Cassius Clay vs Henry Cooper 18.6.1963

- The infamous fight between Henry Cooper and Cassius Clay from 1963. Cassius Clay would be knocked down for only the second time in his career and mystery still surrounds exactly how long did he get to recover in between rounds... More info below
Clay would enter with a record of 18-0, Henry Cooper 27-8-1. Henry Cooper had wanted to face current World Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston, but his manager, fearing for his fighters safety against a monster like Liston, would not pursue it. Instead, they accepted the challenge of a young arrogant boxer named Cassius Clay. This was to be Clay's first fight as a pro outside of the United States and his last fight before beating Sonny Liston, becoming World Heavyweight Champion and changing his name to Muhammad Ali. Cassius Clay held little respect for Henry Cooper going into the fight. He claimed Henry a bum, and if he could not beat him in 5 rounds, he would not return to the USA for 30 days. Henry was only a warm up to the brash Cassius Clay. Henry Cooper's record although not great was respectable and he was the reigning Commonwealth and British Heavyweight Champion with 19 of his 27 wins coming by way of KO and most by way of his devastating left hook known as "Enry's ammer". Late in the forth round the young Cassius Clay was floored by the aforementioned punch and saved by the bell ending the round. Although Cassius was able to get to his feet, he was noticeably wobbled and the break between rounds was desperately needed. For Cooper however, it was too little too late. His face a crimson mask, cut wide open from Clay's repeated jabs with a torn glove, the referee had no choice but to end the fight in the following round when Clay turned up the heat. Clay's prediction of a 5th round KO had come to fruition but also a new level of respect for the veteran British boxer, 1 of only 3 men to ever drop Clay/Muhammad in his 61 fight career.
Interesting side note, 3 of the 4 knockdowns Muhammad Ali suffered during his career came by way of a left hook to the jaw... Sonny Banks, Henry Cooper and Joe Frazier. And 3 of those 4 fights in which Ali got knocked down, he went on to win... Chuck Wepner, Sonny Banks and Henry Cooper. - กีฬา

I totally believe that. Henry Cooper scared Ali big time!!

@David McFrost but if you watch Lewis, Joshua and most of those boxers you mentioned have learnt a lot from Ali. They all Stick and Move ( Jab and dance ) even though they could never perfect Ali's movements they still learnt a lot from him . Play Ali Liston first fight and watch Lewis fight they all learnt one thing from him STICK AND MOVE. Only after Ali did people adopt this Technique. It's amazing to me the improvement Clay made and also his physical development between this fight and the Liston fight. The guy who fought Cooper would not have beaten Liston. But he matured a lot in the 5 months between the two fights. Incredible.
Indeed. Looked very beatable in his 10 rounder against Doug Jones too in his previous fight.
He had obviously trained out of his skin for Liston.
Not exactly. The transatlantic satellite picture (relatively new in 1963) distorted the physiques of both fighters.
In the first four rounds, Clay chose to fight Cooper straight up and in close, not moving much at all to his left or right. Bad strategy. After the knockdown, Clay got serious, peppered Henry with the jab, keeping him at a distance and eventually ending the fight. This fight reminded me of the two Leonard-Duran fights. In their fist fight, Leonard chose to slug it out with Duran and lost. In the rematch, Leonard moved a lot better, using his speed and jab for more often and more effectively, frustrating Duran to the point where he said 'no mas.'
Against Liston, Clay kept himself at a distance (Sonny had an 84" reach), moving superbly to his left and to his right, using the jab to great effect, against a fighter who could take him out with one or two punches. Clay split Liston's face open and that forced Sonny to quit. Clay didn't take Cooper seriously, however, he had a great deal of respect (understandably) for Liston.
Let's be honest Liston took a dive in both fights.and Clay/Ali. Was not the greatest heavyweight. But he was the greatest entertainer outside the ring
@@ianr9898 I don't really buy that Liston bagged the first fight. I think he undertrained and believed all the hype of his invincibility. Clay basically kicked his ass and Sonny was humiliated and embarrassed--so he quit. Similar to 'No mas', in a way. The second fight was a different story. He definitely went 'in the tank'. I don't think we'll ever know the whole story...

Ali was the greatest strategic boxer of all time. The very reason he could outsmart the hardest hitter in the business. "The pen will always be mightier than the sword".
@Senior Billy Bull
Judging by your lenghthy rebuttal, if you like, and signing off as a military inductee, your bias in favour of serving in the armed forces, becomes apparent.
I would agree to disagree with you that Ali was coerced in following a certain agenda to appease the media and the personilities you mentioned. I think Ali had the foresight and courage to state "I ain't got no problem with the Vietcong and there would be no justification on my part to fight them". Especially stating that boldly in the very prime years of his boxing success, makes him a person of great integrity.
Anyway, those who were against the illegal war in Vietnam and against the war in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lybia, Syria and so on and so on, gains my utmost respect. Probably for that reason he earned my admirable respect and not for idolising him through the nefarious agenda of the media. I, personally approach the MSM with a jaundiced view, anyway. In fact the people who fell for "weapons of mass destruction" mantra were unwittingly and mindlessly brainwashed to believe that blatant lie spurned by the MSM. Perhaps I should end this conversation with an apt and pertinant book to read by Smedley Butler, viz, 'War is a racket' or a doccie called " All wars are banksters wars".
@Senior Billy Bull
I would concur with a lot you have said, but to reiterate my main point about the smartness about Ali's superior boxing skill is ultimate in his showdown with 'rope-dope' powerhouse George Foreman, who extinguished 'smoking' Joe's career for good. I say that respectably because both Joe Frazier and George Foreman I have the highest regard for not only for their boxing skills but for their humanity as well.

