This works so well because the sequel takes place 35 years after the original. If this had been done 5 years the first one, instead of nostalgia, people would’ve felt like they were just copying the first one.
My favorite fun facts about the movie: ALL of actors actually rode in F-18s while filming (they were not allowed to handle the controls, obviously), so all of their reactions to aircraft movements and G-forces is 100% real. Tom Cruise is a pilot in real life and OWNS the P-51 in the movie. He actually flew it with Jennifer Connelly for the closing scene!

Penny Benjamin is mentioned in the first movie during the chew out scene on the carrier, when his commander reads him the riot act, including flying over an Admiral Daughters house. The bar that they show was built just for the movie on North Island Naval Air Station, in Coronado, CA. They bulldozed it down after filming with most of the props still inside! The F-14 Tomcat fighter was borrowed from the San Diego Air and Space Museum and is currently sitting at their Annex at Gillespie Field, east of San Diego. Just some crazy local facts! Glad you loved it!
Maverick didn't fly over Penny's house, he "flew over" her. As Stinger says: "with a history of high speed passes over five air control towers, and one admiral's daughter!" Carol also refers to her in the diner scene "Gpose told me all about that time the you went ballistic with Penny Benjamin"

I started the movie with a smile on my face and ended it with a tear in my eye. And in between I went through all other sorts of emotions. That’s what makes a great movie, no matter which genre.
This movie reminds me of the time when you could finish work on EVERY Friday night, pick up your partner, head to the movies, see something new and leave grinning ear to ear having just had the best time ever. Obvious technical improvements but there is nothing here we haven't seen before its just done in such a crowd pleasingly way I enjoyed every damn minute of it. It's success and popularity is well deserved, I do hope Hollywood takes note before it just destroys itself. Great reaction Shanelle, your emotional involvement and love of cinema here is infectious, see this is what film can do. Shame it doesn't much anymore. Great movie, I grinned the entire time.
Well, there was *something* we haven't seen before- the actors in the cockpit in real flight fighting real G's. In the first movie they had do do all those shots with green screen.
@@solicitr666 Very true, but that wasn't really my point. Real or green screen the end goal to serve the plot remains the same. It does look fantastic though.
I saw this in theaters 5 times! One of the best IMAX experiences ever! Also the rarest thing in movies where the sequel is better than the first one! Great reaction!
Girl! Great reaction! One of the most amazing movies ever. The opening…gave me goosebumps. Disbelief. I knew I was in for a ride. Saw it at the theatre at an IMAX screen.
To be fair, nobody had lost that loving feeling in this movie. 🤣 The amount of nostalgia was just right, glad they resisted going overboard with it. But where they used it, they made it count.
Right movie at the right time. Just when I think we all wanted just a fun movie with enough call-backs. And great reaction Shanelle! Had SO much fun watching you react to this one.
The fact that the actors actually flew in the jets and weren't treated with kid gloves by the Navy pilots who flew them, is beyond awesome and took the movie to a whole other level.
Paid to watch this in theaters 5 times. Watching it on a 50-inch TV screen doesn't do it justice. It's not just nostalgia, or character driven emotions. But the feeling of being with them in the cockpit was part of the experience. At least for me. The original did the best with what they had at the time, and it was great. This elevated it to the next level, and is truly a theatrical blockbuster in every sense of the term.
The line is “He’s the fastest man alive.” Not “He’s the fastest man in the world”. Also, having coffee spilled during the fly-by - No. Nostalgia works when you understand where the line is. That’s going over it.
I am working on my pilot license right now and just flew today. I remember watching the first movie as a kid and just falling in love with the thought of flying. It took me several years, but I’m finally doing it. I’ve been loving your reactions! Glad you are getting to enjoy all my favorites!
Saw the first one in theater at college. Took my daughter, a cinematographer, to this one the only way to see it…IMAX!! Epic movie experience. This was not a movie but a film. And this film deserves IMAX.
There are SO many good things about this movie - but one of my favourite is actually how they portrayed the relationship between Pete and Penny. In every scene they're together, they make us believe they really have a long history together, they know and genuinely like each other, real, mature affection, not just teenage puppy love.
Kosinski knows his wide angle shots. It was clear from his first film with TOm Cruise: Oblivion but man, he takes the shots next level. Darkstar sequence is such amazing scene with breath taking shots.... And the wide scene where all the F-18's are doing flares and sams explode...
