For Second Rodeo, a new brewpub in the Fort Worth Stockyards, I created 50 vintage, illuminated advertising signs from a stack of rotten fence my nephew helped me reclaim.

To be honest, leaving off the 'days' from that sign is exactly right for that sign.
Wesley, if you do not build and sell that sign, then I will!
I thought that was intentional!
I definitely thought that was part of the joke :)
Man, seeing all the different ways you came up with to optimize things was awesome.
Thanks! Haha, I probably spend as much time optimizing and making jigs as I would have spent working without it. But it's easier on the mind.
@@WesleyTreat I'm a programmer by trade, so I understand the need for consistent repeatability. It definitely soothes the mind. :)
You are an absolute machine with these things! I am always impressed with your creativity and attention to detail but just as frequently with your ability to streamline your work and come up with solutions for the repetitive nature of batch work. I always learn something from you. Thanks for sharing with us!
What is there not to love about this video? You have dirt as creamer or sugar, a nail gun that ejects nails, a toilet brush disguised as a drill brush, and a subtle middle finger to haters. The "0 [days] of no dumb" and 50 clocks were just a bonus.
I'm also very happy to see that it looks like you used a dummy battery in the clock mechanism to feed power from the mains source rather than having to swap out a battery every so often.
That brush trick was on point! I love your cinematography and how you make repetitive drilling/nailing captivating.
I see that you too are also a connoisseur of find hand-crafted stain colors. Bravo, my good sir.
Perfect example of work hard, but above all work smart.
I like your brad nailing template. Good, clear thinking. RE: nailer injuries... I feel ya. I had a framing nail spit out the side of a knot and into my thigh. It pinned my quad to the bone, and I couldn't stand up. Yeah, it was about as much fun as it sounds. At the ER, the maintenance guy's face was priceless when he came in and asked "Who asked for the Vice Gri.........eeehhhhheeeewwwww"
Had not see this one. You are a machine. Cranking out the work, and still making it a quality product. Amazing.
The fact that you put the nails in the same place on every frame with a template made my OCD happy
That brush thing. So simple. So genius!
Every time I see there's a new video from you, my tummy tickles a bit.
Your methods for streamlining the batch process are really great time savers! Wearing the gloves on a saw stop equipped saw kind of made me scratch my head.
I have to say that I really like the idea of making stuff with reclaimed materials
That "Project" MUST be done, IMHO! I would love to see it!
"For those of you counting..." That went straight to my soul. LOL
Check out the stud cutting the studs on his studdly SawStop.
When you were nailing the first frame and the way you were holding it, I just kept thinking of Adam Savage on his "Tested" channel. And him always saying " Keep your fingers out of anywhere the nail can deflect and get you". I guess it takes that first one to be more aware of where you have your hands. Hope you are okay. Love your videos.
Yeah, that was was a bit warped and had to press it down flat to the table. That's what got me.
Great film, so well edited. Signs are cool. Nice to see video on production techniques. Mahalo for sharing! : )
I really like the AC Clock movements. I did not know they made that. Great video as usual.
I love the way you edit your videos! You always make it fun. Watching how you work, and your process is always interesting. Awesome video! Thanks :)
You could make a whole video just on making all those different jigs you made. Awesome stuff
Got nailed. Happily it was on the backside of the job. Must say, great video as always. Systematic and ongoing, but your editing makes it absolutely unboring and very joyful to watch. Thanks for sharing.
You won the internet today with that brush on the Shop smith IMO!
Woah. That was a lot of work! They look so nice! I noticed the missing word "days" right away, but it took me until the end of the video to notice that the clocks only had the number 5 all the way around.
Ooh. You should invest in one of those pnumatic nail removers. Looks kinda like a nail gun, but the head of the tool goes over the tip of the nail and fires the nail back out.
You know, as many times as I have told someone to keep fingers out the way when using a nailer, I still make that oppsss moment every now and then
Holy cow! Found your site from watching Jimmy and have learned a ton of neat stuff in just 2 of your YT videos! Thanks for sharing your talents!
