  • In this video, Dr. Tracey Marks provides an update on ketamine's use in treating depression, focusing on its mechanism as an NMDA receptor antagonist and role in neuroplasticity. She discusses the FDA approval of Spravato, a ketamine nasal spray, and compares its effectiveness with quetiapine. The video also explores the emerging role of ketamine injections and the continued success of intravenous ketamine, highlighting their potential in mental health treatment, especially for treatment-resistant depression.

As I watched this video I became very emotional. I think of my friends Joe, Richie, Miranda, Hugh, Dean, Lydia and Gary. They did not make it through their depressions. They're spoken about in hushed tones because people still don't appreciate that Depression can be as terminal as heart disease and cancer. This video gives me such hope - followed a terrible sadness for those who didn't live to have the options we are now discovering. I hope in my heart that one day depression will be, if not totally eradicated, something that can have as little impact on life as the common cold.

I’m so very sorry for your loss of 7 friends. That is just beyond awful. I’ve battled with depression too. I know the feeling of hopelessness in trying to get out from under the cold wet wool blanket (how I pictured depression). And yeah, it doesn’t matter how much you believe in God or how much scripture you read or how much scripture other people (well meaning yet self righteous & ignorant) shove at you, the depression just does NOT go away! But God has used my depression to show me how I must take steps to get help for myself, do the hard work of dealing with past trauma and accept His healing. It’s been a long process. After a couple decades it turns out I actually have ADHD, which is often misdiagnosed as depression,-especially in women! Now I’m taking Strattera and getting therapy. I still have times of feeling down but not like when I was younger. It’s a matter of getting the right chemicals to the right places in the brain. I wish you much healing. And don’t let people who just quote scripture without deep understanding turn you off to who God really is! ❤

So for all the people who jumped on Matthew Perry saying that "he wasn't sober" because he was using Ketamine should educate themselves before they all pile on a man who had fought so hard to conquer his addictions.
On top of battling his own addictions, he still managed to help so many other people with their own additions.

I have to sign up for 1d inpatient and off-label use here (I´m not from USA). 2019 FDA approval of Nose Spray really was a game changer for depression Treatments in EU! I got my first infusions back then in 2019, but the dosis was pretty unkown. So we experamenting with a 3x lower dose than I´m getting today. It didn´t worked out for me the way it does today. I´m very happy that it´s possible now to get rid of the heavy depression symptoms! For me 1 infusion last for 4 weeks and then it slowly come back. But let´s say about 1 week of depression and then 3 days of recovery from infusion is totally worth the ~90% very good time I have! Before my docs and me tried Ketamine I was on 50+ different pills (of course not at the same time, but up to 8 different a day) and now I´m at 0 pills since a month.

I am at least attempting to go legit and am currently paying a hefty out-of-pocket amount to a licensed anesthesiologist for ketamine infusions and it's easily the second-best horse-related medications I've ever had (just kidding, obviously).
But I'm glad there are people out there promoting this model of "take this substance because it'll make you feel good *after* you're no longer under the influence" instead of "take this substance that, if taken long enough, will ensure that you're a repeat-customer--or else."

Yepp, self medicating is so broad but in a world where SSRIS antipsychotics and benzos are the best thing around it seems, self medication starts to sound like it could be better.
I was on Zoloft for a while and never could remember to take it (adhd as well) and it just seemed like a losing battle. Now I’m self medicating with psilocybin/shrooms and a single dose lasts up to a month, some benefits indefinitely.
But these revelations in my own self care are allllways met with quiet, under-the-table type reactions from medical or psych professionals.

I can't help wondering if people who are appear to be resistant to antidepressants are just people who have no idea they have ADHD, because i know several people who have no idea and refuse to even entertain the possibility, and yet they have anxiety and depression, that never goes away.
I personally think that everyone who has any signs of depression should always be assessed for ADHD aswell as standard procedure.
Because the amount of people who must be miss-diagnosed or completely overlooked with ADHD, could be huge, because of this problem.

I began ketamine, once a week at the lowest dose, held under the tongue until absorbed. Mango flavor! I too have had a response to Ketamine that knocks the ball out of the park. I remain on my usual anti-anxiety and anti-depression medications, but ketamine is just incredible. Dr. Marks did not mention the lozenge dosing but I'm glad it exists. You are not supposed to drive after the treatment, and that would be a handicap for me. Lying on my couch when my husband is at home is just perfect, with no issue of driving. I have heard phrases come into my head during the treatment that are very uplifting and positive. And I am the author of those phrases, or my subconscious is. With this dosing, I have about 3-4 days of positivity with no anxiety or depression. This is the result of the least amount of dosage strength! I think it is a miracle.

