Mach 1 is the speed of sound which is 767.27 mpg. Hence Mach 10 would be a mind boggling 7,672.7 mph (varying a bit by altitude/barometric pressure/humidity). The Darkstar aircraft (aka Lockheed Martin SR-72) is a "hypothetical" descendant of the SR-71 Blackbird (which looks somewhat similar) and which had a top speed of Mach 3.3 or around 2,700 mph and played a big role in high altitude, high speed reconnaissance flights during the Cold-War. You might notice the small skunk emblem on the tail of the mock-up in the movie which stands for Lockheed-Martin's skunkworks which created the first SR-71, the F-117 Nighthawk (the first Stealth Fighter), and probably lots of other interesting experimental aircraft the public doesn't know about yet. I may be mistaken but I think a lot of testing of Skunkworks aircraft is done in Area 51 in Nevada (made famous by UFO theorists) which is probably where the movie is trying to suggest Maverick is assigned at the start of the film. Probably kind of goofy since Maverick is an active duty Navy Pilot and the SR-72 would be an Air Force aircraft rather than a Navy aircraft. There is a really interesting critique of this flight on YT by a former Air Force Pilot named C.W. Lemoine (channel by same name) who pointed out there would be a zero percent chance of Maverick surviving an ejection or the break-up of an aircraft traveling any faster than Mach 3 (let alone at >Mach 10) unless the aircraft had an actual ejection capsule built into it that would attempt to protect a pilot ejecting at such insane speeds. The "rogue nation" with the nuclear program is never named in the film but is pretty clearly Iran since it has one of the only air forces in the world that still owns some F-14s (the plane stolen by Maverick and Rooster). The F-14s were sold by the US to the Shah of Iran (friendly to the US) who was subsequently deposed by the Islamic Revolution in the 1970s (presently VERY unfriendly to the US and which coincidentally has a uranium enrichment program everyone is worried about).
I mean I think everyone knew he's dead after ejecting at mach 10 but apparently sr-71 had special ejection seats that would allow the pilot to eject at mach 3 and survive.
thats why he worn a pressure suit once the engines are destroyed and right before they cut to the next scene Mav reduced the thorrtle since they didn't go into detail about the ejection sequench we can take a look at past times when select few pilots who had ejected at mach speeds since pilots who fly the SR 71 wear pressurized suits when they eject their suits gets pressurized when they get eject which protects them from being pummeled .. th-cam.com/video/4o8KpEYOYQQ/w-d-xo.html

One thing you might like, Tom Cruise is a rated pilot in real life. While the Navy wouldn't let him actually fly am F18, the P51 Mustang he flys Penny in at the end actually belongs to Tom and that's him actually flying them in it

It was just a cute way of adding some nostalgia, and another thread that ties back to the original Top Gun.

6:20 Callsigns as far as I know are usually given to you. Like for Hangman, they call him that as Phoenix explains in the movie. Bob's callsign is interesting since it's just his name. Another example from the previous movie, one of the other pilots refers to Goose as "Mama Goose" which is probably a subtle tiny hint as to how Goose got the callsign. I don't know for sure, but I heard your given callsign isn't going to be "cool," but more often than not an honorary way to tease you or make fun of you.
It could be a play on the pilot's name. One Navy pilot wanted his to be Shark. They gave him Minnow. The more you fight it the more it sticks. It could be upgraded if you mess up.
If I recall, Goose's name is based on a pilot who made a mistake during an emergency landing and was given wrong information because of it. So his name is Goose because he was a Silly Goose.
The flying in the canyon was not CGI. the navy has training course in the mountains of Washington State. The movie production was granted permission by the Navy to utilize that low level trading course to film this movie. Of course, Navy pilots did the actual flying!
I had ZERO interest in this movie and the ONLY reason I even watched it was due to EVERYONE telling me I need to see it and happened to go to a friend's house who had rented it. I have finally found the second movie of Tom Cruise that I like.
