    Mathieu van der Poel won the 2020 Tour of Flanders, but that was redemption for his 2019 race, where he crashed, chased back, and still finished fourth in the sprint into Oudenaarde. The Dutch national champion on Alpecin-Fenix is targeting a repeat win at the 2021 Tour of Flanders, where he will face off against Belgian rival Wout van Aert of Team Jumbo-Visma.

      Easily a contender for the win that year. Typical VdP, though. Too relaxed, making small mistakes, as he usually can do, because he can compensate with raw power. Except, this time his bike didn't agree with his stunting. ;).

    • @sambarrett4726
      @sambarrett4726 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Wouldn’t have made a difference the bars were loose (you can just about see the wheel wobbling side to side as he holds the bars still). If anything taking both hands off would’ve helped as you’re minimising the force on the loose front end. But then again you’ve obviously gotta brake to slow down to a safe speed so he was doing the right thing by keeping as little weight over the front of the bike whilst simultaneously signalling the mechanical

    This had nothing to do with disc brakes or bad roads or Canyon handlebars. He went onto the sidewalk and had one hand and one foot on the bike while riding with a flat. Don't care how good a rider you are: do exactly what he did 10 times and 9 will end up like this. He *could have* won that race if he'd just stopped and got a new wheel.

    • @brotherfranciz
      @brotherfranciz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it wasn't a flat. You can see the carbon wheel had buckled after he hit the curb, and he had to unclip to keep balance whilst he was slowing down - they are riding in a pro peloton so they'd be going 60kph+. It would be hard to brake/slow down with a buckled wheel as the bike would be wobbling all over the place and the wheel wouldn't be true (as in not rolling straight).

    • @ddthompson42
      @ddthompson42 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brotherfranciz yes, that was after he flattened the tire when he jumped over the curb.
      As I saw it: he jumped a curb and flattened the tire, then moved to the sidewalk to slow down; then hit something (maybe a missing cobble), which caused him to crash. I’m saying that if he had (after getting the flat) stayed on the road and/or kept both hands on the bars, he could have stopped and gotten a new wheel/bike.