You hate him for NOT being racist against the Vietnamese & other Asians when he said "Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam after so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights?”
&
"I ain't got no quarrel with themViet Cong"
&
"no Vietcong ever called me nigger.”
Furthermore, the things he was saying for a time that prompt you to say that about him was just brainwashing from Elijah Muhammad but the reality was he had all sorts of white people in his corner, literally with Dundee, but also in the Louisville business group that originally backed and funded him.
He had many friends of every race over time, including my one time boss and great man Faz Husain, an Indian from India who took Ali on a tour of India and named his first son Ali after Muhammed. Ali was a pitcher for Michigan baseball.

I've never seen that before, that is a wild fight.
Two of the finest men who ever stepped into the ring. Cassius or Ali always said that was the hardest he’d ever been punched in his career. And when you look at who he fought that is really saying something!
Simon Morris . Nice to hear from someone thinking calmly.
That was some punch wasn't it !

@Seelan Dorasamy that’s the one!
Wonder what he had to say about Earnie Shavers! Haha
That was probably the hardest clean punch ever landed on Ali, but he took a worse beating in the Shavers fight, followed by Norton fight where his jaw was broken and Frazier 1 where he lost his first fight. I’m leaving out the well past his prime fights.
Damn, Cooper was a tough dude and great fighter. I didn't really know that.
First time I've seen the whole fight - the knock down was deserved.
Me too...
He suffered badly with cuts but his boxing skills were up there
Had Cooper got a chance to challenge the champ Sonny Liston before Ali did the following year, he would have had a great chance to beat Liston, who was in decline at this time (1964). Internationally Cooper was/is very much underrated. Unfortunately he got cut so easily and therefore lost some important fights, he otherwise could have won, at least on points.
Coopers management team always said they would let Henry fight Ali every week, but they wouldn’t let him in the same town as Liston let alone the same ring
Cooper himself wanted no part of Liston
For twenty years Ali was an artist.
He floated, danced and out boxed
every opponent. No one has ever
shown the finesse, the style that
was Ali. No one ever will.
He also ate so much leather that it ruined him for his last 20 years of life. The man was great but others have been on his level and will be in the future.
Lennox Lewis was the complete heavyweight.
@Dillon Mcconnell The unbeaten Michael Grant and Akinwande were both bigger than Lewis, Lewis effectively finished their careers. Lewis was old fat and ring rusty and still destroyed Klitschko's face, and many forget he won the last round and took the Ukraine's legs with the last uppercut.
Marciano would have crushed Ali.

CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT WE SEE A YOUNG ALI IN THIS FIGHT I AGREE TOTALY I WOULD SAY THIS WAS HIS TOUGHEST OPPONENT SO FAR , HENRY IMPRESSED THE GREATEST !
@syed fayaz...but in this case he was the luckiest.
IF THAT WAS TODAY AND THE REF HAD GONE TO THE OTHER BOXERS CORNER WHEN HE SHOULD BE COMING OUT OTHER THE BOXER WOULD BE JUMPING UP AND DOWN
Doug Helms Young and still learning... and in his very next fight became World Heavyweight Champion...😊
To add to his Olympic Gold Medal...😊
Many of Cooper's stronger punches narrowly missed his targets due to Ali's ability to steer away (floating like a butterfly). Having said this, Henry Cooper is still a very good fighter. Salute to him.
Left hook power punch should of ended ali for him to get back up is beyond amazing
Ali was carrying his ass
I love this fight as one of the best matches of all time. It was a chess match between two very skilled boxers of very different styles. The highlights for me was Alis incredible jab just relentlessly scoring and wearing down Cooper. And of course Coopers clean as a bolt of lighting punch which really floored Ali and left him wobbly and dazed like no-one else ever achieved when he was in his prime.
Now tell us what happened next after he put him down. Cheers Tippo. UK .GB..
I was at their second fight in 1966 in Highbury Stadium. Henry did well until the fight was stopped in the 6th round in favour of Cassius Clay ( Mohammed Ali). Cooper again sustained a very bad cut over his left eye which required about 16 stitches to close. My mate Conor O Dwyer ( RIP) and I watched from the stand on our binoculars . The ring was situated in the middle of the pitch. Great days. Jimmy
@@jimmyburke6940 Cooper said that between that fight and this one, Clay had learned how to fight inside, and that his clinch was like a vice -- that there was just no give to it. Never. Boxing back then will never come back to us. I lived in the era and there was nothing like it.
Impossible not to love this boy. He is all heart, tip to toe. How would anyone dare to expose himself to deadly punches of cooper, Liston and others that he faced.
He must have been only sixteen or not much older in this match. His style is just beginning to take shape. Will anyone like him be born again in the Millenium? He is there in every one's life story. Ali was the turning point in boxing. With and after him boxing changed for ever. He invented and introduced the new style of dancing, moving and hitting rather than static monotone boxing. Great personality. Immortal. Eternal.
