Synopsis
A new English teacher, John Keating (Robin Williams), is introduced to an all-boys preparatory school that is known for its ancient traditions and high standards. He uses unorthodox methods to reach out to his students, who face enormous pressures from their parents and the school. I'm so glad you watched this film - one of my all time favorites. I'm not all the way through your reaction, so I don't know if you address the fact that we see here a young version of another legend - Ethan Hawke. Might I suggest that you dive into his filmography, perhaps Predestination or First Reformed. There's also Reality Bites, a kind of grunge coming of age from the 90s or Juliette, Naked a great romcom.

My grandmother used to pay us kids $5 every time we memorized a poem. We kids thought of it as easy money, but as an adult I realized that the real reward was having all these poems in my mind. She was a poet (Clarine Coffin Grenfell) and an English teacher. 💗

@@FrankFreezy_ When the actor Christopher Reeve (Superman) was paralyzed in a horseback riding accident and eventually ran out of money for the kind of care he needed at home, his friend Robin Williams stepped up and made sure he had what he needed. Robin Williams was as kind as he was talented. I think this film is the one that shows his heart.

It took many times watching to catch onto this, but Todd (the quiet kid) found his voice, his yawp in Neil's death while out in the snow. It is his name that gave him his voice. Such a powerful movie.

"his dad is going to hate himself forever" oh, we all wished. in the final cut we never even see neil's father ONCE after his death, but there was a deleted scene where he confronts keating at neil's funeral, and puts the entire blame on him. like his attitude, demeanour, literally nothing changed. like it was infuriating bc...hello your son just died and he's already out here tossing blame instead of mourning for him (in contrast to his mother).
but thats also where i think it's a good authorial decision, some characters dont deserve a redemption arc and should be hated till the very end. if they made us feel any sort of sympathy for his dad, i think i would hate that even more than the no-change in character. such a wonderful movie and i loved your reaction and everything you said about it thoroughly!!
So hard to understand why Robin Williams did what he did was he Neil in some way ?❤
I’ve seen this movie nearly twenty times, and the thing that really gets me the most about the relationship between Neil and his father is that Neil is willing to look at the situation through his father’s perspective, and can even understand where he’s coming from and why he does what he does, but Neil’s father refuses to truly engage with Neil’s perspective in good faith. Neil saying “I can see his point” as opposed to his father telling him to “forget all that ‘*acting*’ business” is so telling of their dynamic, if their scenes prior weren’t enough to establish it. Neil isn’t allowed to be anything outside of the mold his father has made for him, and attempts to speak up for himself or to take control of his own life and break out of said mold will be squashed, seen as insubordination, and even guilted out of him (as is seen by his father using his mother as a bargaining chip by saying “You know much [you being a doctor] means to your mother, don’t you?”).
It also makes his decisions to forgo asking his father’s permission as well as lie to the school board, and Keating, about his father giving permission at all-which is ultimately the decision that undoes him-more understandable, while still stupid. He could have, and arguably *should have* asked for permission, but he was also doing all of the understanding in their relationship on multiple levels; He understood his dad so well that he knew better than anyone that nothing he had to say would change his mind.
(And as a not so fun fact: In a deleted scene of Neil’s funeral, as he holds his crying wife in his arms, Neil’s father continues to pin ‘the blame’, if we’re going to pin blame at all for the tragedy that befalls them, on Keating-much like how he blamed Keating for making Neil ‘disobey’ them in the first place. He never learns, which only goes to show that Neil is ultimately right; not even his own son’s suicide as a result of his passion and final bit of autonomy and choice being ripped from him changes his mind.)
Oh my goodness this is so long, I’m so sorry 😭 I just have so much to say about this movie, and, if it weren’t incredibly obvious, it’s my favorite one LOL

Same. It is trip when you grow up watching someone like Robin, he sort of becomes that cool uncle like Franklin was talking about. That dude you may only see at a family gathering every once in awhile but somehow stays in your mind and heart all the time. He had a lot of broadly comedic films but many of his roles had something profound to learn, especially at a young age. Losing Robin was a bit like losing someone you knew, even if we didn't really know him.

My senior year of high school I brought this movie in to watch in English class towards the end of the school year (2011 for context), knowing my teacher would approve but having no idea if the class would enjoy it as much as I did. We had to split the movie up across three classes, and for the most part everyone was completely silent watching the movie so I assumed everyone hated it and would hate me even more for bringing in a movie everyone hated. I was completely wrong, and found out how emotionally invested everyone was when the bell rang in the middle of the s**cide scene. The entire class erupted in shouts because the teacher paused it right as Neil was reaching for the gun. Shoutout to Ms. Hicks for letting us watch this as a class.
Shout out to you for sharing that story. Good job exposing your classmates to such a wonderful piece of art. It was risky but you did it. That was a wild Cliffhanger for the class to stop at tho lol I would have lost my mind. And yes shout out to Miss Hicks

Omg, I still remember what a mess I was when I watched this in the cinema as a teenager! And I can't believe how much it still made me cry today. 😭 It's truly a masterpiece and noone could ever have played the role of Mr. Keating as perfectly as Robin Williams. He's such a passionate, extraordinarily talented actor who's sorely missed. RIP, oh Captain my Captain, you influenced more lives than you'll ever know. 😢❤

Fun fact: a few of the boys in this film (background characters) were actual students where this was filmed. They actually earned more for their few scenes than their teachers normally made.
I was one of those lucky people to have teachers that left a profound mark on my formative years. I'm forever grateful and indebted to them. Thank you Robin for leaving you soul into your films, thank you for letting us in, you are forever missed !
When I found out I was having a son at the age of 47 and watching this again it broke me. Unlike all the other times I've watched I made it a point to do better as a father in understanding him as he grows.

