When Robin Williams passed, Twitter was full of people quoting lines from his movies, but by far the most common was this. "Oh Captain, my Captain." So heartbreaking.

The day I found out on the news. I stood on my chair pointed towards the t v and said "o Captain my Captain"
Fortunately, Neil recovered from the gunshot wound and went on to combine his life's ambition with his father's wishes by playing a doctor on the TV series *House.*
This is a beautiful headcannon and I will choose to believe this as well 😀

I was so crushed by Neils death for so many years that watching House truly was therapeutic.
Originally Cameron was supposed to get up on his table as well but the kid playing him opposed it. He said it wasn't in his character, and that he had remained a conformist and loyal to the school system. The director agreed and Cameron stays in his seat.

I've watched 2 or 3 acted versions of Midsummer's Night's Dream, and THIS version, which is just a few scenes for this movie, THIS the version I dearly wished had might have been an extra in the blueray disc, I would have LOVED that.
Perhaps then to me the fey might have some across as mischievous to me rather than mean spirited...
never ever apologize for crying at any well written script. if it doesn't make you cry it's not done well. I've seen this movie 10 plus times and I still cry. No apologies.

I've seen this movie every year since 1989 and I still cry. Anyone who doesn't is dead inside. One of the most emotionally powerful movies ever.
The kids standing on their desks at the end as their weaker-willed classmates remain seated with their head in their hands is one of the most powerful shots of the 1980's in cinema IMHO.
Still one of the strongest ending in movie history.

The whole scene leading to Neil’s death is just so brilliantly done with the cinematography and lighting. I remember watching this for the first time and I was shivering because I knew what was coming, and I didn’t want to believe it, but it was inevitable. Neal’s dream died as soon as his father showed up to witness the monologue that he performed for him.
The irony is that the play is called “A Midsummer’s Dream” and it’s performed during winter. The ending monologue tells the audience that the events that occurred are nothing but a dream and that it’s time to return to reality and carry on with our lives. This was Neal’s moment to tell his father what he truly felt. But instead, this is all that Mr. Perry saw. After that, it was over. It was pointless for Neil to tell him how he felt, in his office, where Mr. Perry asserts his dominance. Neil’s mind, body, and spirit are utterly shattered by the power that Mr. Perry presents. What’s even more heartbreaking is that Mrs. Perry didn’t even comfort his son, as if not even they connected or were able to communicate each other’s struggles. How she is unable to do anything about it. It’s such a hopeless and devastating moment.
The symbolism of his death is even more devastating. How he wears his costume, how he gets the last taste of the life he dreamed of. The life he has barely begun to live. Now gone forever, as he dies by the hands of his father’s gun. Symbolizing that his father killed him, and his hopes and dreams with it.
What’s even more heartbreaking is that Todd finally finds his Barbaric “Yawp”, as he screamed the name of his best friend. How he, unlike the others, was letting the cold hit him at full force.

For me it was when in the minute 4:19 , Keating is saying "all of us one day is going to stop breathing, turn cold and die" and the camera shows Neil. I even see the "turn cold" in the part where Neil opens the window and lets the cold breeze arrive to him
The parents reaction to finding Neil is so real, and visceral. Awakenings with Williams and Deniro is an emotional movie too. Based on a true story.

I haven’t heard of Awakenings but I’ll add it to my list… I’ll bring the tissues this time!

Christopher Reeve was Robin Williams close friend and was possibly the "Keating" in Robin's life that inspired him. When the movie premiered Reeve snuck into some theatres with the writer of DPS (Schulman) and in one they just caught the end with the students getting up on their desks, and the audience was giving a standing ovation. Tom Schulman looked across and Christopher Reeve had tears streaming down his face, he was so happy for Robin in that moment.
So you're in good company with a movie that made Superman cry.