6:12 "Do they get to pick their call signs?" In the real world Navy and Air Force...no. Your squadron colleagues assign one, and it usually reflects something stupid you did, something funny that happened to you, or something peculiar about your name/background. Unlike the first TG where everyone's call sign was badass, this movie tried to follow the real world method but didn't quite go that far. Examples of real call signs and their origins... 1) A Navy pilot crapped himself after being launched off a carrier and requested an immediate landing. He earned the call sign SPOT = Shit Pants On Takeoff 2) A female pilot was named Katrina, so everyone called her Hurricane. 3) CDR Jesse Reed (an actual Top Gun instructor) had the call sign AHAB = Always Humping Asian Bitches 4) COL Nicole Malachowski (first female Thunderbird pilot) was training with her first squadron and made a big mistake in a simulator. She began chastising herself by saying, "Fucking idiot! Fucking idiot!" which everyone heard on the intercom. Thus, she earned the call sign FIFI.
So Mach 1 is the speed of sound. The fastest recorded speed from a plane is about Mach 3.5ish from the SR-71 Blackbird. The company that was advertised on the plane at the beginning is “Skunkworks” they’re a real company that works with the Navy on actual planes just like the one at the beginning. It’s cool cus Tom Cruise actually went to their facility where they design and make real planes with the navy and he helped with the design of the cockpit if the plane they showed cus in real situations they work with the actual test pilots to design the cockpits to what’s comfortable for that test pilot. Literally they made this movie as accurate and realistic as they could and still having it be an exciting Top Gun type film. Obviously some CGI but they really had all the actors in real F-18’s pulling G’s at real top speeds for about 85% of the shots you see them in. Never been done before and was very expensive but so worth it. Just in the F-18’s the footage they had before editing was more than the entire lord of the rings trilogy combined.
Did you get the Easter egg? When Maverick first meets Penny(Jennifer Connely) in the bar!! Music by David Bowie plays in the background, with whom she filmed Labyrinth when she was 16.
17:08 “Now they’re being fired on.” Because they’re automated machines that defend the air using radar to detect. Going lower means below the radar I think is below 100ft. to remain invisible. Fly higher, you’ll get detected unless you’re flying a stealth fighter/bomber.
Callsigns are voted on by squadron/unit pilots in a somewhat elaborate ceremony involving whiskey and much swearing. It's best earned and my guess is that Rooster's unit mates were aware of his father's Callsign. For example we had a guy named NAFOD (no apparent fear of death) who almost killed himself for buffoonery...best earned. Mach 1.0 is the speed of sound...Mach 10.0 well you can do the math. I'm sure much of this is described in comments below, but sadly we don't all have time to read them all. Cheers LiivReacts.
The first airplanes fast enough to reach mach 1, disintegrated by the shock, just a handfull of military airplanes can handle mach 2, and only super special airplanes can touch mach 3 (like blackbird SR71, mach 3,2). Or in a practical example, the fly time between London to Miami is about 9 hours and 30 minutes, at mach 10 is only 55 minutes.
You should check out the Top Gun Maverick Featurettes on youtube. They give you a behind the scenes look at what the actors had to do to be able to go up in those F18's, plus they had to direct themselves and run the cameras. They are several and they are worth watching.
The crazy spaceship looking plane in the beginning is referred to in some articles as the SR-72. That would mean it's a "descendant " of the SR-71 Blackbird which was a supersonic spy plane used by the U.S. Military and CIA.
if you said you watched the original topgun movie, then you should have known who Penny is. she was mentioned twice in the original movie. first when Goose whispered to Maverick while they were at Stinger's office, and the second when Carole mentioned her name in front of Charlie while Goose was at the piano.
Its easy to miss in and amongst all that was going on in the movie. I remembered it only because I hung on EVERY word that came out of Meg Ryans mouth (I still have a huge crush on her) but yeah It would be easy to miss that info.
You should check out Magnolia for an emotional response from Tom Cruise. He plays a motivational speaker of sorts who is estranged from his father, played by the great Jason Robards. This is a multiple story line film so Cruise or the other actors mentioned are not the sole focus. One of if not the first PT Anderson film, and it's a banger. The cast includes William H. Macy, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and John C. Reilly.
Great reactions to the Top Gun sequel, Liiv!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽I did think this was better than the original. Maverick mentions dating Penny in the original film, but she is not shown. I think her appearance in this film is for the diehard fans of the original.
