- Lenovo P52 disassembly and and repaste of the CPU and GPU with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Thermal compound.
Results:
GREAT! As expected temperatures decreased overall, and the lower temperatures allowed the computer to run at a higher clock speed increasing performance.

This is my reference video for repasting. I have followed it for P50, P51 as well.
Note, if your objective is re-pasting, you actually don't need to remove the LCD panel nor remove RAM/wifi card nor remove all the cables. Just loosen the two screws behind the stickers near the each hinge, and the metal frame will come out together attached with the LCD. Of course you need to disconnect the WIFI card antenna cables, the LCD and webcam connectors from the motherboard, but no need to separate LCD or route all the cables.
Unsure if you'll see this comment in the next few hours, but are you saying, I just need to disconnect the cables just to be safe, before removing the frame? To expose the back?
@@aaronjgeorge Are you doing a repaste or something else? For which laptop model? My comment is that you dont need to remove the display and all the cables to get the the fans. I am taling mostly about the WIFI antennas and ther touting. Yes you need to disconnect the cables from the motherboard and wifi card
Hey just wanted to thank you for this video. I had a P51 that was having issues and from reading the solution, I knew it had to be repasted. Your video was extremely helpful and worked. The P51 is slightly different (I had to take out the M2 SSD to get to underlying screw) and maybe 1-2 other screws, but largely the same. Thank you for putting the effort into this video.
I'm thinking of repasting my P51 too. Did it make great changes in the temperature and cooler speed?
@@CasherPD well my P51 wouldn't even boot before I repasted, so the fact that it now boots is a plus! I haven't unthrottled it b/c I think it's at the end of it's life and don't need the turbo for my activities. Wish I could give more info. Sorry.

Thanks for the video! After watching your video a few times, I decided to take the plunge on my P52 and successfully upgraded from stock paste to graphite thermal pads. I did not do extensive pre-/post- benchmarking but it looks like the system is running significantly cooler and quieter.
Your walkthough is perfect!! I'm (anxiously) waiting for my P53. I can't wait to undervolt the CPU/GPU and repaste with the same Kryonaut and upgrade the RAM & SSD (picked lowest possible spec to safe $) so I don't have to open the keyboard again.

I have a P53 but this guide was still helpful. Re-pasting with Kryonaut made a difference of almost 20C under load.
This is fantastic, thank you so much. Your instructions were very easy to follow. I have a P53 and it was fairly similar to disassemble (there was some extra screws or some in different places). Repasting the CPU and GPU made a significant difference in terms in average temperature. No special tools were needed except for a small and thin Philips screw driver and a few guitar picks. Kept track of the screws by taping them near their original location.

Strange that I haven't found this video earlier. Going to order paste and go for this. I use my P52 for gaming and it's thermal throttling all the time.
I really want to remove that mesh underneath. I always use it on a desk, hardly ever in my lap, so should not drag too much dust in. I suspect that it reduces the flow too much, adding noise as well.

Did it now, it was super-easy. (I'm now missing one screw(?!!)). Before doing it, the system was thermal throttling ALL the time. Now it only power throttles, like it should (sadly).
I also removed the mesh, it's just a sticker with holes punched in it, loosened it in a corner and ripped it off. Whole process took less than an hour.
Thank you so much for this video, I blew the F2 fuse, surface mounted 0402, for the display backlight, this was a great help in removing and replacing the motherboard to get it fixed. I also replaced the dried out thermal paste at the same time. Really great help, keep it up! 🙂
I'm pretty tempted to repaste my old P50, however after 6 years of ownership it still maintains about 50C to 60C under full load. Running a -150mv cpu undervolt, and a -100mv on the gpu. Thank you for this

i watched your video near when it came out when I got my p52 and have wanted to repaste my processors but always procrastinated on it since I never really had any thermal issues. recently in summer heat my laptops been thermal throttling a LOT, and gonna be using this video to guide myself. just wanted to say thank you coz its super helpful

Hi Jon! You did a tremendous job with this video, very well explained, very well shot. I repasted my P53 thanks to you and the maintenance manual also, I couldn't thank you enough. The whole process was quite tricky though, especially when it comes to disconnect the tiny connectors. I was able to remove the mesh at the bottom of the fans as easily as a sticker. Now my laptop runs like clockwork.
Great supplement to the HMM! Repasting Thinkpads is easier than many other brands and your vid confirms doing a P52 doesn't suck. When I put another 64GB under my keyboard I'll repaste as well.
Awesome job! I did this on my p52 and it was very easy to follow your video. I also removed the mesh around the intake areas (just use a knife to peel it off) and I got over 20 degrees in improvements! I used Arctic Silver thermal paste for this (I have the 8850H and p3200)

just got myself one... i think that instead of only thermal repaste i will also cut a small hole and install a switch that passes the fans at max speed like I did on my last acer timelineX... in the EC controller ofall the laptops even if you set the fan speed to max they will not run at more than 70% of what they are really capable of...