I wasn't originally interested in seeing this movie- my family begged me to go with them opening weekend and man it re-ignited my love of film. I saw it 3x at the theater and bought it the day it was released on digital. I also went back and watched Tom Cruise's filmography which has been fun, I have a few films left for that. As far as cinematography goes I highly recommend Oblivion, the shots are absolutely stunning.
FYI: the film is back in theaters until December 15. If you haven't seen it on the big screen, then find it in the largest format available to you, and watch it. This film calls for it to be experienced in movie theaters. Finally, women were first allowed to fly U.S. combat aircraft in 1993. The original film was released in 1986. Enjoyed your reaction.
This is one of the few movies I truly believe was made for and should be seen for the first time in a theater. The sound alone is incredible. I saw it in IMAX and it was INCREDIBLE. Fantastic movie though. Absolutely.
I saw this in IMAX when it was released, having seen the original when it was released as a kid and then many times since. I was giddy as a young boy during this; they did everything to a perfect T without overdoing the nostalgia (like they didn't cram it down your throat). Seeing this on a big screen and big sound was totally worth it.
Saw it in Imax and loved every second of it. It was a great sequel! There were so many great call backs to the first film. Its so well done and like you said it looks stunning.
I saw this in the Theater in 1986, I'm Cruise's age. I love Top Gun, but this one really blew me away, absolutely love it! My new favorite. I saw it in the Theater 3 times.
So nice to see you enjoyed this movie as much as I, and so many other people, did. This is a truly great movie. No politics, just a wonderfully nostalgic sequel that is truly entertaining. This movie is a great example of how good movies used to be. Thanks for sharing you reactions and thoughts on this great movie.
It's a PERFECT sequel considering it's 30 freaking years after the first movie. If I had a minor nitpick wish list, I could've gone for a few more cameos from the first movie's Top Gun graduating class. The actors who played Slider, Wolfman and Hollywood are still around. Maybe you see them at Iceman's funeral. Especially Slider who was Iceman's RIO and best friend in the first movie. Would Tim Robbins want to make a cameo as Merlin? Heck, Tom Skerritt is still alive at 89. Maybe you have a scene where Mav goes to visit a retired Viper at his house for advice.
This movie was so awesome. Felt like I was in a fighter jet while watching this. And then there was the nostalgia factor of the original. 40 years old will do that to ya!
I loved that in Maverick and the original we start with showing some love for the ground crews, who don't get as much attention as they deserve in movies or the real world. Also, if Maverick had Warlock at his side, pointing out when not to answer the rhetorical questions from superior officers, he probably would be an Admiral already.
Seeing it in theaters was epic. I went alone but the theater was packed with older people. It was so good we all applauded at the end with a standing ovation.
To think this movie stayed shelved for almost 3 years. Crews knew the best experience for this move would be in the theatres, and he was right. I saw in theaters and it was the most amazing movie experience so far this year.
22:35 The aircraft is limited in how much g it can take without damaging the frame. If there was a g force more than the limit, it needs to be inspected before it can fly again. If the g force was way to much, you bend literally the frame and it can never be flown again.
Honestly, this video is almost as good as the movie. And the movie can only be described as phenomenal! Your reaction and this whole video was awesome! Your energy throughout. Your excitement when it was time to get excited and genuine emotion at the end. You’re beautiful and fun and spot on with this whole reaction. You had me locked in the entire time.
I've been a fan of the original since it came out and this became my most anticipated film since watching the trailer hit. My expectations were blown out of the water with this masterpiece. I watched it several times in theater: in true IMAX, in Dolby, and once in a regular theater. Easily my top movie of the year.
I suspect that I will always love the original more (I was thirteen when it came out, and that kind of nostalgia is hard to beat), but this is an objectively better movie.
No, the original opening text DID NOT say "men and women" it only said "men". Back then female aviators did not fly combat aircraft. It wasn't until 1994 that Lt. Kara Hultgreen became the US Navy's first female carrier-based fighter pilot. Sadly, she perished later that same year in a plane crash. She is buried at Arlington.
The P-51 Mustang at the end is actually Tom's own plane and it was him flying it there as well. He even took James Corvin up in it during his show a while back.
When you said "really" when it was mentioned that F-18 might never fly again, yes that's true. You can put so much G on an airframe that you literally bend it. Several museums around have gotten aircraft because they were subjected to forces beyond their maximum, rendering them unairworthy and unrepairable.