@@EveReacts They were best friends since College when they were roommates. Godfather's to each others kids. Robin was the first person at Chris's bedside when he broke his neck. Chris said when he first woke up from his accident and realized he was paralyzed he got so depressed and didn't know what he was going to do. Then a guy came into his room dressed as in surgical gown, mask, hat, dancing around his bed, ranting in a crazy russian accent. Chris saw that it was Robin and started to laugh. Robin raised Chris spirits to the point that Chris said to himself, "I'm going to make this better and learn to walk again. Robin payed most of Chris's Hospital bills. Chris lived longer than anyone with his type of injury. In the end Chris started to move his fingers and toes, and could breath on his own for a few hours a day. I like to think if Chris was still here Robin might too.
As much a Robin Williams was known for being a comedian, I never much related to his humor. But in roles like this, he was SO brilliant. He was absolutely amazing in Good Will Hunting too. I wish he had made so many more dramatic movies because he was an incredible talent.
This film in particular definitely made an impact on me when i was 13-14 years old.
It was more than just a story centered around poetry, friendship, etc. but for me, it was about self realization; realizing that I am unique in my own way, even though that in itself is still challenging to this day. Great film!

Yes, me too. I went through puberty with this movie. It really influenced my way of viewing the world.
Same here, I was 13 and this film had a tremendous impact on me, its perhaps my favorite film ever. Neils death was so traumatic that seeming him years later on House was very therapeutic for my soul. I still felt his death 15 years later when I first saw House.
One of my all-time favorite movies. It breaks my heart however seeing Robin crying at Neil’s desk knowing what will happen to Robin later in life. Really sucks.
a beautiful movie. not just the plot, the characters etc, but the aesthetic. the fact that not everybody stood up at the end it makes the movie look more realistic. I watched it months ago and I must admit I'm still not over it, I cried with you haha.

You gotta give it up for Kurtwood Smith (Neil's dad), a great actor who convinces you that his character thinks acting is stupid.
When this came out, new in theaters, this was the movie my now wife and I went to see for a first date.

Reading up a bit on the film, the writer was a guy named Tom Schulman who based it on his own experiences attending a prep school in Tennessee where he had an inspirational English teacher named Samuel Pickering.
I could be wrong but I feel like Todd, the character played by Ethan Hawke, represents Schulman. The last shot of the film is of Todd - and you could imagine he grows up, inspired by Mr. Keating, and becomes a writer and writes about his experiences growing up.
Wow, that is so interesting! I can definitely see him using that as a source of inspiration for the movie. Incredible writing 🙌🏽
This is true. I live in Tennessee. I went to the school the film was based on, Montgomery Bell Academy, an all boys school in Nashville. So this film has always had a special place in my heart.
wonderful reaction - you made me cry along with you!! there's a deleted scene that shows todd helping neil practice his lines by the lake on the night before the play, which is why todd ran there when he heard of neil's death (it was the last time he spoke with him). i love that scene so much because it really shows how strong their friendship was and how passionate and happy neil was about acting. it just makes the ending so much more painful :(

Robert Sean Leonard had such an amazingly expressive face in this film. I don't think he has ever had another role that good.
After I saw this, I had hated Neil's father more than any other movie character ever. Next time that actor showed up in a different movie, I felt a wave of rage; I think it took about three seasons of "That 70's Show' before I could look at him as Red and not the selfish bully that he was in DPS. I know it was the role, not the actor, but it still took me a long time to get over it.
Brilliant. You know what I like about you Eve? You don't 'react' to things, you watch them. It might seem like a small difference. I like it. It's like watching a film WITH someone.
I was 16 when this movie came out in France and wrote a review in the school paper. People clapped at the end of the movie in the theatre. I almost embraced teaching as a career because of it.
Eve [during Midsummer Night's Dream]: "I have no idea what's going on here."
Me: I dated a high school English/theatre teacher for 3 years. Nobody knows what's going on during a high school Shakespeare production.
Also, the younger brother of one of my best high school friends shot himself when he was 16. It wasn't entirely dissimilar to Dead Poets; they were a military family, and he didn't want to serve. His brother, my friend, supported him, but his parents wouldn't hear of it.
This movie is one of my favorite things in this world.
The real Star of this movie is director Peter Weir, Australia's greatest director. Here are 3 of his best that are just as great as DPS. "The Year Of Living Dangerously"(1982)Starring Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver. "Witness"(1985) Starring Harrison Ford, his only Oscar nomination. "The Truman Show"(1998) Starring Jim Carrey, his first serious role.
There’s a hilarious Saturday Night Live sketch that spoofs the O Captain My Captain scene called Farewell Mr Bunting that I couldn’t possibly recommend more to watch and/or react to