6:15 a pilots callsign is given to them by their fellow pilots, and is typically something reflecting an embarrassing incident that happened during or prior to their training that theyre renowned for. For example, a trainee a few years back has the UNFORTUNATE last name of "Jobbins", so he got given the callsign Blow, as in, Blowjobbins. Callsigns like Hangman could be given out to people like Hangman if they do make a habit of being selfish and leaving ther wingmen out to dry, but callsigns like Maverick, or Iceman etc are considered "too cool" to be actually used. A name like Phoenix though, could be earned if the pilot happens to have been shot down on several occasions and survived. Contrary to common belief, a callsign also isnt life long. You could lose your current callsign in favour of another "cool" callsign, they earn them through big or heroic feats they pull off in active combat.
Mach 10 with a little more science and physics being involved in the actual Mp/h calculation is essentially 10x the speed of sound. A lot of fighter jets since the F-16 have been capable of surpassing Mach 1 for periods of time and so was one commercial jet that’s now out of commission at this point, the Concorde. The are more commercial jets being built and tested today that will be capable of carrying passengers at supersonic speeds but for now the only way to travel faster then the speed of sound is to join the Air Force or become an astronaut. The movie is surmising that Tom Cruise is becoming the fastest pilot on the planet (though not by as much as you would think as the Darkstar plane he’s flying is based on a real plane the SR-72 Blackbird which was an experimental top secret spy plane used in the latter part of the Cold War capable of approaching Mach 10 but not surpassing it as Tom does in the movie.)
In the United States military you do not get to pick your call sign or nickname. Your fellow sailors, marines, soldiers, airman, or Superior officers give you your call sign or your nickname
YOU do see the simalarity in the names GOOSE and ROOSTER right ? they film writers obviously tried to come up with a name with as many of the same letters as possible ...2 O's a S, and a E, im just amazed how ive yet to see a reaction video mention it..clearly no one else picked up on it
Flying F-18's on this mission is pure Hollywood, as there are multiple ways to attack the facility without putting pilots at risk with a "miracle" approach. Don't get me wrong...it was GREAT storytelling, but most military people will tell you that it was complete fiction. Despite that tiny flaw, this was easily the best film of the year.
Always enjoy your reactions Liv and this was great happy that you enjoyed it , yes it's very similar to the first movie but it really works . I imagine seeing it I'm the cinema with the sound especially would have been a treat . Cheers as always and until the next one TC
2:37 Short answer? Yes... it is really, *really* fast. Long Answer? So... Mach 1 is the speed of sound, which is equal to 1,234.8 kilometers per hour or 767.269 Miles per Hour for Americans like me. Recently, there was a lot of buzz surrounding the Chinese launching a "Hypersonic Missile" over the US. Hypersonic is Mach 5, or 3,500 mph (5,633 kph); so 5 times faster than the speed of sound (though the funny thing is that the higher up in orbit, the lower the threshold is because of the thinner air). Mach 10 is insanely fast, with only the Space Shuttle and Rockets that go into space being able to reach that speed for the time being. Mach 10 is about 7,672.69 mph (12,348 kmh). For reference to something you might use daily, the average SUV will only go to about 80-100 mph (128-161 kmh); and for reference to the movie, the top speed of an F-18 Super Hornet is Mach 1.8 or 1,190 mph (or 1915 kmh). As for why the Navy would want one.... Well the Navy would have no need of something like the Darkstar; but the US Air Force or Space Force would want something like it for sure; as they would probably use it as an interceptor to shoot down the Hypersonic Missiles I mentioned earlier (With missiles aboard the craft of course, as they are travelling faster than bullets). Only problem is that past Mach 5.5 to Mach 6, Jet intakes stop working as the air is moving so fast that the fuel cannot ignite in a combustion engine. So without literal rocket boosters like on the space shuttle; Mach 10 isn't technically possible on a craft like the Darkstar. At best it would reach Mach 5.5 to Mach 6... which no matter what would be a success, imo; since it would still be good as an interceptor (people theorizing it's a recon aircraft have some merit; but at those speeds it would be impossible to take accurate pictures that would be safer to get from a satellite). The movie only went with Mach 10 because it was a nice clean number that sounded fast. Don't think I'm hating on this movie, cause I love it; just wanted to put this out there.
i haven't seen the movie yet but Liv your reaction made me eager to do so this weekend. Fantastic job as always. So proud for you and my thumbs up is merited 1000%
omg go back and watch the 1st one in its entireity.. right at the start after maverick saves the other plane and he is in the office getting yelled at we are told of penny benjaim the admirials daughter... that is who the new love interest/bar owner is
Your question about the speed of sound is not stupid, it's accurate. Yes, at the beginning when he was test flying that airplane, he's going faster than the speed of sound. Mach 1 is the speed of sound which is about 1235 km/h. Mach 10 is 10 times that, imagine.
