Imagine an anime where fictional countries are now reperesented as giant carriers roaming the seas since the continents have been badly destroyed by natural disasters? The nations form alliances and war against each other for control of their carriers or their utter destruction.
the official length of the Ooarai ship is 7.6km , width is 1.1km & height is 900 meters. I tried to figure out what would be the cost of such ship, however they didnt mention the tonnage! & the formulas to calculate tonnage from the dimensions dont work so I did a rough estimate & concluded that the tonnage is 1.8 billion tonnes! the cost of civilian cargo ships tends to be much less than that of military ships so I assumed that every 100 thousand tonnes would cost 300$ million, which means that the cost of the Ooarai ship is 5.4$ trillion. in the anime they said it carries 50 thousand or so people but in reality a ship of this size would carry millions mainly inside, if the upper 500 meters is segmented into floors with each floor being 4 meters in height then the total floor area would be 875 km2, that is more internal space than total area of Singapore! the Ooarai ship could accomodate 14 million people comfortably, assuming that the GDP per capita is 50000$ so in a single year the city would produce 700$ billion so in about 8 years it would make back all the money spent on it, after that it will start making a profit! does that mean we will ever see a ship like that in real life? well no private company can fund it so the only way is that a government would do it, the only countries that have enough money for that are the US, China & Japan, the US doesnt like spending on infrastructure so we can write them off the list, so the only hope we have is if an Otaku ruled China or Japan, the constrution would take 20 years or so.
Seriously, these ships are freaking big. The oorai is 7 km long and 1 km high. 1 KM IS LIKE THE HIGHEST BUILDING IN THE WORLD. The longest ship ever built on earth was 500 meters long. How insanely long this is. And the Ark royal is twice the size of the oorai in like every dimension. But the anime is still good ;-)
A 1km long Carrier was already projected , but was considered just insane by the amount of raw materials that it would require to be built , something that size won't Just be nearly Impossible economicaly but a Titanic enginearing chalenge
An interesting thing when you look at most carriers in Girls und panzer. The ones with a clear country of inspiration look exactly like the biggest aircraft carrier that country has ever built
The British carrier is based on the Ark Royal, which is *not* the largest British carrier The American carrier is based on the George Washington, which is also not the largest US carrier. The Japanese carrier is based on the Akagi... You know the drill Oh, and the Italians as well. Aquilla.
@@HaydenLau. Yep. they are built based on some carrier that is iconic for the country, preferably a WW2 one (Pravda and their totally-not-a-Kiev are the exception). And some schools, like Maginot, have their ship based upon the SMALLEST carrier of their based-country history (the French _submarine carrier_ "Surcouf").
Scientifically the depth of that docking port would be at least 1 and a half kilometer to keep that vessel afloat or else it would just beach it and flood the port with sea water.

funny is the Zuikaku ( Ooarai Girls Academy's school ship ) is bigger than the HMS Ark Royal ( St. Gloriana Girls College's school ship ) in real life, and in this anime the Ark Royal is significantly bigger than the Zuikaku. Both ships were sunk in WW2 though.
Those city carriers are HUGE beyond belief! They must be uber-expensive to build AND maintain! The mere designing of such carriers must've taken ages let alone actually building them!
Imagine they are actually massive battle stations that can rule the entire pacific ocean with just one of them,(not to mention there are other schools out there...)
Just remember these humans are obviously smarter and far richer than us. And it seems it's much easier to get access to heavy metals and crystals closer to the earth's surface.
Look up the British Grenadier March. It's a traditional marching tune that's been played by the British Grenadier Guards since the 18th century. Stands to reason the British team would have a massive ship though. After all, 'Britania rules the waves'.
Having city sized carriers could be a good solution to overpopulation. Simply build city sized ship carriers, have people live on them and make them districts of whichever nation they're part of. If they keep advancing city sized carrier technology, they could end up with ones large enough to fit 1 or 2 million people at some point!
You would need enough agricultural land to support the population. And if population keeps growing, then in the long run, this won't help. The only real solution is birth control.

In one of the OVA's, the main characters explain that the ship is run by wind, solar, ocean currents and maybe nuclear too. I agree that oil couldn't possibly run a school carrier ship, even one as small as Oarai.
The space on this ships are very bad optimized. I have read some commentaries that said that the oarai's ship is 7.5 km long, 1.1 km wide and 900 m high approximately (higher than the Spanish average height that is 600m high), and St.Gloriana one doubles the size of oarai's ship, so is 15km long, 2.2km wide and 1.8km high (if oarai's ship is terrifyingly big, this one is incredible, is bigger than important cities and capitals and higher than the average height of Switzerland that is 1.3km). To make this more incredible, the Saunders' ship is twice bigger than the St.GGC's one, so is 30km long 4.4 km wide and 2.6 km high (the surface is bigger than Barcelona, Spain, is longer than the distance between Madrid and Alcalá de Henares (an Spanish city near Madrid) that is 28km long and is higher than the mount Fuji that is 3.776km high). To make it more imaginable, the StGGC's ship can be seen from the ISS, and the Saunders' one can be seen like a dot from the moon. The space is very bad optimized because the school with more studients (that is Kuromorimine) has 100000 studients, so in Saunders, that have less studients, they would be very separated. And they don't have factories and cultivated terrains (the last have a exception, that is Anzio) so it makes the ships be very empty, and I only have in count the upper part of the ship, so it make it probably 1000 or 1500 times bigger.

There was an OVA that explained it.
I am not a fan of the series so can someone tell me if there is a in lore reason why they even built not one but two stupidly huge carriers? I mean they would cost a shit ton of money to design whitout even talking about the cost of building those things, they would also be very expensive to move, one normal modern carrier arledy uses a lot of oil, unless those thing are nuclear powered (which I doubt) they couldn't even move, also just why, like can't they just build a normal School and just ship around tanks whit smaller cheaper boats.
lol
Eh? EH?! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHH?!?!?! O_O