Relieved my p52 with a Xeon and p2000. I did not order a SSD with it and man it's so sloww with the HDD. Planning on upgrading probably to a 970 evo soon
How have the thermals on your machine been? You could always get a MX500 500GB 2.5" in the midterm?? Speed things way up for about $64.
@@b1n0ry3Oh thermals ok. CPU hits 3.7 - 3.9 on high loads, also I'm staying in India where the options are not soo great, so I plan to wait and catch the 970 Evo on a sale or something. Import duties make everything cost double here.

the mesh is easily removed. I wish my GPU (P3200) ran as cool as my 8850. I am using PTM7950. I may have lost a pad on the GPU side.

Don't find anywhere information about thermal pads, what height it may be? Buy this wonder this year for 750$ with 8950/3200, think it need cleaning, cause temperature don't below 95 in work. Sorry for my bad English.
Why did you not go for Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut instead Kryonaut ? 73W/mK against 12.5W/mK. Notebooks do not have Headspreader and work with fluid metals very well.
I had thought about it. Gallium, which is the main component of conductonaut, while it's reaction with copper is very slow, there still is electron transference. This can be seen from the silver plating that occurs over time. I haven't found anyone that has data on the effects of these conductonaut over a period of 2-3 years yet. Maybe once the laptop isn't under warranty anymore, and I get get a replacement thermal solution on 3rd party sites, I"ll give it a try.
@@b1n0ry3 I used liquid metal "Coollaboratory Liquid Pro" back in 2011 on my laptop and PC. Worked like a charm. "Coollaboratory Liquid Pro" has ONLY 32.6W/mK.
But after 3-4 years, cooling on laptop got worse. I never repasted it because I got a new laptop but I think nothing severe happened. After 1 year I opened my laptop and saw, that the liquid dried out but I didnt bother to repaste because cooling was still fine.
I think liquid metal have a limited durability of 18-24 months and then require repasting. After watching your video, I dont know if I want to disassemble my P72 every (second) year. Too much can go wrong.
Did you archieve undervolting your GPU? If yes, how?
I undervolted and overclocked my i7-8850h. I reached 1304 points in Cinebench R15.

I've noticed Lenovo has a bad habit of randomly changing hardware options on many of their models... Very frustrating!

Hi Jon, what is your experience after almost a year of using P52? Did you have any issues with drivers in general and touchpad latency (I saw this issue over forums)? Is this piece of hardware still worth buying, having in mind using it for CAD and simulations in general? I have good Campus offer, and I am considering to buy P52. Thank you.
6 months using mine, they fixed the mouse latency with the update...
The mesh at the bottom of the fans is easily removed. Just did mine with a pair of tweezers. Its held on by some sort of glue, not particularly strong.
i did this on my previous laptop but it will clog much faster the fins and the fans...
@@ElectronicMarine could be, yes. Although mine is never used on sofas, beds, etc. It's either my own desk, or office desk. Besides, i usually open up my laptops at least once a year, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I was meaning to ask about ram upgrade. I wanna go as cheap as possible then upgrade the ram later on. Is it possible? How many slots are there? I forgot if you said that you had the 4k or 1080 model but can you use the thinkpad pen(or anything other pen, I am a note taker at times) on the 4k touch screen? Thank you for this information video about the device, I am seriously willing to change the thermals a bit and doing so much more. I am glad someone in TH-cam is providing content for this underrated thinkpad :).
The ram is upgradable, so you could just get 8GB stock and upgrade later. There are a total of 4 ram slots. Two under the keyboard, and two under the access panel on the bottom of the laptop. Honestly the price of ram from lenovo compared to ebay or newegg is very close!
I agree with Jon -- the Lenovo RAM was priced about the same as everywhere else so I upgraded the RAM. I did however, go with the cheapest storage option (HDD) and then later added a good SSD.

Hi Jon, what about idle temperature with undervolting and repasting? Did they get any better? One thing that is annoying on this laptop is how hot it feels and how often the loud flans kick in.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. Sadly I am all too familiar with the HMM for the P51 and unfortunately I need more hand holding then the manual provides. Something like your video specifically for the P51 is what I am looking for. I have searched the Earth for one : ) See the links in the following two posts. In the first link the discussion about the P51 occurs half way down. I suppose I could look at the HMM for the P51 and the P52 and see what if any differences I can discern. Thanks again.