Tom is 59. Born in July of 1963 I am so surprised that someone who watched the original Top Gun so recently does not know who Penny Benjamin is???? She was mentioned a couple of times in Top Gun. I guess reaction videos are busy reacting and they miss many things
in real life val kilmer has throat cancer so he cant speak at all so they wrote it into the movie and when he spoke in the movie it was actually his son saying those lines and then they just overlayed his voice over his sons please let me know what you think
Hey, Liv. Love your reactions and follow. Have a few Tom Cruise suggestions for you to watch. Early Tom in RISKY BUSINESS, A FEW GOOD MEN, and RAIN MAN. Enjoy.
The Israelis destroyed the Iraqi and Syrian nuclear reactors. So the Israelis could do this ;-) Undergraduate pilot training is 13 months, topped with a tour thru pilot survival school just for this exigency. Then you train for 3 years on your designated airplane. Costs about $5 million to train one pilot.
Mach 10 = 10×the speed of sound. 10×750= 7,500 mph. Roughly... Been 30 years. I imagine "Maverick " had plenty of girlfriends in that time. Generally, as I understand it, you earn a call sign. Who awards it is unclear to me. Your peers would be my guess.
Penny Benjamin is the daughter of an Admiral that MAV had some love connection with only referenced in the beginning of the first film.
Referenced later on too. She must've left quite an impression 😎
Also mentioned by Carol (Meg Ryan) in the diner.

1) A Navy pilot crapped himself after being launched off a carrier and requested an immediate landing. He earned the call sign SPOT = Shit Pants On Takeoff
2) A female pilot was named Katrina, so everyone called her Hurricane.
3) CDR Jesse Reed (an actual Top Gun instructor) had the call sign AHAB = Always Humping Asian Bitches
4) COL Nicole Malachowski (first female Thunderbird pilot) was training with her first squadron and made a big mistake in a simulator. She began chastising herself by saying, "Fucking idiot! Fucking idiot!" which everyone heard on the intercom. Thus, she earned the call sign FIFI.
Next time they steal an F14, they need to arm the ejection seats.
The first plane is the son of blackbird. It is entering service soon. Mach 10 is 10x the speed of sound
She is Penny Benjamin. She was a love interest mentioned in the last movie.
Penny, the bar owner, is mentioned at the beginning of the original Top Gun
The actress in the original top gun isnt acting anymore, Penny was mentioned twice in the first film!
Penny is mentioned twice in the first movie!
You should check out the Top Gun Maverick Featurettes on youtube. They give you a behind the scenes look at what the actors had to do to be able to go up in those F18's, plus they had to direct themselves and run the cameras. They are several and they are worth watching.
Dont.
Makes the fantasy of the movie feel more like real life then and will take you out of the movie.
The crazy spaceship looking plane in the beginning is referred to in some articles as the SR-72. That would mean it's a "descendant " of the SR-71 Blackbird which was a supersonic spy plane used by the U.S. Military and CIA.
At Mach 10 he would get to London from New York in 20-30 minutes. Normally it takes 7+ hours to get there on a passenger jet.
in the 1st movie he mentioned he had a relationship with an admirals daughter that is who Penny is
if you said you watched the original topgun movie, then you should have known who Penny is. she was mentioned twice in the original movie. first when Goose whispered to Maverick while they were at Stinger's office, and the second when Carole mentioned her name in front of Charlie while Goose was at the piano.
Its easy to miss in and amongst all that was going on in the movie. I remembered it only because I hung on EVERY word that came out of Meg Ryans mouth (I still have a huge crush on her) but yeah It would be easy to miss that info.
it wasn't a major plot point so it's easy to miss. if you re watch the first one, you would look for it.
"Bob" is the son of actor Bill Pullman, who he looks identical.
I'm the navy you don't pick your vallsign. It's given to you by teammates
yes you should know what Mach means!! Thanks Tim Hedrick for explaining!!