3:02 - Hearing that music makes me wonder if they got Harold Faltermeyer and Steve Stevens to do any re-working of the themes they originally made, or Giorgio Moroder for the rest of the score/songs.
Yes, when you pull too many "G's" it will stress the airframe...it can fly but you never really know if you pull up to hard if the wings don't break off or fold in half......
I saw the original in the theater when I was 20. At Fathers Day this year I asked my 80 year old parents if they wanted to see this sequel, and both said yes immediately. They had gone to see it way back when as well, which surprised me since they didn't go to many movies. So for a Fathers Day gift I took them to see Maverick in a theater. We all loved it. Turned out to be the last movie my Dad would see on a big screen, he passed about a month ago. But that afternoon, we all felt 35 years younger, and bitched about Tom Cruise never aging. :)
Shan's reaction was exactly the same as mine. The nostalgia of a really well written sequel that calls back to the first movie with elements that remind you the first movie happened. Then there was the cinematography. If you can take any frame of the movie and turn it into a perfectly professional shot photograph, the movie it's a masterpiece of cinematographical art. It's all in the lighting. Shan understands that. Good story. Good characters. Good dialogue, Good framing. Good lighting. Good everything makes good tears of joy. 8-)
Before there were DVDs, there were 12 inch laser disks. This movie was the movie to have on laser disk and we must’ve watched it 1000 times, In college. Naturally, the first two minutes of this movie with the throwback song and light deck operations now involving F 18 eagles, brought out a lot of emotions. A friend from college still flies F18s, callsign Grinch.
A little trivia. If you remember the line about Maverick's faux pas ended with "..aaaand one low pass over an admirals daughter." He says wistfully, "Penny Benjamin." When "Top Gun" came out there when no women were fighter pilots. The first female Naval aviator actually flew F-14's, she died in a carrier accident. Edit: The actors did _NOT_ fly F/A-18s but they did all fly in the back of F/A-18Fs and all of their flying scenes were really pulling Gs and so on.
This is what happens when Producers and Directors listen to the fans and put love, thought and care into it! Yes! It DOES pay off! Studio Execs, take note!
Imagine if you had waited 36 years for this. I did the wait, and Iceman's death was pretty crushing. I didn't even like Iceman that much in the first movie, but for those who saw it back in 1986, almost everything in this movie is filled with nostalgia and emotion. So much for escapism.
Yay, I'm so glad you finally watched and reacted to this movie! Most TH-camrs jumped on this movie and posted their reactions within days of its release, so I saw everyone's videos a couple of months ago. Since then, I've seen the movie 5 times at the theater and once at home. Gladly watching your reaction with all the emotion. It brings me back to the first time I saw it. I cried along with you. If they bring this back to cinemas and you ever get a chance to see this on the big screen, PLEASE do it!
So happy you got to finally see this. There's a ton of behind the scenes stuff on YT talking about the production that I think you would love to dig into on your own. As for the movie and story telling in this, I appreciate how there is this constant theme with Maverick about how he's still fighting the scars from the first movie; "don't tell me, tell it to his family", "an explanation that his family will accept", and teach them "how to come home. And how to come home sir." You also have the theme of finding your place in the world as time moves on and the devaluing of your skill... which of course is something Tom Cruise I'm sure is fighting against as an actor. So much good stuff about this movie.
Have to admit, your reaction to this movie earned a sub. Your excitement, emotion and reverence for the original was incredible. Can't wait to watch your other reactions. Well, done, Shanelle. You have a new fan. Cute too, by the way. From a former photographer's perspective, you have an incredible jawline and a charming smile.
Shanelle spoke this movie into existence haha, from the first scenes. It really had no business being as good as it was, the cinematography was utterly beautiful... it was so well directed and shot. And they didn't use any crazy lenses, atleast for the romance shots haha, pretty standard Sigmas and Fujinons. The cockpit setup however was pretty crazy as the modified Venice cameras had to be incredibly compact to fit without impeding the ejection process. And the editing as well, just a super lean and tight movie, but still very well written and acted. Definitely one of the best sequels of all time. Loved the reaction!

I started the movie with a smile on my face and ended it with a tear in my eye. And in between I went through all other sorts of emotions. That’s what makes a great movie, no matter which genre.
Top Gun Maverick, earning its rightful place along The Godfather II, The Empire Strikes Back, Aliens and T2 as one of the greatest sequels ever made.