I need a poster with a whiteboard section that says "This shop has had without a dumb." That irony is so good.
I used to know a kid also named Wesley who would say that "if god made dirt" phrase. Nicest kid!
Awesome reuse of materials and it's always so satisfying watching the creation of efficient solutions for consistent reproducibility
Love this and all of the custom jigs to make things move along faster!
Very nice to see difference of method between one shots and 50 production. I see a lot more jigs and such. I bet it took quite a while and tiring too.
"Sorry about the focus!"
That's ok, Wes, we all know how easy it is for you to lose focus sometimes.
What an OUTSTANDING idea with the shopsmith. I have one myself. I prefer my table saw, but always looking for new uses for the Shopsmith! Great video, as usual!!!
Been using the AirLocker for a few months now, absolute game changer!
I like the brush idea, will defo get one of those.
First of all, I would like to congratulate you on surviving what must have been seemingly endless repetition. And while I like the design of the sign, the star of this project is all the jigs you made to improve efficiency. Thanks for sharing!
Nice use of the jigs! I was wondering what you were going to do making 50 frames.
Nice job for a saturday afternoon
Wow, need me one of these nail removers! Thanks Wesley!
Pin nailer is both one of the most useful tools and the most deceptively dangerous tools. Up there with the 20v cordless drill/driver which has the weight and torque to seriously jack up your wrist if you are not used to it.
Another great watch.
They say repetitive work sometimes is meditational, but this much wood....I don't know 😅 But that rotating toilet brush machine though - love it!
I'm sincerely impressed how well that scrub brush on your shop smith worked. Love the videos
Very nice job. This project turned out very well. Hopefully this Co. Likes how they turned out and get great use out of them. Keep making. God bless.
Every time I think you've probably outgrown your Shopsmith, you find a new use for the ol' beast. 😁
Really cool. It was very interesting to see the jigs and setups you created to make the batch easier.
Much improved video skills! Looking great all the way around!
Great project - love the use of rotten materials and the smart production!! 💪🏻😎
I was planning on making a similar sign (not quite as complicated) for Xmas and this has given me some construction tips. Simpler this way than what I was thinking. Thanks.
Yeah! You won me back! Thank you.
I've said it before, but you deserve (and will get) substantially more followers here!
How is the printed sign piece created? Paper behind clear acrylic? These came out so great 👍
It was nice seeing the way you batched them out and the jigs you came up with to make the process faster. How long did it take to make them all?
It's always hard to answer that, because I have other projects going on at the same time.
Love your videos, projects and sense of humour. But your eyes, they are so clear and bright, they are mesmerising 💙
Thanks! Good lighting
I learned a number of years ago always to keep my digits a minimum of 2.5" away from where I'm nailing (2" being the max. size of my nails). I learned this the hard way. Ouch! 😵
Great video! Loved the brush in the shopsmith. Great ideas 💡
"This stuff will make you loopy. I'll take this inside with me." Hahaha 10:00
WILSON: “Hi-dee-Ho neighbor-WHAT THE DEVIL HAPPENED TO MY FENCE!?!” 😂😂😂
I have that metal detector but I didn't like the rubber bumpers skidding on the wood so I cut out bits of PEX to wrap over them -- easily slides down even the roughest boards now.
Good idea!
I just found your channel in November 2024. Any chance you'll do another batch of the Furter Burners? They are way cool!
Dude, it's pretty impossible to read your license plate when you go obscuring it like you've done. 😆
Thanks for sharing your project!
OH!!! THAT's what you do with a Shop Smith!!
Your videos are fun and inspiring.
Love the use of the recycled fence. And not sure why I haven't noticed before.... Why does your workshop look like the inside of a frozen ice cave on Hoth?
I'm not 100% sure what you mean, but his shop is a quonset hut, which uses the large ribs for strength and stability.
When ya work with your hands, you're gonna get hurt.. Last month. I had just sharpened and stropped a chisel, and was loosening up the honing guide and it started to fall, and instinct I used my other hand to try and grab it, and caught the blade.. went half way through the palm of my hand.. said a few bad words, glued it shut, and went back to working...
