I used to match fish, infact I won my very first match. But the amount of preparation and sleepness nights and dozing off at the wheel made me think again about match fishing. I now fish for pleasure. Thanks for your tips and insight as always.
A good piece of advice I got from one of our team members here was to never dwell to long on your successes or failures, and to keep coming back. Thanks for another great vid Rhys
Rhys great video. How often do you change your flies when on the water? E.g. 8 casts and if no action change them? What about method? How long would you give it before changing from pulling for example to the bung?
ultimate question, and there isn't a simple answer to it. Some days a fly may only last 5 minutes on the cast, other days it may stay on for 7 hours. All depends on the conditions and the day, the better you get at understanding that, the quicker your success will come.
You said about your leaders, how do you know what size leaders to prepare. I.E. Wind, Still, need to sink or keep high in water? as I'm doing my 1st big comp next Sun
This tends to come with experience and time. You can check the weather forecast before your comp to work this out but most of the time a change of fly can counteract issues with leader (such as sinking to deep or not deep enough etc…)
Another great video again Rhys, quick question on leaders, when you say prepare a leader do you loop the end on the leader or tie it to the fly line loop or braided loop ? For instance on the Cortland mint green there is already a loop so do you loop to loop or tie onto the fly line loop ? I did see a fellow angler have a loop to loop then a ring about 12 inches down with his leader tied to that, just interested how the pro’s do it ? Thanks Gareth
What about colours... is the choice of colour in function of weather? Or wich other influence? Is there a system of sequence , like starting with white , if no fish , black or olive for example?
Water clarity definitely is a factor but there are occasions where you’d assume that white is the right colour in one set of conditions and the fish have an uncanny way of telling you you’re wrong. That’s fishing I suppose. 😃
Nice fishery Forbes the water cleared a lot from practice and the wind got up which messed things up a bit, never dropped a fish in practice but dropped 4 on my first peg 🤦♂️
Take a look at the local fisheries to you as most will run a friendly comp at some point in the year (although covid has brought a complete holt to most competitions)
Hi Rhys Do you sell your own flies online. I have tried tying my own but I just can't get them right. I have tried several sites but the quality is always hit and miss
Hi Rhys, I really fancy getting into competitive fly fishing. Thing that keeps putting me off is “ RULES “ is there anywhere I could possibly find the Stillwater FIPS rules to get a better understanding of fly sizes and bung requirements etc? Thanks
I think I don't have nothing more to say. Only when you're in a good spot take all the chances to catch fish, you will ned it later when you got a not so good spot.

Well said Ollie!
I'm fishing my first competition on the 23rd off May. I'm going to use as many of these tips as possible.
I totally agree about fishermen being a different type of person.
Great as always mate. Totally agree, especially the fish with confidence, and prepare leaders in advance. Makes such a difference.
Be confident and dont worry about what others are doing or what they think ,stick to the plan.👍
confidence is king!
Good content again Rhys keep it up champ
Another cracking video Rhys, well done! Looking forward to the next. Cheers 🎣
Great content as always. Thanks for taking the time to do all these videos........invaluable

I used to do loop to loop. But now simply tie fly line to leader with a double davy
Hi rhys am fishing my first comp at ellerdine in april im abit confused as to what bung would be legal
What type of comp is it John?
@@RhysFishes it's angling trust trout masters
I'm fishing every weekend on the lake they're using last 2 weeks bung is only thing that's really working
Then I think it could be static or sliding bungs 🙂

Hi Rhys
Was the International you fished 4 years ago at Forbes of Kingennie? I fished it with the Irish team that year
It was Garn the year before. but I was also at Forbes that year too.

@@cjmellon4 great fishery!
I've never fished a competition before. What would be a good competition to start with for a novice

Only one tip to give is subscribe to this channel I personally have went from strength to strength many thanks..

Agreed!
What about a lake that you can't practice on? So you are entering the competition blind!