Like you, no matter how many times I watch this movie, I cry at the same scenes. It is such a fantastic movie with a powerful message. Not what most people expect from a Robin Williams movie. Favorite movie in the world. It's a poem itself, visually, metaphorically. Everything is placed perfectly and everything has a meaning and what I love is that that meaning can change depending on where you're at life everytime you watch it.
I can't forget the first time I saw it, it's just unforgettable.

In my high school American Literature class, we watched this movie. The poetry book we bought for the class also had a terrible introduction. My teacher said we could rip it out like in Dead Poets Society. We stood on top of our desks when we read the poem “O Captain! My Captain!”.
My high school also had a club called the Living Poets Society, where we got together to write poetry. Sometimes we asked if students in the club wanted to submit their work to the literary magazine on campus.

I remember watching this in a movie theater as a teenager.. most of my teachers watched it too. The atmosphere during the final scene was very special. I remember the tears running down my cheeks 🙂

Tom Schulman who wrote the screenplay based this on some of his school experience and Todd was the guy who represented him at that age. Kurtwood Smith who played the father was asked years later what he made of the film, he said that the father does love his son but it shows in the wrong way, he smothers and controls him. At the premiere Kurtwood Smith took along an old male friend of his whose relationship with his son was just like that he played in the film. The lights went down the film played and when the lights went up hie friend was sobbing, he'd seen himself in the film played out and from that day on he changed his relationship with his son. That's why I act Smith said, plays or movies can and do change lives. It's about as Keating says following your gut your instinct, even in the face of the conformity that tries to tie you down, you must find your voice and use it, even at a price at a cost, it will cause you pain and you will suffer but thats the price we pay for thinking for ourselves and not following the herd. And Robin was genius here, so too the director Peter Weir.
Nice reaction. Love watching people finding out Dead Poets Society for the very first time. This film has the power to change lifes. Fact: When Mr. Keating get into the classroom at the end of the film, the empty desk is Charlie,s for refusing to sign against keating.
oh and a little side note a majority of Robin Williams lines were improvised. not in the script. when they started shooting Robin Williams followed the script and the director didn't feel it was working so he said improvise, so Robin Williams improvised. which is why the tractor said after the movie would not have been the movie it was without Robbins improvisation. I true genius
Wow that makes it even more impressive. I’ve heard that he improvises a lot which I understand for comedy but the fact he also did it for this movie is mind blowing. A true talent 🙏🏽
When I saw this in the movie theater, I loss my breath when he stood on that desk and couldn't breathe throughout that entire scene.
I always love seeing the student that looked like he hardly cared stood up when the others did its speaks volume not only was he affected by the words his teacher told him throughout the year but the memories he has with those around him he never associated with

I can tell you that seeing this in the theater when it came out, the scene where all the boys are standing at the case and Keating is whispering 'Carpe Diem' as the black and white picture of the young men from a hundred years ago is shown was very impactful. It's one of those moments you can't escape because everyone knows it's true.

One of the greatest films ever made a true masterpiece Dead Poets Society directed by Peter Weir starring Robin WIlliams, Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke, Kurtwood Smith and music score by Maurice Jarre. As long as we're doing Robin Williams, have you seen Good Will Hunting? It gets a little precious in places but it's a fine film overall with a VERY affecting performance from Mr. Williams.

