We upgraded our 2012 Odyssey with the 2020. We're super happy with it! We decided to go with the EX-L w/Navigation instead of the Elite or Touring, just adding preferred upgrades.... for some of the reasons you mentioned. We still spent 46k after it was all said and done, but got what we wanted. Basically, we have everything the Elite has minus (the vacuum, cabin camera, phone charger pad, and the 19in wheels) We also added some Trem features that look really nice! I agree with you about the Auto start/stop feature... not necessary. I always turn it off, too. Some of the other stuff you mentioned like (back vents, power adapters, gas cap/door issue, cruse control, and auto wiper) doesn't bother us. Thank you for taking the time to do this video.

Thank you so much for taking the time and energy to make this review. There's a fine line between something that's going to work in theory vs practicality and most car reviews from dealerships and paid sponsors of course point out all the great features that a vehicle possesses (in theory). As I was reading through some of the comments on here, I couldn't help but wonder if these people understand your intent of the video. Thank you again for making this video as it helps me out in deciding whether or not to upgrade to a new vehicle.

@@Myksgarage and Bob Hong, you got it right. The purpose of this video isn't to whine or gripe (like some other comments think it is), but is instead EXACTLY what I was looking for. We were looking into buying a used 2018 or 2019 Odyssey Elite because of the ventilated seats, but the practicality of a lot of the changes Myk pointed out are well-heard. Greatly appreciate the honest video! I too agree wireless charging is pretty useless as I don't know anyone who is rich enough to not have a case on their phone and risk it breaking all the time. I'm tall, and will sit in the back to play with kids sometimes and don't want the A/C vent just turning my knee into an icicle. Also agreed the vacuum isn't going to work. It works for spilling a giant pile of crackers/crumbs, but you're not going to get your interior "clean" with this housed vac.

We did start having a lot of warnings flash about transmission, engine, parking brake, etc. upon startup. Come to find out it was the battery. Replaced under warrantee. The batteries in these vans do not last long. New ones have AGM batteries, which are more robust.
Don’t be surprised if your Honda’s battery does not last more than 2 years.

Thank you for the nicely done video!
    My 2 cents:
Honda vac is for picking up cereal and crumbs, not so good for sucking sands from the carpets. Good for keeping messcallation at bay on long road trips.
Cabin watch is ok but it would be better if it didn't freeze up in hot weather.
Lane keep assist really only helps keeps your hands from getting fatigued during long drives because it makes the small corrections for you.
You didn't mention the intercom, but that keeps the kids entertained: This is the pilot speaking... Next stop, playground!
The audio system on the elite is nice.
I wish it had a larger fuel and window washer fluid tanks.
Auto stop does suck but there's a way to trick the computer into disabling it. Has something to do with opening the hood while the car is running. Search the forums.
The seats are friggin heavy and I'm a 200lb gorilla.

    • @aeiplanner
      @aeiplanner 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The reason why it functions this way is because Honda is trying to save you and expense down the road. By using the lock, they shut off the actual relay that controls the lock so that when kids continue playing with the switches it doesn't burn the relay forcing you to spend $$$ on disassembly of the door panel and relay replacement. I do agree that it makes no sense that they'd lock out the front passenger as well though.

    • @Pofucci
      @Pofucci 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@aeiplanner Your explanation does indeed make sense. I don't know how VW does it, but I also drive a Golf and the same rear window locking feature doesn't cut off the driver's control over the rear windows. It's not a major hassle, but it's one of the little things that undermines the Honda experience for me. I could also talk about the counter-intuitive and very unfriendly entertainment system in all 3 Odysseys I've owned so far (2015 being the worst), but that's a discussion for another post!

We have a 2018 that was also the new generation. My wife loves it and tells me so almost everyday we drive. The two things I don't like is the OEM tires dry grip and the safety system comes on a little to soon. My cars are V8 truck's and Mustang so a Minivan isn't my thing, but I am very happy that my wife loves the Odyssey.

