He *did* do civil service, even though he did not enlist to go to Vietnam & he did a lot to help people. Yes, he opposed the involvement in Vietnam, but he was peaceful about it & did not try to "duck out" like SOME people did. He had every right to refuse to serve, too! Religious objection, contentious objection...the Quakers do that all the time & nobody bats an eye. He was (& still is, as far as the history books are concerned) a great man & a great inspiration!
