Logic issues are Peele's biggest weakness, especially in Us as you stated. Also, his films get a little too wacky. I think he needs someone who is brave enough to, figuratively, look over his shoulder at his work and say "Maybe that's a little too much, boss".

My ranking exactly. You absolutely nail my feelings on Nope too. Works best as a fun Summer horror movie but the parts where it tries to get metaphorical just aren't nearly fleshed out enough to have any place in the movie.

So for NOPE.. You're wrong by saying you want to remove the subplot of the monkey scene.
    (Spoilers)
2 things. It showed us how not looking directly in the eyes of the apex predator is the way to survive. And how the Asian kid and then the adult version still didn't learn from what he did as a kid. He wanted to get greedy and show this spectacle and well it costed him. And also that monkey scene was terrifying to watch man. Loved that it was in there.

  • @KiramidHead
    @KiramidHead ปีที่แล้ว +5

I disagree about the monkey just being there for commentary. It also informs Steven Yuen's character and explains why he does what he does. Don't want to get into spoilers here, but it makes sense upon reflection. It's just weird to me because he's not in the movie *that* much, and he gets more backstory than the leads do.

Great ranking Cody(as always) and exactly the same as mine(as most times). I think Jordan Peele is a good director but some reviewers and media outlets treat him like a god after only one really good movie. They did the same with Taika Watiti and all that clout gave us the awful Thor: Love And Thunder.

    For me….
    1. Nope….it was just a movie made for me. I love this genre and I think it was executed well and fairly uniquely. At least in a way that was different for me. Treating the craft as a thinking entity and the characters were great too.
    2. Us….sure the reveal wasn’t greatly earned but everything leading to it was interesting and fairly scary.
    3. Get Out….this is a movie I need to revisit. I just didn’t “get it”. I understood it…it just wasn’t one I particularly fully liked at the time I saw it. Maybe time will change my mind.

I have only seen us and Get Out. Needless to say, I prefer Get Out. Ranking:
    1) US | Score 3.5/4
    2) Get Out
    Poem/review of Get Out--
I saw 'Get Out' as a non-horror fan
And was struck with greatness, so I began
To pay attention to the fine details,
As there's a lot that 'Get Out' entails.
First we're greeted to a black man
And from this point the story began,
From here the audience gets a guide around
and soon after the story funnels down
To a point so sharp and razor thin
That it cuts deep and evokes from within
A paranoid feeling of distrust towards
The white people brandishing their swords,
They will put on a façade of happy and upbeat
But, even early on we know they are incomplete,
It's all an act to lure Chris in
Because they like (and hate) the color of his skin.
Once he's within, Chris knows somethings wrong
Yet he continues to play along
Which he finds to be a graven mistake
As when he finds out, it's already to late.
Get out is a cut above most horror films:
With naked women and pointless kills
It's even far greater than the best of the best
And I know horror fans would express:
"Even Psycho, Alien and all the best?"
To which I give a definitive, "Yes!"

like this ranking. First hearing of get out was a breakdown i saw on youtube. Dr. umar( some of you may know) was talking about. I remember being intriged, I watched the trailer afterwards. First viewing was a blur, but the second time around I saw with friends. Had a discussion at the end. Us I wanted to see in theater but wasn't able to. 2019 was not a good year for me anyway. Watched on internet and liked it. the first half is good. third act i can see people having issues there. Nope im going next saturday to see. I'm liking the reviews on so far. Like jordan peele.

Having rewatched Us and Get Out before seeing Nope this weekend, I can wholeheartedly agree with your ranking.
3). "Us" has a great first half, with outstanding performances, especially from Lupita (something all of his movies have), and a terrific home-invasion premise (the scariest thing in the whole movie was probably that the kids didn't know what "Home Alone" was!). But upon rewatch, my initial impressions didn't change: while it's scarier and more intense than Get Out, once it moves past that first half and we see that this is a world-wide epidemic, it loses the novelty of a small-scale home invasion story. There were also still WAY too many metaphors that he uses to get his point across. Despite the big reveals in the third act, I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to buy into the logic of how the tunnels worked, etc. 6.8/10
2). Keep in mind that I've only seen "Nope" one time as of this viewing, but it's not only his most ambitious, but one of Peele's more accessible films. He effectively pays homage to movies like Jaws, Signs, and Close Encounters, even turning it into a Western in the second half. It's easily his funniest, even if the humor isn't as frequent or laugh-out-loud as in "Get Out". I saw it in IMAX, which obviously made me appreciate the 65mm style of old-school filmmaking he was going for, not to mention the spectacle, but the fantastic sound design. The performances, especially from Keke Palmer, were great, and even though Kaluuya was more stoic, it made sense for his character. And it was also unnerving (if not scary) in places. But the big problem with the movie is what I found frustrating in "Us": Peele is a better filmmaker than storyteller, and it shows because he keeps mining for these metaphors that are clearly trying to make a point. Unfortunately, the specific one introduced in the very first scene, while relevant, is dropped completely in the second half after being built up for the whole first half. It was also a bit too long and ended on a rather anticlimactic note. But I would revisit this sooner than "Us", because I feel like this one might benefit more from rewatch more than that one. 7.5/10
1). Of course, you knew it was gonna be "Get Out". The first time I watched this, I was rather disappointed and a bit confused. Upon rewatch, though, it really is the sort of movie that invites comparisons to "Meet the Parents" and was actually inspired by the classic "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". It actually helps that it's Peele's most straightforward and simple premise, and we feel as uncomfortable and awkward as Daniel Kaluuya in these situations. It's like watching that Dinner Party episode of The Office, only with black characters. He's a very likeable and charming protagonist forced into these scenarios, and the acting across the board is solid, and I bet anything that the Lil Rey Howery character was inspired by the K&P TSA sketch; he's so hilarious. Sure, it's not a perfect movie, and you get a lot of horror cliches in the second half, but it's the most rewatchable of the bunch. 7.7/10