This shop has had "Zero" without an incomplete thought.
It only took twice for me to remember to be aware of where I’m nailing or drilling.
First and last time I used premier was 25 years ago, on a Canon GL1 digital tape.
Thanks for the video. Question: How, and or where did you get the acrylic printed with the image?
Local sign shop with a large flatbed printer 👍
Miss the Jetson table saw
You managed to make a video about making the same box 50 times turbo interesting. Love the edit style. My only complaint is the Jetson's sound is missing from your table saw. Keep up these great videos!
12:50 that just makes it better imo :D
hi man in a shed another spiffing video project
5:56 - also great for taking down the occasional cow
If you're going to declare "DENAILED IT!" ... you really should expect the universe to restore balance and nail you back.
Ha! Great point!!
Dude, I got that same tool last week!!! 😂
20:30 Most satisfying.
I was kinda wondering about that "days" thing. 😅
My newest favorite channel!
Six minutes into the video, and I was thinking "All this reclaimed wood, and not one Paul Jackman name-drop", only for it to come just a few seconds later
Any chance to invoke that cuddly butterball.
By far the best content on TH-cam as always! Well done Wesley. Truly a master. By the way how's your finger 🤣
Great video and project. 8:06 #ShopsmithSighting
Would of loved a finish clock in the background of the time lapses to show how much time really when into this video.
The only safe and effective way to use a shop smith 😂😂😂
Who makes the LEDs? I know Amazon but would like to know what manufacture it is, too many choices! Thanks
I order from Elite LED in Houston. The brand I'm using here is NC LED. Word is you want to look for modules with chips made in Korea, which tend to be superior quality.
@@WesleyTreat awesome thanks for the info!
Another chance to show off the Starbond range and you had to go and use a bandaid instead! I fix my boo-boos with CA and a spritz of accellerator - the sudden intense heat is somehow envigorating and masks the original pain!
great video as always!
A great project, What was the elapsed number of days from start to finish? Sorry - couldn't ask the question without the word "days" 😁
Жду с нетерпением новых видео
Who says super glue doesn't hold? I can build you an entire guitar just with that stuff!
Regards,
Etna.
Seriously if you don't turn the dumb sign without the days into a product or t shirt you've missed an opportunity, lol
Very nicely done! I am also rather curious how much you ended up charging the client for these signs. This seems like it has been an awful lot of work. So it must be several thousands of dollars, including material, labor and overhead?
You have a Shopsmith?
Don’t we all?
Quick question: how do you determine your bottom line when bid a job or are commissioned for a job? I have been asked to create a few pieces for a local business, but I have no clue when it comes to a bid or commissioned price. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Quick Formula:
1. Work out your cost on parts.
2. Add 50% or even double it. (You WILL get dinged by shipping costs, mistakes, unforeseen consumables, and sudden price increases on materials.)
3. Determine your day rate. (Don't forget you pay taxes.)
4. Overestimate how many days it'll take to complete the job. (Beginners especially will underestimate the time it'll take.)
5. Don't be afraid to lose the job after quoting. Don't go in the hole to make a client happy.
You will screw this up a lot in the beginning. I did. Make peace with that before beginning.
@@WesleyTreat thank you Sir! I will send you a sample of my Idea when I can ramp up the production this winter.
Great video, as always. What's the link to the metal detector?
In the video description. Thanks!
@@WesleyTreat Nope, I checked and clicked all the links in the description. The one for the metal detector is missing ;-)
Thanks for adding the link :-)
With the backs being screwed on, I doubt the clocks will ever be updated for daylight savings time, or be working after the first battery dies...
#denailedit I love that nail shooter. So satisfying. Great vid as always!!!!!
It's 5 o'clock somewhere.
I was thinking the numbers should all be eights since a bullride is eight seconds. Then I figured out why it was 5s :s
Interesting tidbit (at least I find it interesting):
In German we say "Kein Bier vor 4" (No beer before 4 o clock)
I find interesting that we can start drinking one hour earlier :)
"Days without a dumb" sign in the merch store when?
8:13 is why I subscribed :)