Ugh. I just watched it for the first time because it popped up for free on TH-cam. When I was done sobbing over the movie, I got recommended this video by the algorithm. And so I sobbed again ...right along with you. Neil. Poor Neil. Great video, O Captain! My Captain!
I thought Good Will Hunting was Robin Williams' best movie. But now that I've seen this, GWH takes second. DPS is his best movie hands down.

@@EveReacts Don't apologize. Hehe. It's a great thing to feel something that deeply. Why be afraid of admitting it? On the contrary. I am an aspiring writer myself - not of poetry - but fiction in general. If I can ever write something that makes people feel emotions that deeply, I'll have "ascended to the heights of the Gods", as they say in the movie.
I actually graduated from the same all boys prep school in Nashville, Tennessee as the film’s writer. The school upon which the film was based. So it means more to me than most any film I can imagine. Will always have a special place in my heart.
Two comments. First, Jim Valvano in his famous final speech (for sports enthusiasts) when dying of cancer says it is important each and every day to do three things: laugh, think, and have your emotions moved to tears. Well, DPS does all three. Second, I am a retired college professor and several times students have said my teaching style reminded them of the Mr. Keating character from DPS. It is one of the most endearing compliments I have ever received. Thanks for your reaction.
You can see how Charlie was Neil best mate, he is the one who tells Todd He is dead and when they are praying Charlie can’t even sing he just stares blank. He is also expelled at the end which reaffirms again his personality and how he left as Niel left. In some deleted scenes it can be seen how the dead’s poet society carry Neil’s coffin. Neil was the leader and the one who moved all of the guys, he put a smile on everyone
Not to say is in my top 3 favorite movies and all the hidden but not so hidden messages about the pleasures of life and how they are related to words, feelings and poetry. It is only said once in the movie but “Carpe diem” is basically what it is, to grow older and don’t regret not doing things.
The joy for a watcher is to feel the thrill of sharing a great movie with a friend and watching them experience the greatness… thank you for the transparency.

Hi, I just discovered your channel and watched your reaction to DPS which I would say is in my top 3 Favourite Movies of all time.
You don't need to apologise for being emotional at the way the story unfolds. I discovered the film about 30 years ago and it still affects me that way too. I have just had to wipe tears away just watching your genuine reaction.
Everyone should have a teacher like Mr Keating (or at least an influential adult) Someone who encourages you to think differently and follow the path that you want to follow. That way you will end up doing something that you love doing and we never forget the person who showed us that we could go that way. Neil in DPS would never have got the fulfilment from being a doctor that he would have got from acting, if only his parents had understood that.

The shot at 27:04 is so majestic and a thing of beauty. I have it on my computer as my background screen saver. The boys standing (the ones he got through to) in juxtaposition to the ones who remained seated. Still makes me so emotional. GREAT choice for your reaction! I've seen this film numerous times and just now caught that. So subtle. The director of this film, Peter Weir, was always one of my favorites. He's a master painter except he uses film instead of paint.

Eve, I've watched hundreds of reactions of sad songs and sad movies since the pandemic began, and you are the very first reactor to shed real tears. So many pretend to cry, and the act they put on is as transparent as it is pathetic. If I may recommend an extraordinary film that you probably haven't seen, I'd love to see your reaction to, "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", starring Jack Nicholson. The 1975 film won 3 of the 4 big Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress. it's got a small amount of profanity in it, but it's so infrequent you can easily edit it out. It combines dark comedy with searing drama, and is almost universally considered by film critics to be one of the finest films ever made. Please don't research it, as spoilers abound. Trust me, you'll love the film.
@@Cosmo-Kramer admittedly I have watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, however it was ages ago when I was young so I don’t really remember it! I’d be happy to watch it again however it wouldn’t technically be my first time watching. I do love Jack Nicholson though, so it could be a great one to watch again nonetheless! @@EveReacts Eve, the most important thing a Reactor can do is be honest with her viewers regarding her familiarity with whatever movie, song, TV show she's reacting to. So I'm sure that as long as you tell us in the beginning of the reaction video that you have seen the film before but don't really remember it, people will still enthusiastically watch your reaction. Besides, you NEED to see this film as an adult, so I think you should do a reaction video of it. :) But, if you'd rather not, then yes, I do have other suggestions. Have you seen the 1955 Alfred Hitchcock thriller, "Rear Window", starring Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly? It ranks among my Top 10 films of all time! Film critics love it, as well.