I am one of those labelled as "Treatment Resistant." Over the past 10-15 years of Major Despressive Disorder I've trialed 8 different SSRI's. The only one that 'remotely' gave me some results was Cymbalta -- however, it had one of the highest weight gain out of all of them and I had to stop the medication as I was reaching over 200 lbs (I am 5'9" and small build and could barely tie my own shoes).
I feel so defeated because I know there are new options for TRD but nobody wants to cover it. My depression got so bad I had to go on medical disability. Therefore, Medicare barely covers anything. I want there to be hope for me, but I don't think it will come in time for me to benefit from it.

It was like a nightmare every session (almost 4 hours each one). At the end of session i started to talk with a different accent for hours. And a lot of nausea makes me vomit a lot too. So i couldnt eat anything in the day of infusions and even tough i keep vomiting water or what was in my stomach. I tried use medications for this side effect but none worked. In my infusion, before i took bromoprida to help it secondary effects. But stills didnt work. And the effect of ketamin just take about 2 weeks. After that time i needed a new infusion. I had to stop because I was felling really bad and started a MAOI. I took the MAOI for one year and after the fear of drug interaction i tried to use a combination between fluoxetine, bupropion and quetiapine. It worked hopefully. Has Ketamine been compared to any of the standard antidepressants like say Zoloft, Lexapro, Prozac, Effexor, Cymbalta, Nardil or Parnate?
Also, I've been depressed for a long time. It never changes. It's caused by 40 years of anxiety and OCD, and mostly manifests as anhedonia, not sadness or suicidality. Does Ketamine help anhedonia?

I seem to remember hearing months at least. I can tell you a single ayahuasca session provided benefits still apparent 10 years after the fact.
These compounds challenge the idea that depression is all about simply inadequate levels of serotonin or NE in the synaptic space. It's thought that psilocybin and other entheogens may work by breaking the brain out of repetitive and unhelpful patterns of activity.
I can say with ayahuasca in particular that it wasn't as simple as "curing" a depression. What it did for me was to break me out of the thought patterns that I took for granted as "the way things are" and brought me face to face with a lot of traumas and negative baggage I had stuffed down for a lifetime. You face your personal shadows and horrors with aya, and it's hard to bear, but not more than you can bear. Kind of like lancing a boil so that healing can begin.
I describe it as a full death and rebirth experience. The thing you take for granted as "the real you" dies over the course of that night, but it's necessary for some of those things to die. What's left is reassembled and re-integrated piece by peace and born literally into the light of the new day and a lot of hope. It's like 10 years of therapy in one night. You still have to do the work afterward though. Aya can show you some truths but its up to you to recognize and implement them into your life.

My doctor gave me Seroquel as a mood stabilizer for my bipolar depression. This is my second go round I had to stop because I’m over weight again and my A1c is high. Would ketamine work for bipolar depression? I have to stop Seroquel.

Hi, Dr. Thank you for doing this. I've been talking quetiapine for 14 years for severe insomnia, 100 mg alone with lorazepam 2 mg. The Dr gave quetiapine in order to reduce lorazepam, because I was taking 4 mg, the only way I could sleep. Besides, I am bipolar. My question is: can I take ketamine every night? If not, it won't be helpful in my case. Thanks!

Any chance there will be a RCT between Spravato and infusions? Or between ketamine and TMS? Sign me up!

Psychedelics are just an exceptional mental health breakthrough. It's quite fascinating how effective they are against depression and anxiety. Saved my life.

Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He is 59 & has so many mental health issues plus probable CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac.
He's constantly talking about killing someone.
He's violent. Anyone reading this Familiar w/ BPD know if it is common for an obsession with violence.

Thank you for this! Do you know about the FDA approving it for bipolar? I have bipolar 2 and BPD and was trying to get into a TMS program, but none in my area will take me because it is still off label for bipolar. I'm wondering if I'll run into the same thing with ketamine.

@@marleyhill34 I am also in therapy and use DBT, but I also have bipolar which in my case needs medication. Medication for me has helped stabilize me enough that I'm able to implement my skills; without it I barely function much less use skills.

I appreciate the information and e.ducation
But to me all this talk about research on drugs and very little about accessibility through an adequate mentality for providing for all only highlights the fact that the mentally ill are a prime example of how people who are ill cannot perform well enough to work or even live independantly without significant care and support until they are at least moderately healed.
    Thanks again.

I am a therapist who has a client who previously underwent treatment with Ketamine. The effect it had on her was problematic. Her nervous system went into overdrive and she is triggered easily by sensory experiences. Has anyone else heard of this or know of any ways to help her move back to baseline? It has been two years since her Ketamine treatment ended, and she continues to suffer.

  • @adamloepker8057
    @adamloepker8057 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Ketamine also modulates kapa-opioid receptors to make natural opiates more potent in the body for several days after use (and can make some opiate drug doses toxic because of this)

      @nigtendos 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@kenofken9458 I wouldn't think so, but sometimes the dissociation effects last longer than expected and I don't interact too well with the environment. For example I feel like when I go for a walk, I'm in a movie. But it's a minor temporary side effect of course.