It is metal, some magnesium alloy that's quite strong but light.
I wonder if such a thermals are the case for every p52. Mine still on its way to daddy. I guess your p3200 GPU also contribute a lot to the inside weather
Jon, just curious if you see any BSOD issues? I've got the P52 i7-8750H (P1000) and I get one every day or two (different error codes too). Even after undoing the undervolting (your previous specs were good for performance!) the issue persists. Any thoughts?
You know... I have randomly gotten some BSOD's. I think Kernel Heap Corruption was it. Could never pinpoint what caused them. Haven't had any in the last month or so.
Thanks for the reply, @@b1n0ry3. I installed the latest version of the Intel Driver & Support Utility and it identified a few drivers that were out of date that Lenovo Vantage didn't find. I was blocked from updating WiFi or Display drivers but updated the rest and I haven't had a crash in a week. I'm hopeful that solves the issue and maybe this helps someone else.
I think I've been inspired by your video to do my own repaste video. What camera are you using? It seems to handle low light conditions pretty well.

Thanks for the video. Do you think the temperatures might be high do to the motherboard being wrapped in plastic? The plastic blocks the flow and if you touch the bottom surface (remove the lower panel) it is super hot where these plastic is visible. I think they isolate the motherboard to protect it from spills or sand but at the same time they are affecting the air flow significantly. Other laptops are pretty open and you can see the motherboard and they run cool. Thoughts?
I honestly think it's just a poor cooling solution for the cpu and gpu. If you think about it you have a 75W GPU and a 45W CPU trying to be cooled (at full load). That's 120W that needs to be dissipated. What lenovo has in there now is trying it's hardest to keep things cool but really isn't properly spec'd. If you check out th-cam.com/video/hdTsra-uLBI/w-d-xo.html. Linus has a tear down of the MSI GS65 which has (IMO) a much more capable cooling system. You can clearly see just how it's engineered to be able to pull more heat away from the cpu and gpu. I'd love to get in a WS65 from MSI and put it head to head with my P52. That would be a good showdown.
@@b1n0ry3 Hi, thanks for sharing the video from Linus! I think the liquid metal is the way to go. I am too chicken to try that because it is a new machine, and quite expensive. However, there has to be a way to safely apply the compound. I will practice the application on a glass surface to see how it spreads. Also, while the machine is open I want to see if it's possible to safely create a few ventilation openings by cutting the plastic avoiding contact with any metal surface. I know the lower grids are conductive. We will see.

I am deciding to buy the same specification(3200nvidia, i7 8850, 1TB m2) P52 but with 16 GB RAM. My tasks are regarding ANSYS, MATLAB, CAD-based simulations that normally runs for 1 to 2 days (UNSTOPPABLE 24 HOURS).
Please help me to decide whether this is a safe system to go for? as it touches high temperatures (90 DEGREE CELCIUS) easily according to your reviews?

Am curious to know if you know...Would the 4K display in my P50 fit in a P52 with a FullHD display? Could I swap them over successfully?
My guess is no. The cable would be different, and I'm not sure about design wise if they would even be swappable (fit in each others cases)... sorry!
@@b1n0ry3 thank you for your response. I have done some cross-referencing since I asked this and determined that the screens ARE interchangeable between the P50 and the P51 (Same FRU's) but as you say NOT the P52 which has a different set of FRU's
So, what were the results of all this work?
Do you ever experience any input lag when using the trackpad? Like it still moves smoothly, but it lags about 50-100 milliseconds behind whatever your fingers are doing?
I don't use the trackpad that much, but I'll check tonight and see if I notice anything funky. I know you can replace your stock drivers with windows precision drivers to improve the responsiveness. Maybe a good video idea huh?!

Only reball. I believe the last lenovo thinpads that's had socketable cpu's was the T430, T530 and W530's.
Why is this the case? Bad quality paste from the factory?
One question: Some people say that the kryonaut thermal paste dries out quickly. Did you experience any problems so far?
so far temps have been good. Might be worth cracking it open again and checking it out.

It is not. All soldered onto the motherboard.