Definitely a great movie, I actually saw this one in the theater, I was maybe a year to young to fully appreciate it, but my sister who was 2 years older was balling when we left.
If you want some recommendations for some good movies to react to, by top 5 movies are:
1. In the Name of the Father
2. Empire of the Sun
3. Almost famous
4. The Abyss (director's cut)
5. Big Trouble
I guarantee that with the first 2, you will definitely be crying at the end for each of those.

What Dreams May Come is an absolutely gorgeous film. Visually, it's just on a whole other level. Narratively, though, I pretty much hated it. It's all subjective, of course, but I certainly wouldn't put it on a list of must-see Robin Williams films, myself.
How do we come to experience such a rich palette of feelings that we do watching "Dead poets society" ? Well, It's honest and uncompromising. It shows us both the beauty and the horror, the extraordinary and the mundane. It is also realistic about what we do when we have to make the hard choices in life. Above all it is a heartfelt movie that shows us that there's poetry in those everyday struggles. Those that we don't perhaps notice in others, but which are so deeply embedded in ourselves.
Peter Weir is a masterful director. Here are some prominent examples of his brilliance: "Picnic at hanging rock", "Gallipoli", "The year of living dangerously", "Witness", "Fearless", "The Truman show" and " Master and commander."
Wow, that sums it up beautifully. Truly a magnificent film that touched my heart.
Oh, I didn't know Peter Weir directed The Truman Show, another movie that I absolutely love! I'll have to check out the rest.. thank you for your recommendations :)

I remember when I was in high school I bought a Henry David Thoreau book and I had not seen this movie. I was just a different breed.
High school English class I remember the teacher she made us read The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail. *wiki* "leading up to his night spent in a jail in Concord, Massachusetts. Thoreau was jailed for refusing to pay a poll tax on the grounds that the money might be used to pay for the Mexican-American War, which he opposed." and maybe a bit of Walden or something I don't remember. Henry seems like a off the grid guy, or like so many libertarians saying, "starve the government of taxes till they do what's right." Forgot all about so many good scenes as it's been so long. This movie scene where everyone loves to march and sync up so naturally. Nobody realizes just how scary the kids clapping then getting in step really is. They are doing it themselves right now not even realizing. We used to protect people, now they get demonized just for disagreeing. Sayings like “I’d give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety’s sake” have been coming up in the conversation and I haven't even seen that movie A Man for All Seasons. Sad that most people wont get the meaning or even listen to so many words that used to be a simple truth about this country.

theres a deleted scene of neil and todd practicing lines for neils play on the dock and i really wish they would have kept it in because it not only builds their relationship but also explains why todd ran to the dock in the first place

That wasn't just him backing out. That was the truth, too.
This movie still breaks me to this day. Every time. It's the combination of the mother's repeated shreaking "He's alright!" and then Todd finally finding and letting out his own true barbaric yawp, and it's Neil's name. Like can somebody hand me a box of tissues please? and maybe a blanket and a candy bar too? However, as a firm literature and poetry lover, this movie stil fulfills me at the same time. In a weird way, this movie is one of the reason why I fell in love with lit/poetry. I first saw it when I was in middle school. It made me see books and words in a new light, and from that point on I have been proud to love lit/poetry. I now work in an independent bookstore, and my specialty is lit/poetry. If I had become an english teacher which a lot of pople told me I should have been, I would be a Mr. Keating.