I think Us is his best.. I understand what you mean by you can't turn off your logic side haha. But to me, all of those things you don't like is what makes the movie more fun.. like when you said if you took off in a plane where would the doppelganger go. I can see it just spiraling uncontrollably underground and losing its shit haha. For me those movies are so fun that you really have to use your imagination on some things. But for me why i love Us so much is the messages. How we are our own worst enemy. How we basically have to types of us. One can be good and one can be bad. Also loved how you can also think of it like 2 classes. We are the more superior and then you have the less superior class. And how we take our normal life for granted and how there's lots of people out there that aren't as fortunate as us to live a normal life. They are basically hidden from society.
Last thing.. so when i rewatched Us yesterday and when I saw the time "11:11" it make me think of the the people of the Hands across America because those ones looks like people holding hands. Again things like this is what i love about movies.

I think Jordan Peele is one fascinating director. So Fascinating to the point where I would put him in the Top 5 best directors of all time including John Carpenter,Wes Craven,Quentin Tarantino, and John Hughes. He has such a brilliant mind set to create these very original horror films and putting a unique spin on it. I love all 3 of his films and really excited to see what else he pulls out of his sleeve. Here is my ranking
(SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN ANY OF THESE!!!!)
3.Get Out- You're probably thinking im insane for putting this last. But just because it's last doesn't mean it's not a brilliant cinematic masterpiece. Us was technically my first film when I was introduced to Jordan Peele so after that experience,I had to see this. I hate I was late on the film by 2 fucking years but I absolutely loved it. The cinematography, acting, story, twist,It was just unbelievable. The lead was so badass and I simply just had fun with how his character was nervous for who he was and not realizing what would happen next. Like I said, Just because it's last, doesn't mean it's bad. I was just a little late to not have an impact like many others did.
2.Nope-for a sci-fi film,I did not expect the unexpected. This movie genuinely suprised me. I absolutely loved the fact how they turn the tables and instead of aliens in the UFO,The UFO is the alien. The movie has a great cast, never left me bored or uninvested and was more disturbing and eerie than I expected. My only complaint is there is a small traumatic backstory that opens in the film and later in that really doesn't go anywhere. The certain characters end up dying anyway later. I understand the film wanted to open with a bang which is fine. I didn't mind it,but it was just there.
1.Us- Ya'll probably hate me for this but I fucking love this film. I've watched it so many times and have never been tired of it. The reason why it's number 1 is because it was my first Jordan Peele film and first impressions to a certain filmmaker always leave an impact on you the most. It's a movie where i try not to think so hard because if you do,the film will fall to peices. The twist may seem a little to on the nose but I am one of those people that can easily get past it. I love the doppelgangers. The cast (Mainly Lupita Nyongo) did a fantastic job portraying both sides of themselves. It's just a film I can put on and enjoy for how fun, badass, and ridiculously awesome it is.

Top 5 is a massive stretch man, not disrespecting your opinion but top 5 for only directing 3 movies is wild, I think it’s a hard case of recency bias, hope he continues to put out unique movies though he definitely has skill

@@TreYSlippY I get it. It sounds very stupid and ridiculous but his films really stand out. Maybe I might have over exaggerated,a more reasonable rank would be in top 10. I still think he has huge talent creating these original storylines.

Get out is the only decent film by this dude. I liked it a lot when it first came out, but after seeing Us and Nope I’m starting to wonder how good Get Out really is. Peel has become the new M Night, he started out his career with a great flick and has slowly gone downhill ever since. Nope fucking sucked for real.
