      Not an herb but add Magnesium to the list. 500-800mg/day of Mg Citrate works better than anything else I've ever tried for depression. Dr. Tracey already made a video on it, and that single video could have possibly saved my life.

    I've taken St John's wort for decades now. Tried to wean off recently just to see how I would do since I haven't been depressed in some time, but after 1 week of just reducing the dosage, I woke up with major anxiety. I'd forgotten, this is how I used to feel every morning before St. John's. So I still need it to feel normal, but it works, and it works long term for me. Love this topic! I did integrate turmeric into my diet since your last video and have been loving it. I like this theme also because I don't think I ever have been severely depressed, but the blues and anxiety that come and go can be debilitating even when they're mild. So natural solutions that help to stimulate the body and don't have collateral effects (cold showers, walks, exercise, but also diet) are oh so valuable!! It also helps when trying to help someone who's low. Feeding someone rich "antidepressant" foods like those is a such loving demonstration of care!

    About 4 years ago, I told my psychiatrist that I wanted to try alternatives for treating my mental health (BPD, MDD, PMDD, PME and ADHD) She was nervous, but helped me safely wean off psychiatric medicine that I'd been taking for 15 years (tried so many different medications and I never felt improvement). My symptoms are more improved on Mediterranean diet, and my top 3 for depression are albizia julibrissin (this is the only one to help the severity of my depression), butterfly pea flower, and lavender. I would not be here without albizia julibrissin, I was getting so tired of fighting to stay alive. Thank God for my psychiatrist helping me get off those meds. Haven't attempted since 2018, haven't self harmed in a few years, and I am holding a job for the first time, got my driver's license and am going to school again. I haven't tried st John's wort, feel nervous to, but I add turmeric to my anti inflammatory drink every morning to help with neuropathy, good stuff. Great video, im so glad there are open minded professionals like you out there.

      i am currently in a situation where the medicines ive been taking for 8 years didnt help because no one cared enough to go to the root of my problem. i got extremely burnt out which doesnt seem like normal burnout, quit college, basically never go outside because my anxiety has skyrocketed, i stopped my benzos and had to go through withdrawals for a while, it's eased a little bit now. but i would much rather not be on prescription medicines because it internally made me feel horrible. im on the path of finding herbs that actualy help me, i have no guidance in this aspect right now. im starting to lose hope because none of the herbs are providing me any strong sense of relief for a chronic condition like mine and im nervous to try st johns wort again because the cycle of getting disappointed over and over again is tiring me. herbs are not a quick fix, but i really want to see some relief in sight.

We thought we were going ing to lose him before x- mass … but he hung on until yesterday …we had to get him euthanised . He was in too much pain 💔. I can’t believe how much it hurts .
    People keep saying the typical ….oh well he’s free now ,blah blah blah … he,s free now / he’s in a better place blah blah blah …IT DOSE NOT HELP . Just be there for the person . Empathise with them .. let them cry …hug them if it feels right . THE REALITY IS 👉 there are no words 👈 Just empathise and be there … if you can . From family members and friends who have taken their own lives …. You don’t need to fill the empty space with words - but don’t stop being their for those people …..they feel empty and isolated already👉don’t stop visiting people because YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE and don’t know what to say …. 👉👉JUST BE THERE 👈 .

I call tending to my community garden plot, along the bay off of Lake Ontario, in this lovely underused green space no less, "going to church". I have certain calming plants like lavender and lemon balm, chamomile, the usual suspects. It's wonderful to learn more about how the plants you mention act on the body. I know some medical professionals dont believe in it but I feel like its important to note that one shouldn't combine st. john's wort with SSRI's and many other meds/supplements that increase serotonin levels because of the risk of serotonin syndrome which apparently can be fatal. At least from what Ive read, dont know how common serotonin syndrome is.

    • @BeingBetter
      @BeingBetter ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that's true, and it can occur from combining any serotonin acting substances together. Serotonin syndrome is on a spectrum: it can be mild or can be life threatening. I've had moderate serotonin syndrome before from combining too many supplements and meds.

    • @virginiamontaldo440
      @virginiamontaldo440 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very true, st john's wort should NEVER be taken together with SSRIs and even if you discontinue them you should wait at least 2 weeks for your body to really flush the SSRIs out or you risk serotonergic syndrome.

    • @StainsStainsStains
      @StainsStainsStains ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BeingBetter Hmm. I didnt know you could have mild cases of serotonin syndrome, I assumed it was relatively the same across the board and across individuals but I guess it makes sense given the many different variables at play. Glad you're ok though.

      @StainsStainsStains ปีที่แล้ว

      @@virginiamontaldo440 but what if you're taking st. john's wort and get prescribed an ssri? Does it take the same amount of time to (for lack of a better word) "detox" from st. jons wort?

    • @virginiamontaldo440
      @virginiamontaldo440 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StainsStainsStains I don't know. St John's wort is not toxic though (unlike SSRIs, who gave me intoxication in the long term) and it works by a different mode of action. It can give photosensitivity to some people as far as I know. In doubt, consult a herbal doctor who is also knowledgeable on antidepressants. If you got prescribed st john's wort by a herbal doctor he/she probably knows what you should be doing in this case.

I believe potency and active constituents are key to people being able to notice a difference. After seeing how taking even the same herbs or mushrooms from several other sources didn't really seem to help unless I took a LOT extra, which became quite expensive and more of a hassle in my routine to where I'd forget to take them at all.

    1. Lemon balm herb worked for me when I tried it for moderate depression. It is stated as being good for anxiety and depression.
    2. Hyperforin in St John's Wort is good for mood too not just hypericin. Why do so many people leave that out? Plus it may contain some Gaba too which is calming.
    3. There are some studies showing higher doses of St Johns Wort up to 2700mg a day not standard 900mg can be helpful for moderate and in some cases severe depression.
    I hope they study a variety of doses in many studies when testing St John's Wort especially for moderate to severe depression.
    4. Gingko Biloba also worked for my moderate depression. There are some studies showing it is good for depression in elderly.
    I think they need to get a wriggle on and study it more thoroughly in other age groups.

    I made the mistake of taking st. John's wort in the summer while doing a door to door job. I had major photosensitivity reaction on all the places my skin wash showing, luckily I wore a hat, and capri pants. It was horrible my skin swelled up and I went to a doctor who gave me two rounds of Prednisone, which I will also never take again. Destroyed my adrenals and gave me intense nighttime drooling, like intense. I'd wake up soaked. I also had acne eruptions on my arms for years after.
    I know more now but still not sure how to deal with that, maybe castor oil to draw it out.

    As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner: PLEASE tell your prescriber if you are taking, or start taking, St John’s Wort (as well as any other supplement) because it may impact what we prescribe to keep you safe. As Dr Marks briefly mentioned, this combined with other prescribed medications can raise serotonin to dangerous levels. SSRIs are the more obvious one, but many other psychiatric medications also raise serotonin levels.