I’m getting a 2021 EX-L in a few days, upgrading from my 2016 touring (getting the EX-L because it costs less and the main difference is the RES which we don’t need anymore) pretty excited for it! EDIT: we didn't end up getting the new one, as the dealer was giving us a bad deal, so we'll be sticking with our '16!

That's why we bought the EX-L instead of the Elite. I can't justify paying an extra 9-10k for those useless features you've mentioned. Plus, the cabin watch and RES is known to have issues among many elite owners if you use both simultaneously for a period of time. The only thing I wish EX-L would have is the 10spd transmission (since it is more reliable) and the LED headlights.

We bought a 2019 Honda Odyssey Elite and couldn't wait to get rid of it. Six months later we sold it to CarMax and bought a 2020 Subaru Ascent. Yes, we gave up some storage space, but the Subaru Ascent is a much better vehicle. Our main complaints were the adaptive cruise control on the Honda is very sluggish, the auto dim feature for the headlights only works when you are traveling above 45 mph (useless for us on the country roads where we live), and just the overall driving experience. The cabin watch feature was nice (we have 5 kids), but this wasn't enough to get us to keep it. One very bad safety feature is the auto closing rear tailgate. If you start closing tailgate using the foot sensor, the tailgate won't stop if you are leaning into the vehicle. This could trap a small child if they accidentally active the tailgate. If you are deciding between the Honda Odyssey and the Subaru Ascent, definitely get the Ascent.

Good review. It actually makes me glad we didn't splurge like we really wanted to. We went from a Toyota rav4 to a 2018 odyssey EX, so in that sense of upgrade, I'm totally happy with it. I really wanted the leather seats and rear entertainment, but at the additional cost of $7,000, it just wasn't in our budget. Consider the EX if any of you out there are just looking to upgrade to a bigger car with good safety features (Honda Sensing is standard on all trims) 🙂

I own a 2018 Honda Odyssey Touring. I have to agree with many of the points you have made, but not all.
The Vac is really cheap, we don't use it either.
Honda watch is a waste of money -
I really wish they had spent the money on giving us a Heads up display instead.
I like the cruise control actually, I set it with the lane keep assist on and it seems to reduce the stress of long trips.
I used to own a 2007 Honda Odyssey, this drives amazing compared to that model year. They added the snow driving to this one which doesn't slip as it did in the old one.
I think the biggest negative of the new one you didn't mention is that the second row seats weigh 70 lbs each. So if you have to take them out for any reason, it's a pain in the back.

It drives way nicer than our 16 Touring, love the brake assist and LDW, don’t like auto engine stop, don’t like that Honda removed the blind spot camera, they made it for just the passenger side and that was a pet peeve, Honda should have kept the blind spot camera and also add it to the driver side for the blind spot. As an owner of a 2018 Canadian EX-L RES, I can agree with a lot of what you said. The adaptive cruise isn't smooth, I keep road departure off as I find it more annoying than helpful. But it was your point at the very end that kind of made me shake my head... I'm not sure how you justified spending $20,000 for these updates/bells and whistles in the first place. Seems like you didn't do much research as a lot of your points have been raised online at forums like Odyclub.com. That's a lot of money when you consider the Honda Sensing stuff are mostly driver aids (the most useful SAFETY feature probably being Collision Mitigation), the 10 speed transmission which as you said, doesn't even improve on fuel economy versus your 2015, a nicer look, Android Auto/Apple Carplay, Blu-ray, etc. Other things you didn't like wouldn't have been new to you, coming from an older Odyssey (gas door, window switch).

Wow, I agree with you 100%. Honda engineers should watch this. I was looking for this vehicle but I have watch similar negative comments all over TH-cam. The start/stop was probably put there to satisfy the green people. It will wear out your starter and engine main bearing-watch Scotty Kilmer channel. Starting with no oil pressure is brutal on the main bearings !. I have a Subaru Crosstrek with paddle shifter and this is the only mini van with this feature; so I am waiting for other manufacturers. Toyota Sienna is bullet proof but it is overdue for a new body. Sienna is the only one with 4WD option. So I am waiting for Sienna or opt for the cheaper Kia Sedona.