I'm so happy you did this movie. Most of Robbin Williams movies had a deeper meaning. He taught the boys to think for themselves and to live life. With all that is going on in our education system this is a good lesson to learn. Thais is why our society is in the state it's in today. Every one follows the masses, instead of thinking for themselves. Your words are well expressed. Thank you for the review. It's sad that Mr Williams ended his life. He was a brilliant actor and genius comedian. Most of his movies were so deep. His sorrow was very deep.😢 Another good movie of his was Awakenings, with Robert Denero. This movie was an inspiration for me to become a teacher. I love it, and even with all the tremendous roles Robin Williams played throughout his career, this my favorite.
As a teacher through almost a decade now, I love that final scene. There are plenty of kids, for whom you are just going to be another teacher. Your successes should not be measured in the amount of As you hand out during exams, but those rare few students whose life you impacted for the better.
WHAT DREAMS MAY COME! It might as well have been Robin saying goodbye from the afterlife.

I grew up with strict parents. So I definitely empathized with Neil, and made his death hit harder. On another note, this definitely shows how a strict childhood creates the best liars & teaches your children not to confide in you as the parent.
The fact that his parents still couldn’t see their part in Neil’s death & instead blame Keating will always infuriate me.
And yeah, Knox’s whole Nice Guy storyline does not work anymore, especially that party scene.

And then parents are surprised when they're old and their kids wants nothing to do with them. I was too naive to think that Neil's dad would feel guilty about what happened. I love this movie. It has similar themes, but additionally looks at challenges for women during a similar time period.
When they were making this movie. Robin kept trying to make Ethan Hawke laugh to break character but he just wouldn't break so Robin kept trying harder and harder and getting funnier and funnier. Ethan has said in interviews that he thought Robin didn't like him because he kept trying to make him break character. But the truth was he was genuinely just trying to get the guy to laugh but Hawke wanted to be a serious actor. It wasn't until after filming was complete that Robin's agent called Ethan and said "Robin told me he thinks you gonna be a big star so I'm adding you as a client" Ethan still has the same agent
I've never felt more proud & weep so hard as when I saw this for the first time. I was a teenager myself, and this movie left a mark on me, too. Seeing this again as an adult is even more impressive - to see this from that perspective. One of my favorite movies ever.
I can watch this movie a million times. I just have to be in the right headspace for it. The acting by everyone is just so good that I can’t get enough of it. But every time, it rips my guts out.
Neil’s parents wanted him to become a doctor. Coincidentally actor Robert Sean Leonard went on to play one of the doctors on the tv drama House.
Great reaction to a wonderful movie. My favorite Williams role is in The Fisher King - everything about it is top notch.

First time I watched this film was AP English, the end of my senior year of high school. It felt momentous and life changing, and it was the movie I was watching when I had my first kiss, two years later. This movie is so important to me, and I hope to contribute a verse.

When I was in junior high I had 3 teachers that apparently saw something in me that deserved nurturing. They nudged me without force and I was as crazy as any 15 year old. My chemistry teacher agreed to explore the anarchist's cookbook with me. My biology teacher taught me about plants off curriculum. My Swedish teacher loaned me books from her personal bookshelf. They watered the growing plant inside me. And I'm grateful.

I think you would love What dreams May Come. It uses art in a very interesting, unique way. And there is actually some ethnic diversity in it.
It also might interest you to know that dead poets society is kind of a queer classic. There is a lot of gay subtext in the film. It isn't as easy to pick up today. But there was a time when there were some big movies about being gay but you had to leave the gay part out😅. Basically, people feel that Neil actually killed himself because he was gay. And his father was terrified of the play specifically because it showcased his flamboyance to the world. When you think of it this way, his roommate's reaction is more in place, because they were together. There is a lot to this theory more than I could put here. But I thought it might interest you. Because I remember you talking about a friend of yours who had delt with something similar.
I remember seeing this movie when i was 11 or 12, which was just after I realized that I'm gay. Back then, it felt so hopeless. I thought about ending it many times. This movie was one of those things that pulled me back. It was so life-affirming.
What Dreams May Come is a movie I will watch for sure.
No surprise at all that this movie is a queer classic. Everything he went through with his father not letting him be, express and be his true self is so tragic and real to the queer experience and coming out. Definitely believe it's.

The dad won't hate himself forever because for him to do so he would have to see into what happened with his son but in the movie the father would not be aware the role he played in his son's deat,
He chose to go after the teacher instead. It was this hardness of heart that drove Neal to want to end his life.

this is my favorite movie to watch in the fall, the setting is so beautiful. (also, as a side note - i am so excited for your dances with wolves reaction. i was obsessed with that movie as a kid!)

Like literally put it in your shower, let it run and wash the leaves (like rain), then sit in the steam for a bit with the curtain closed. It’ll be so lush and shiny. Only saying cuz of the browning on the edges, droopiness and dustiness of the leaves. I enjoyed this reaction thoroughly, btw, I just noticed this at the end. Also you can replace the light bulb in that lamp with a plant bulb, but it still needs more light to thrive in that corner.

This movie came out when I was a teenager. Loved it! But I loved Neil, Todd and Know even more then :D Such babies! I always liked Robin Williams more in his dramatic roles, although they are gladly never without humor. I also recommend Awakenings with Williams and DeNiro and Good Morning Vietnam.

Most people have some childhood trauma or other that has greatly helped to shape their personalities...sadly.
Even worse , most did not encounter a wise and understanding mentor who could help then break the vicious cycle...before it really sets in.
That poor boy's father was in a vicious cycle of his own and he could only relate to his son in the one way that he knew. With failure staring him in the face, dad could not even take responsibility.
