I spoken to a lot of people that did not get into Andor because it didn't feed in to their Star wars gripes and callbacks. But man they really missed out! The sound design, the buildups, top notch... I appreciate the comparisons between the 4K Blu-ray and the streaming service.
I have to admit I'm in the initial I don't care about it camp. But... I recently watched the Jason Borne films again and then twigged that Tony Gilroy wrote them, so now my curiosity was peeked in terms of what he can bring to Star Wars. So maybe it's a show worth watching with out paying for Disney + and offering much needed physical media support. I miss the cheese tagines of yesteryear and have Lucasfilm/Disney put in the marketing from the writer of Jason Borne and Rouge One on the posters. I made have given it a try.
If you’re going to do a spin-off, Andor is how you do a spin-off, something similar but also a little bit more different. However, some corners of the internet are chanting that this is “true Star Wars”, which is ridiculous. Star Wars IS space adventures, and lightsabers and pew pews and exploding spaceships. It was never an intensely grounded political war thriller. They must not have seen the original trilogy for years.
Not sure how you missed talking about the incredible marching band in the last arc and how that music and scene all came together. That alone is reason enough to get Andor in its full physical media glory.
Strange, the HDR10 color grading should be exactly the same from both the D+ and UHD disc. The source is likely the same IMF package delivery. Maybe it's the D+ application that is troublesome in some way. If you're comparing the HDR10 UHD to Dolby Vision D+, there should be these types of slightly differences in contrasts and highlights but not in HDR10. The streaming quality is also due to the fact that the series like many others on D+ have a digital/smooth image with a very little grain structure that is easier to compress.
Among the array of Star Wars content released during the Disney era, Andor is the show that stood out for me .This comes as no surprise, since Rogue One was the only other title that struck a chord with me prior to that but Andor stepped it up a notch. The series’ ability to elevate the narrative and deliver a meticulously crafted and well-executed story is indeed a remarkable achievement amongst mediocrity that has become synonymous with the SW brand of late. Thank you for showing it some love mate.I cannot wait for my steelbook too now. For me the audio alone is worth the investment because even though the DDP Atmos sounded mega on D+ , absolutely cannot wait to punch it up in full bloodied TrueHD Atmos.
I got the Nordic version, and the menus are different. They don't have those concept art style backgrounds, instead it's just still images from the series. Also, the art cards are not packaged in a plastic sleeve, they are basically loose inside the cover. Seems like the North American version is slightly better, assuming you don't need Nordic subtitles.
I will have to note they're still compression on disc just more on streaming bit rate is a little higher on the disc and that what matters plus the sound is that much better on disc
I hate when people say it's not compressed on the disc it is just different compression and not as much if you want uncompressed you have to listen to the linear PCM version of the disc only small percentage of movies include a surround mix like that
Glad to hear the dialogue was better. As I mentioned in the comments last year in your review of the show, I had to leave the subtitles on. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad now though anyways after running magic beans. Really nice review. I might pick this up.
Steelbook, looks nice Atmos sound very immersive. Gotta say 1st disk was kinda boring, though really kicks in 2nd episode on 2 disk..... However there some quality control issue with the transfer. I notice on a couple occasions flickering on bottom and top black bar of screen, some white flickering. Every 2nd episode for only for few seconds then goes away. Not too much distraction however annoying from a quality precpetive and people forking out $$$
I got mine on Wednesday and saw the first episode. It sounds so much better. The picture is a bit better, but those blacks make a huge difference. For some reason everything looks really washed out on my disney app. So happy i got this. Andor and rogue one are my favorite stories!
Holy cow, I didn't realize the "previously on" segment was part of the disc release. That would annoy the crap out of me. And I'm a physical media enthusiast. At that point I'd probably rip the discs to a plex server and do a custom edit of the files to trim out that part of the video without re-compressing.
For a change it was good storytelling, not some hot-button issue that we've been living through for the last 5 years. Tony Gilroy is a master storyteller- his filmmaking street-cred gave him the creative freedom. It was that currency that broke through the Disney noise. Who knows, it may be the last good series for Disney.
Since Disney is still unsure about the future of Star Wars, I hope they see Tony Gilroy’s worth as a storyteller and make him a co-producer over all things Star Wars along with Dave Filoni. 🤞
Just ordered my steel book, it’s totally worth it for me. Andor feels like it was written for HBO and just happened to be put on Disney plus, which honestly holds it back imo
No doubt one of the best Star Wars series period. Episode 6 (The Eye) is my favorite with the Atmos effects. I look forward to Andor season 2! Great review! BTW: NO ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!
Why would you take screenshots with a phone and try to compare them? Leads viewers to potentially make some comparisons that are not relevant to anything.
Yeah… there could be copy protection thing in backround. Also showing the TV screen vs taking screen capture is not the same thing! Other is raw picture. The other is combination of image settings, room lighting etc…
Dude, I hadn’t watched since the first time on D+. I was just going to skip around for the 4K Blu-ray review, but I got sucked into it again! It’s so good! 😄
Disney audio mixes arent up to standard period, other studios have superior mixes, in other disc releases the atmos is far superior to the streaming counterpart, I reckon despite this its still worth buying because disney plus may just drop the show off the server one day
If this series was removed entirely from the Star Wars story line it would still be great. That it is part of the Star Wars universe is incredible. It is my favorite, I did enjoy Obi Wan, and Asohka. The Mandalorian was good too. I'm still a little mad at Rogue One.

