Thank you for the gift of this knowledge. Without folks like you, laypeople like me will never discover the reason for the greatness of the great masters. How beautifully explained and what a joy it must be to be able to appreciate the mastery of SSI and other greats at a deep level!

A very nostalgic recall experiences of Semmengudi mama jeevanaand sangita vyaktitvam in listening to this highly insightful presentation. Important missouts are-broadcaster, AIR, as Chief Producer, administrator-institutional teaching and public speaking as a vidwan(thought provoking, samayouchityam ,witty, message with punch). Mama and my guru and father, Dr.Sandhyavandanam Srinivasa Rao were sishyas of Maharajapuram and were colleagues in AIR. Mama learnt Dikshita's compositions from father as well as Brindamma. Dr.Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna told my brother, vidwan Poornapragna that he used to visit Mama not to learn music but, to learn to speak artfully! Mama did suffer a low when MMI and GNB were at their peak of popularity for a few years.

A detailed description of Semmangudi Mama's music. When you described Mama's type of Neraval and Kalpanaswaram, I was reminded of his Neraval's and Swaram's at Daari Nerigi, Paluku Paluku. Of course who could forget Mama's Manodharmam in these Kirthanam's. When Mama sang Neraval at Paluku Paluku, we would feel that there is honey in the words.

For a person like me who just enjoys listening to Carnatic music and especially SSI, I am so much more educated as to why I enjoyed his concerts. Your deconstruction is so well done that even a simple listener like me can appreciate the genius in him. I am fascinated by your ability to bring out such complex elements and present them so simply. It feels like you are sitting in my living room and explaining it to me. Thank you for this and I am eternally grateful to you for this. Please keep posting such informative videos. I have attended some of his best concerts in Chennai and Bangalore in the early 70s and 80s before I left for the US. I can never forget his concerts with LJ and VR. Mesmerizing. Now I know why. 🙂

27 minutes of insightful information regarding the music of the great Sri. Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. It was total bliss. Was a great tribute to the great man. Even though I do not belong to that era, and have only technology to thank for being exposed to his music, hearing you talking about him gave me further insight into the music of him. Humble namaskarams.

Very well articulated about Dr.Semmangudi. While I have heard more of his recordings , I being a fan of him could feel all the points you mentioned. He had tuned many composers like the Khamas of Badrachalam Ramadasar ( Rama Jogee Mandu Konare) or swati tirunal kritis ( Jagadeesa in Nadanamakriya) to name a few or some of the kritis rendered by him like Ayyappan Avadaritha Kadhamrutam, Srikantani yeda (bhavapriya) , parullanna mata, maru balka etc etc.. are real treat . While many used to call him a nasal singer, now only I understood the importance of it. And the nasal special to my liking was the niraval in Bhoolokha Vaikuntam ( the kha he used to show in nasal tone ) and the breath that follows ( this is a recording with Prof .TN Krishnan and Palghat Sri Mani Iyer ) was divine. With headphones in a flight at 35000 feet , what more bliss I could feel that day almost 10 to 15 years ago of this Kambhoji master piece. Nice presentation Vidwan Sri. Vijay Siva. More power to you.

Vijay SIr, this is a brilliant episode, you have given exhaustive view about his life (nice you have also touched the Swathi Thirunal Controversy, Dr BMK, Dr S Balachander issues briefly as that will give a 360 deg view to the audience), all his disciples singing in unison without looking at each other is a profound statement about what a great teacher he was, the legend's prediction about the musician going to cough (24:05) is a testimony to his unbeatable control over music, Thank you so much Sir for this episode (a humble request, when time permits kindly make an episode about the one and only Shri U Shrinivas) 🙏🙏🙏

Semmangudi was great and Vijaya Siva swamin brings out Semmangudi's amazing gifted talents. Great information. For some reason, Critic Subbudu did not like Sri Semmangudi. never undrstood why.

    NamastE Sir! Welcome back!
I did miss your valuable uploads with tons of information.
So the Musicians keep evolving all the time. So also their audience and their listeners over the time.
Till today I thought that 'singing through the nose' was a defect and should be avoided at all costs.
Today I learned from you that it is done on purpose - to protect the throat from a sudden onslaught!
"BhAvayAmi raghu rAmam" has certainly become more brilliant, when converted into a rAgamAlikA.
So every genius has many facets of brilliance and shines in many different fields - inspiring the less fortunate brothers and sisters.

With due humility 🙏 - kindly change your wardrobe assistant.
There are matching dhoties fir the jubbas or shirts nowadays. They look good. Even we make our father wear those. So kindly consider 🙏🙏🙏