Great movie. I like college movies like this . You should see other similar movies like The Emperor Club and School Ties. A great Steven Hawk you should see is Gattaca. Also other great Robin Williams you should see are Patch Adams and Awakning

What is poetry, or life for that matter, without the ability to truly empathize with the experiences of others. To do one's best to understand someone else's vision of the world, to understand their pain as well as joy. It is not an easy thing to do, but well worth the effort. Opening our minds and hearts may feel like the greatest risk we can take, and yet, when we do, the rewards can be miraculous.
Hi Eve, I loved your reaction to "Dead Poet's Society", which is one of my favourites. You can also see the depth of talent in Robin Williams if you watch "What Dreams May Come" which I loved and "Good Will Hunting" an amazing film. Then there is "Dances with Wolves" of course, "The Mission", also quite beautiful and the truly wonderful "Immortal Beloved". There are so many great movies out there. Enjoy!

@@EveReacts Of the ones I mentioned I would say that "The English Patient" (Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas) is an absolute must. It is a deep film, very beautiful and full of the kind of love that everyone dreams of in life. The same is true of "Somewhere in Time" (Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour) and of course "Dr Zhivago" (Omar Sheriff, Julie Christie) which is sublime, the music alone is beyond imagining. My father said that when it came out people said that it more Russian than Russian. These are films full of love and loss. It seems that older films are better in this regard although "The Time Traveler's Wife" (Rachel McAdams, Eric Bana) is more recent and also truly beautiful.
Then there are others like the delightful "Monsignor Quixote" (Alec Guiness, Leo McKern) with Alec Guiness an old priest of a small Spanish village and Leo McKern the communist mayor. Then there's the beautiful "Out of Africa" (Robert Redford, Meryl Streep) with the divine score by John Barry who also did "Somewhere in Time". In "What Dreams May Come" you get to see what a man will do for love. In "The Mission" (Robert de Niro, Jeremy Irons), this time for the love of God. In "Immortal Beloved" you will hear the incredible music of Beethoven which delves deeply into the soul, especially in his 9th Symphony and his Piano Concertos 4th and 5th especially. My sister and I saw it together in the cinema, we cried almost the whole film.
All the others are also amazing films with "Clara" the most recent, you can see it on amazon prime. It has a real married couple playing the two main roles. Have fun watching them but be prepared for a deep emotional response.

I decorated my graduation cap with quotes from this movie imposed over a typewriter. "Carpe Diem" and "What will your verse be?" People loved it. Especially because I was going on to college to study English Literature. Now I work in an independent bookstore. Although I didn't earn my degree, I left school because of family illness, and became a caregiver, I still followed my passion and my dream came true. Next step: own my own bookstore.

I remember this movie while in real time in the 80's. I recall entire cast doing interview on Phil Donahue talk show. Does anyone know who Phil Donahue is now? My generation does. It's just a brilliant movie. The acting and writing was just so on point. Much Respect.

Wonderful reaction Eve. When this movie came out every graduation cap had carpe diem written on it. This is my favorite Robin movie and it's motivated me to work with kids and young adults to make even a small impact. Only sad part is that we knew what was coming for Robin. RIP Captain my Captain.
This is in my top 5 movies of all time. Considering I also went to the same college prep school as Ethan Hawke, (this school looks kinda similar to our school and campus) it certainly hits home. So many powerful scenes and great acting across the board with a simple message of finding your voice and using different forms of self-expression whether it be art, music, etc.

I looked over your content and I am surprised to not see more movies and I only see one or two series. I have a special request and a special movie request. No one has done a reaction to and it is my all-time favorite movie: *Girl with a Pearl Earring.* It stars Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth. It is based on that famous painting and also taken from a novel written be Tracy Chevalier. I am sort of a movie critic so I don't watch every movie. This is my BEST recommendation.
