The focus will be on incorporating elements such as inversions creatively and for more advanced students, the movements that I learned from Barry Harris.

I learned from Jeb Patton (another great jazz pianist and educator) that shells can be 1-7 or 5-3. I think music school messed a lot of us up. Shells are more than 3-7 in the left hand. Could do a lesson on that, don't ya think? Bud Powell, Monk, and Barry Harris love those really small shells when comping. Really just dyads that create movement within tension and release, no? Important for us guitarists that can't play all those lush harmonies you pianists can play... ***jealous stare***

I think people use the 3-7 as shell because it assumes a bass covers the 1, and 3-7 are the defining notes of the color/quality.
Where using a 1-6 or 1-7 idea is a shell I suppose, but doesn’t convey the full quality of a chord by itself, so those are kinda secondary voicing a that don’t seem to be “shell” to the avg guy idk

my understanding of the shell voicing, which i think of as 1 and 7 typically, is that it gives you the sense of the chord but allows some freedom in terms of tensions and extensions over top. cheers

Cool, thanks! When you did the free example I wanted to hear it be like an intro to end like on an augmented 5 of the key center that would start the tune but really awesome though anyway

Nobody’s done an in-depth practice session on a tune like Airegin and how Barry might approach these minor ii-Vs as well as minor V - i’s.
Can you put a tutorial together?
