No one can touch Ella.I saw her live in 1971.She hobbled out on stage with a cane and these coke bottled glasses.Huge backup band behind her.I was just a kid, but was to go on to be a pro musician/singer.I thought. o.m.g.Then she opened her mouth.Sprang to life and sounded like a 20 yr old.Nobody could ever scat like her (maybe Torme) and here she is with Peterson and other greats in the Jazz world.LOVE and Thank You!

Ella was only 54 in 1971 and didn't hobble anywhere at that time.

0:44 she never scatted this song twice the same way. Even the best instrumentalists tend to repeat patterns in solos: then again, there was only one Ella.

do you not hear them applauding? all i see are very respectful people listening to the music. How would they be alive? screaming and clapping their hands? Maybe singing along? I don't see how that is any way respectful to someone focusing on performing.

I can't help but applaud her bravery and this performance for an audience that would not have allowed her into her own concert. This particular clip has weighed on my mind for a while: how can a whole room love the voice but look down on the person? It's foreign to me.
It's always a pleasure to hear her sing. Didn't she have perfect pitch?

She’s so amazing. I’m a Montrealer and my Mom grew up here too She passed away last year at 96. She went to High School with Oscar Peterson’s sister and used to go and see Oscar play at Victoria Hall in Westmount. That was back in the late 1930s early 40s. Apparently we had quite a Jazz scene here at the time. I’m 61 and we’ve always had great shows here. God Bless Ellas spirit and love.

    Pretty heavy...
Ella in her prime, backed up by the Oscar Peterson Trio + 2 ( Eldridge and Jones).
It's great that Herb Ellis got so much solo space, and it's always a privilege to get to see Eldridge (the bridge between Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie) play.
Brown and Jones are brilliant, Peterson supernaturally so.
    They're in Europe somewhere...
Back then, most of Europe always seemed to appreciate our musical contributions more than we, ourselves, did.