They hate him because he spent 5 billion dollars trying to get that plane of the ground, and it didn't go anywhere
Although abbreviated, the start up sequence on the F-14 was correct.
In the United States military you do not get to pick your call sign or nickname. Your fellow sailors, marines, soldiers, airman, or Superior officers give you your call sign or
your nickname
18:28: Yes, it is!
Always enjoy your reactions Liv and this was great happy that you enjoyed it , yes it's very similar to the first movie but it really works . I imagine seeing it I'm the cinema with the sound especially would have been a treat . Cheers as always and until the next one TC

Short answer? Yes... it is really, *really* fast.
Most fighter jets can go Mach 2 - 2.5
This is an experimental plane with the speed of just over 7500 MPH
Mach 10. 10 times the speed of sound. Sound travels 333 metres / sec. So he is gonna push the plane to 3330 metres / sec or 3.33 km / sec.
Let complete chop out reacting to the emotional reunion at the end between Maverick and Rooster while we’re at it***
yes they were flying the f14s from the first top gun
Umm... that's exactly why that facility was built inside that mountain range, it's a natural defense, augmented by the surrounding SAMs.
Great movie. Great reaction
Tom Cruise = LEGEND
Yeah Mach is faster than the speed of sound.
And yes planes can fly upside. Don’t ask me why it works. It just works.
Mach 10 is ten times the speed of sound..so around 10,750 mph
I saw this movie 2 dags ago on the big screen, it was so good. Better than the first one! And the music is very good too. 😎 Nice make up, those eyes 👀
Your call sign is given to you in your first squadron.
i haven't seen the movie yet but Liv your reaction made me eager to do so this weekend. Fantastic job as always. So proud for you and my thumbs up is merited 1000%
omg go back and watch the 1st one in its entireity.. right at the start after maverick saves the other plane and he is in the office getting yelled at we are told of penny benjaim the admirials daughter... that is who the new love interest/bar owner is
When you saw those puffs of vapor on the approach, that's what happens when you break the sound barrier!🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
You should watch Minority Report and the Last Samurai. Tom Cruise is a great actor.
Your question about the speed of sound is not stupid, it's accurate. Yes, at the beginning when he was test flying that airplane, he's going faster than the speed of sound.
Mach 1 is the speed of sound which is about 1235 km/h. Mach 10 is 10 times that, imagine.
Mach 10 is 10 times the speed of sound. The next frontier
this was awesome, you actually have the same headset i have, only i have the black one.
Mach 1 is equal to the speed of sound hence Mach 10 means 10X the speed of sound
Yes, Mach 1 is breaking the sound barrier. Mach 10 is 10x that speed.
Best movie 2022.
If you watched the first topgun her name was mentioned by gosses wife penny Benjamin
Tom is 59. Born in July of 1963 I am so surprised that someone who watched the original Top Gun so recently does not know who Penny Benjamin is???? She was mentioned a couple of times in Top Gun. I guess reaction videos are busy reacting and they miss many things
I’m definitely enjoying these comments 😅
What is that headphones you are using ?
in real life val kilmer has throat cancer so he cant speak at all so they wrote it into the movie and when he spoke in the movie it was actually his son saying those lines and then they just overlayed his voice over his sons please let me know what you think
Hey, Liv. Love your reactions and follow. Have a few Tom Cruise suggestions for you to watch.
Early Tom in RISKY BUSINESS,
A FEW GOOD MEN,
and RAIN MAN. Enjoy.
Best movie I have watched after Avengers endgame and Batman waiting for next John wick.
Mach 1 is the speed of sound. Anything passed that is that x the speed of sound. So Mach 10 is 10x the speed of sound
Lol "is he going faster than the speed of sound?"
Well mach 10 is 10 x the speed of sound. So yes.
Mach 1 is the speed of sound. So Mach 10 is 10 times the speed of sound.
They are making a Top Gun 3. 😆 Great Review!
2:37 Ofcourse, He is going 10 times the speed of sound….😅
The speed of sound is mach 1.
Mach 10 is a type of speed
Mach 10 = 10×the speed of sound. 10×750= 7,500 mph. Roughly... Been 30 years. I imagine "Maverick " had plenty of girlfriends in that time. Generally, as I understand it, you earn a call sign. Who awards it is unclear to me. Your peers would be my guess.