Don't forget Superman 2
Don't forget Superman 2
Seeing this in theaters was just amazing.
The amount of nostalgia was just right, glad they resisted going overboard with it. But where they used it, they made it count.
This was my best movie going experience since NWH. I loved how it felt so timeless yet also called back to the original 💛
What is NWH please?
@@donnabruhn6907 Spiderman No Way Home
Right movie at the right time. Just when I think we all wanted just a fun movie with enough call-backs. And great reaction Shanelle! Had SO much fun watching you react to this one.
yay thanks!!
True.. Very True
Val Kilmer filmed an amazing autobiographical documentary called Val that, frankly, is as good as anything I've seen him in. You'd love it.
Best movie in the history of ever!
I could watch this every day for the rest of my life. And it would never get old.
Saw it in Imax and loved every second of it. It was a great sequel! There were so many great call backs to the first film. Its so well done and like you said it looks stunning.
Penny Benjamin was mentioned in the first movie as "the admiral's daughter"... Your red eyes made this reaction even more stellar, thanks Shan! :)
This movie was AMAZING in IMAX. The sound. Ohhhh just everything.
36 to be exact...Almost 4 decades. 🤷
Also, if Maverick had Warlock at his side, pointing out when not to answer the rhetorical questions from superior officers, he probably would be an Admiral already.
he didnt want to be an admiral anyway - he prefers to fly and once you get to flag rank your not flying anymore
One of the best sequels of all time!
True.. Very True
Penny has a bar, sailboat, Porsche and she's an Admirals daughter! Perfect 🥰
I never expected top gun to make me cry either. In the theater all the Bros has tears lol
@--shanellRiccio go away fake "shanelle"
22:35 The aircraft is limited in how much g it can take without damaging the frame. If there was a g force more than the limit, it needs to be inspected before it can fly again. If the g force was way to much, you bend literally the frame and it can never be flown again.
The moment Coyote pulled up from that dive, was awesome in the theater
I love this movie!! I got emotional when the trailer came out. Literal tears.
Didn't they give him the call sign "Butterball" or something?
When you said "really" when it was mentioned that F-18 might never fly again, yes that's true. You can put so much G on an airframe that you literally bend it. Several museums around have gotten aircraft because they were subjected to forces beyond their maximum, rendering them unairworthy and unrepairable.
3:02 - Hearing that music makes me wonder if they got Harold Faltermeyer and Steve Stevens to do any re-working of the themes they originally made, or Giorgio Moroder for the rest of the score/songs.
Love your reaction! This movie gives you everything you ever wanted in a sequel! So glad you enjoyed it. And totally agree, beautifully shot👍🏻
Sorry about your Father, at least you’ll always have those memories.
At the end, that P51 Mustang was Tom Cruise's plane, and he was flying it (he has been a pilot since '94)
Shan's reaction was exactly the same as mine.
I love Warlock’s responses. “They’re called ‘orders,’ Maverick.” “I think the Admiral’s asking a rhetorical question, Captain” 😂
There is a reason the cinematography was so great in this movie since most of the flying sequences were shot for real in flight
yeah so insane to find that out!!
A little trivia. If you remember the line about Maverick's faux pas ended with "..aaaand one low pass over an admirals daughter." He says wistfully, "Penny Benjamin."
When "Top Gun" came out there when no women were fighter pilots. The first female Naval aviator actually flew F-14's, she died in a carrier accident.
Edit: The actors did _NOT_ fly F/A-18s but they did all fly in the back of F/A-18Fs and all of their flying scenes were really pulling Gs and so on.
I honestly kinda regret not seeing this on the big screen. Great movie !
Also, the Navy allowed TC six catapult launches off the carrier and seeing this movie in IMAX was amazing!
"Stop trying to make fetch happen." 🤣🤣🤣
I worked on this film!!! It was beyond exciting being a part of something so special!!!
I keep wondering why they used the wrong sound for the F-14 and SU-57 cannons. The real sound of the f-14's cannon was used in "Final Countdown".
And how to come home sir."
You also have the theme of finding your place in the world as time moves on and the devaluing of your skill... which of course is something Tom Cruise I'm sure is fighting against as an actor.
By far the best movie of the year by a nautical mile. Probably the best movie of the decade.
As a former Army attack helicopter pilot with combat experience who now flies jets, great reaction, Miss!
29:31 - You got it. the StarWars references are there. Also in the 1986 movie - the way the dogfights were shot.
