  • I just go straight to the code:
    - Tax Code for 508: www.law.cornel...
    - IRS Guidance: www.irs.gov/ch...

    Leave it to the IRS to make it as complicated (and verbose...) as possible!

    Churches still have to file some STATE paperwork in order to avoid paying taxes on purchases, etc. - correct? (Part of this is getting a state ID or EIN number...)

      That is what I'm learning...the differences from State to State. In the Dakotas, churches don't have to do anything special to prove their status.

    You didn’t answer the question , what is a 508 (c)(1)(a) church. It’s not listed & each state has better info.

      There is no such thing as a 508c1a church. 508c1a is the reference in the Internal Revenue Code that states churches are automatically 501c3.

    You still have to maintain the exemption status of 508 making plain that you are exempt from the filing status and scrutiny of the 501. Yes they are similar but your over simplification is a bit misleading because it is so vague. I really liked the first portion that was awesome the conclusion is weak. The 508 exemption is in the code/law for e reason please help people understand what that is.

      Thanks for the feedback. This is a topic I'll have to revisit.

    How about a Mosque?

      Good question! I believe the ruling applies to "places of worship." In the eyes of the IRS, churches, mosques, temples, etc. all would be subject to 508c1A.

      @@JeffPospisil would our home or anywhere we worship not a "place of worship"? must it be at a church?

      @@Tony-RS3 For Property Tax purposes, that would be up to the County to determine. For Income Tax purposes, they are really looking at the entity instead of the building. Which entity is receiving the money and paying the expenses. The entity can meet any where.

    You wear that hat to sleep too?

    • @JeffPospisil
      @JeffPospisil  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wear it a whole lot...except on weekends! It makes it easier for people to recognize me when I'm at gatherings.
