically useless at tensioning the load inside tight as they are intended to. You might as well just take them off like many people do which is not good but at least you can get your water bottles out of the side pockets then, as with the load tension straps on you cant get your bottles in and out of the side mesh pockets and they don't route inside either which is a terrible design flaw. The Exos 58 is only about 180 grams lighter than the Rook 65 and with less capacity as i have weighed them both. The Rook you can get your bottles out of the pockets easy and back in and the compression straps don't interfere with its features and work much, much better being proper wide one piece webbing straps in two separate key load areas. The sleeping mat straps on the Rook at the bottom are much better too again proper wide webbing with separate straps and buckles either side independent of each other rather than the one piece skinny strap the Exos uses and threads through into one strap The only thing I have the Exos with something better is the back mesh stash pocket the rest of it is inferior to the Rook.

Would this do for a 4 day festival trip ? Is 65l enough or would an 80l sack be more beneficial. I will have to walk quite a way but need a sack big enough. Thanks.

      @BackpackingUK  ปีที่แล้ว

I wouldn't go below 65L. 65L is a fairly 'standard' sized backpack for multi-day trips.

I bought my Osprey last November for just under £100 from Go Outdoors... I wonder if they'll reduce the price when it goes out of season?

It's that times of year when the end of season sales start. It's worth keeping an eye out for bargains!