I was hooked after he killed those 2 guys in the ally in the first episode. I was like damn! thats pretty brutal and dark for star wars
@@undericeaxeman Same! Surprised the crap out of me! 😄
Agree, Andor was my favorite of any of the new series on Disney, by far. For all the reasons you mentioned, as well as excellent production quality
Not sure how you missed talking about the incredible marching band in the last arc and how that music and scene all came together.
That alone is reason enough to get Andor in its full physical media glory.
They made the empire actually threatening. A nice change of pace
Right? Bix’s arc alone, being tortured for information? Yikes. The Empire is actually threatening!
Great job and if I have a AMBEO MAX and don’t have the room on the fireplace for CD player what would you recommend circuitry movies?

Do you think/expect the streaming audio to be better once Disney+ implements DTS:X audio later this month?
I sure hope so! That’s what DTS is claiming. 🤞
It will likely still be lossy. They are largely claiming having height channels makes it atmos or dtsx
To me, Andor is the best Star Wars property, There is along with rogue one
The closest to the original trilogy, by far. 🤘

Was about to say "but if the electricity goes..", but.. no you have that covered too. 😂 Nice review.
Haha! Yeah buddy! 😄🤘
The audio was crazy good on Disney plus I imagine it’s amazing on 4k disk
It is! 🎉

I loved Andor so much that I picked up both the Blu-ray steelbook and the 4K steelbook.:) I was blown away by this show.
Wow! 🤩
Why in the world would they include the recaps on the discs?
Yeah, seems silly. 🤷♂️
@@ealanosborne Like Mandolorian.
Because everyone watch one episode in every two months!
😂😂😂
Yeah… it is annoying… but skipping points and scene points would remedy it easily.
Sight…
It’s for “recall”, Avatar.

I wish the audio was reference quality , it was great, but still lacking a bit for me.
I forgot mention this, but it still did suffer from “Disney 4K Blu-ray-itis” where I had to turn it up more than other discs I watch in this theater.

The way Disney has maunfactured this is appalling. Is it possible to add bookmarks for specific scenes?
🤷♂️
The subtle differences is well worth it if the show is one of your favorites.
Hell yeah! 🤘

isn't there piracy protection that blocks screenshots from the tv
Yeah… there could be copy protection thing in backround.

The series is fantastic cinematic tv! I agree with everything you mentioned
cant wait to re-watch on 4kBRD!

After watching the credits on final episode it will show you what they are building in the prison.
Oh right…I heard about that once upon a time. Need to check that out. 😄

When the price is better it will be worth getting the disc for picture and sound. In the meantime I have Disney +
My steelbook is on pre order.

I’m glad they are putting their media on disc because I am not a fan of Disney plus or their support team
Thank you 👏🏼🏴🇬🇧