Have you ever considered that it thermal throttles so much because you are using the 4k panel? This is a mobile workstation and rendering and benchmarking in 4k will sure give such thermal issues. I think the results would be a lot better with a 1080p panel. If you HAVE to do 4k editing on the go then that’s something you will have to accept. I have no experience with AutoCAD or 3D rendering on how much it can stress the machine when full 4k load. One thing I understand is that it is not acceptable to carry around such a big laptop and not have proper cooling!
Did you find anything out about the RAM speed? I was going to get one of these until I saw the 2400mhz vs the P1 running 2666mhz. Mainly looking for to use for video projects. Can you overclock to 2666mhz?
The ram is rated for 2666Mhz, but it only runs at 2400Mhz. No overclocking of the ram is possible but I doubt you'll notice much performance. I use my P52 for video editing and CAD work so it's more than capable.
Is there any chance you could post the model numbers for the fans in the assembly? My gpu fan is on the fritz and I cannot find info on a replacement. Thanks in advance!

@@b1n0ry3 Thanks a ton! I really appreciate it. It seems that the fan is unavailable for purchase anywhere and I just have to take the system to a repair location for them to replace the entire thermal assembly. Hopefully it's covered by the warranty.

I don't really remember! But I know I used a lot of Gelid GC-Extreme around this time period. Now I just use MX-5.

Are you asking can you use your 135w charger instead of 170w? You can use the 135w charger on your P52 but you may experience decreased performance under full CPU and GPU load. It may also prevent your battery from charging under heavy usage.
b1n0ry I work from home, I use 170w charger.When I go outside I bring 135w charger to my mobile device.Outside, I just use simple work like ofice ... affect the hardware of the machine or not but the performance is not too important
Hi there ! I recently changed the thermal paste on my P52 for better thermals with this crazy xeon processor. I noticed that both the CPU and GPU are covered by a thin layer of plastic that is all over the motherboard (probably for better longevity, protection against water, sand etc...) which is pretty cool but I can't help but think that this must be a huge bottleneck for thermal conductivity ! Did anyone tried to remove the plastic on the cpu and gpu with a clean cut around the dies ? I'm also contemplating repasting again this time with liquid metal, any thoughts ? Thank's ! 😁
hopefully the plastic didn't cover the die of the cpu and gpu. That black plastic is there to help prevent water damage if you were to spill something on your laptop
@@b1n0ry3 I'm talking about the very thin layer of transparent plastic, someone told me on a forum it's "conformal coating" and said to leave it there but... I don't know it seems odd
i got the xeon p52 and in a cpu only stress test i only hit 97 3 times and it mostly stays in the high 80's low 90's at times
Also was your text at 97c the whole time at 100% or did it just peak like mine
Update I undervolted my Xeon by
. 090 and it's stable and also set my battery mode to better battery and set my bios power settings to balanced from performance and I'm getting way better temps, in the 70's to low 90' rarely and pretty much not thermal throttling until my cpu decides to go above 4.1 then it'll get 97 and throttle down but it also rarely happens so safe to say I'm good now.

Hey Jon, I'm not really a giant geek and I got a question: can I put my own SSD ( A Kingston 480 gb SSD) in the 2.5-inch drive slot?
You should be able to. But why not go with an SSD in one of the two slots available slots?

@@Didymusartist SSD should be OK in the 2.5" slot. Do you have the Stock HDD in the 2.5" slot? Is it the boot disk? If so, you'll have to clone the disk to the new SSD you want to use before swapping the drive. Although you would be better served to clone to one of the NVMe SSD and make that the boot disk. That's my setup: 2 NVMe SSDs but I left the stock 1TB HDD as "cold" storage for rarely accessed data.
Another question for you Jon - how responsive is the 4K touchscreen? Is it laggy at all?
There is some lag when writing. I couldn't tell you how many ms though. I'm just using my finger not a pen. Overall tap response though you can't tell any lag.

More complicated to open then 7510/ 7520. Look likes the gpu can't be disassembled.
Do the undervolting settings "stick" after you reboot? Or must you run it everytime you restart the laptop?
They don't stick no. You have to reopen the Intel extreme tuning utility and re-apply the undervolt unfortunately.
@@b1n0ry3 Thanks for the response. Also, since you have the 4K touch, can you check if the display is 10-bit? You can check for this under Nvidia Control Panel -> Change resolution -> Output Color Depth, OR you can open up Photoshop, hit CTRL-K and look under Performance -> Advanced Graphics Processor Settings, and see if you can check 30-bit display. @@johntruongpictures No 10bit on the P52 :( If I remember only the P72 has a 10bit 4k display, but don't quote me on that.
@@b1n0ry3 thank you for checking! The P72 is advertised as having a 10-bit, but many owners have reported it is only 8-bit, even looking up the panel part number from AUO confirming that. Very shady.

Advances in tech has progressed so quickly it might not be a bad idea. I could probably sell mine for about half of what I paid, but I don't require a lot of power out of my portables so I might end up just keeping it. Battery life though... more to be desired...