$25k for an upgrade is a very fiscally responsible way to think about it. If it fits your needs and runs then keep it til it dies. If it’s worth anything, I think the newer vans are designed and proven to be safer in crashes.

I upgraded my 2010 Odyssey Touring to 2014 Odyssey Touring about a month ago. I purposely didn't go with the Elite trim mainly because we have very little use of the vacuum even with three kids. Plus I like to swap out the headlights to LED versus the HID with the Elite trim. Hope it lasts until I can go back to small sedan when my kids have their own rides. :)

When you open the sliding door to any minivan it is going to block the gas cap.

Its a safety feature. Imagine someone pumping gas and opening that door. You will either damage the door or knock the gas pump out of the filler neck. On our 01 DGC if the gas door is open, we can't open the slider door.

Drove it and a Pacifica. Honda has had major transmission issues and no Sto-N-Go. Butt ugly exterior is hard on the eyes. Pacifica drove like a sports car compared to the Honda. They need to do better! Bought the Pacifica Limited and love it!

Grand Caravan is a POS, we got stuck with a 2019 as a rental after our '16 Odyssey got totaled, the screen is like a 2009 Garmin, side doors are clunky as hell, runs nowhere near as good as the Odyssey... and its Dodge... our '16 EX-L Odyssey was nicer than that 19 Caravan, now we have an '18 EX and that caravan is no comparison.

@@CRXJDM88 timing belt won't cost me anything more than the belt itself and a few hours labor, ALL v6 Hondas recommend doing a timing belt every 100-120k mi as preventative maintenance which in turn is a minimal thing if the rest of the vehicle will continue going strong for 300k+ mi. not to mention the LIFETIME powertrain warranty as long as all maintenance has been done properly. lets see that clunky ass Caravan make it past 200k mi w.o going through a trans or burning more oil than fuel.

My Odyssey is being recalled for a fire risk, due to a wiring hireness being installed wrong. There's been 3 fires reported so far. That is unacceptable! I'm sick of this piece of crap! This is my first and last Honda. Had issues with the sliding doors, electrical and now this recall! Piece of garbage!

We have a 2020 EX. Love the van, rides like a dream. But we disabled the radar cruise control, lane centering and auto start stop immediately. Also, my old Elantra GT seemed to be smarter designed. I could stand under the hatch on my GT. Odyssey hits me in the chin. Also, I could lock the windows and still control them from the drivers seat. Odyssey locks everyone. Also playing music from a USB stick, I have yet to find a vehicle that does that as well as my old Elantra. It was immediate. The Odyssey initializes for minutes. I'm out of the neighborhood before the thing starts playing (now I use the internal storage, which works). Lastly, would it have killed Honda to fit a permanent trip odometer on the instrument panel? And a feature from Nissan I would have liked to see, cruise control shows what speed it is set to. If you brake, it just grays out the number so you know what speed it'll go to if you hit resume. Brilliant feature. Odyssey just draws a box around cruise control. Overall a good van, unrivaled for rear facing car seats and still accessing the third row. Wonderful ride, smooth as silk. Just wish they'd hire a few folks to focus on everyday usability.

The new self - driving cars like Tesla are going to ruin the driving experience and further remove the necessity of the driver at all.

In my opinion, the Elite/Touring versions are a waste of $. We have a 2006 Odyssey EX-L with 200k mi. on it which we bought new in 2005 and have been very happy with. We're now shopping for a used 2019 EX-L for around $30k - $32k. They are out there with 8k-20k mi. on them. If you keep the vehicle long enough, the new basic features seem space age! Saved $2k per year since then and now have cash to plunk down thanks to Dave Ramsey, I'll never buy new again.

The only way to get the vented seats, you have to get the Elite. I agree about the stop/start, mpg and vacuum. Though all your other negatives I completely disagree. I got my 19 elite in November 2018 for $39k, so maybe I am not as sensitive. Really love the adaptive cruise and lane assist, cause I can finally sleep while my not so smooth wife drives.
