    The reason the monkey plot was in there was to show how jupe didn’t learn his lesson. It was also in there to show the exploitation of animals on film and how society will love animals as spectacles but when those animals do their animal type instincts people are surprised lol.

    Full disclosure - I am slightly biased because I love anything with a 1950s style flying saucer but the subversive layers is what did it for me. What I haven’t seen mentioned too much is the idea that “if you look at it it will get you” - not only does this apply to animals sensing fear but also how we engage with news and social media. Another big epiphany for me for this movie in the horror genre is the Bible verse about spectacle and how we clamor to see disturbing or horrifying things for clout, yet we are paying to see a horror movie - truly meta.

    I saw it this weekend and for the record, this has to be something I felt that was completely out of the norm for Jordan Peele. The movie itself was eerie, weird and all are kinda give you chilling vibes. This was indeed a slow burn, very slow burn, but for me it did pay it off.
    The chimp scene was kinda weird and didn’t seem to fit the main plot of the movie, but it was more to build the character of Jupe, so his trauma he face was more to exploit it for profit, that’s the main thing I kinda got, but I wanted to know more. The details were a little vague.
    The raining scene in it was probably the scariest scene for me. That scene just gave me the creeps

    As for Oj’s character being bland was the intention how he’s different from other characters from the movie. He’s deadpan, doesn’t care about fame (doesn’t look at the camera when filming the commercial), technology (he still uses a flip phone), and sees the world differently from the rest of the characters which is how he’s able to know not to look at Jean Jacket. His character is the voice of reason behind the message of the movie, greed. Obsessing over fame and fortune can destroy you which it did for the tmz guy, Antlers, and Jupe

    First off, I want to say that I get how you feel about this film,( I think my husband felt the same way) and I respect your feeling.
    I disagree with you about Daniel Kahluya’s performance ( my apologies , I’m sure I misspelled his last name) . I felt his quiet was needed . The balance . Emerald and Angel were the high energy. All three would have been too much. Plus, his character handled the horses; that quiet is necessary.
    As for Gordy, yes it did fit in. I think the presence of the alien force, along with the fact that he had been pushed to his limit to perform. Don’t forget about the girl’s shoe standing on end. Little former zookeeper’s nit picking; please don’t call a chimpanzee a monkey. Monkeys have tails. Sorry , it drives me crazy. Sorry about that.

    Great review, Lee. You always give a movie and its director a fair shake and you avoid the masterpiece or rubbish extremes many reviewers fall in love with at times.

  • @BTT16
    @BTT16 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Yeah, this film was more of a character study rather than a full blown sci-fi thriller. It wasn't about the "Threat" as much as it was about the hubris of a few of these characters. The Gordy the chimp story was connected to the main plot by way of Ricky "Jupe" Park's exploitation of the "Alien threat". He didn't learn from his past incident with Gordy, and decided to use his childhood fame as a money making scheme, along with trying to make the Alien threat into a spectacle, which you can pretty much assume from the trailer. Although the movie wasn't a complete home run for me, I really appreciate the layers of symbolism, and the time it takes with the atmosphere and characters. You're super right about Kaluuya...he's such a great actor but mumbled most of the movie, while Keke Palmer's mouth was running a mile a minute. I know Kaluuya's character OJ is a very reserved character, but sweet jeebus show us a bit more emotion! Overall, coming out of the theater I liked the film, the symbolism and technical aspects mostly. I also liked the simplicity of the "Threat" and what it possibly could be, even though the film doesn't dwell on it.

    • @iagrim01
      @iagrim01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I get where you’re coming from, but I actually quite like Kaluuya’s performance. I found it to be subtle and reserved, which makes sense for his character. Also, I feel he did great with silence and complemented Keke’s energy well. Besides that I agree with your take aways. The technical aspects were especially impressive!

    • @jimdiggs6959
      @jimdiggs6959 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understood the symbolism and foreshadowing of the Gordy show and how it tied to Ricky’s cowboy show. Conversely, OJ’s mishap with Lucky at the commercial also drove home the same idea/theme. OJ, however, learned something from the experience - regardless how random, forced and unconvincing I found said lesson.
      But Ricky (spoilers ahead) was gone half way through our story and the Gordy incident proved pointless beyond mirroring the cowboy show/movie. The doomed sitcom was the most riveting segment in the movie and it’s connection to our story was removed at the half way point without any sort of purpose ever revealed for its inclusion.
      I liked the characters and the basic premise, and the movie looked great. I just found the motivations and decisions of those characters forced and unconvincing. Everything from the point Ricky disappeared felt random and purposeless. The lack of cohesion and clearly defined stakes left me feeling uninvolved and disinterested.
      I admire certain aspects of the film and would rate it in the C+ range. But mostly view it as a missed opportunity and a letdown.

    I love Get Out, and in some ways Us actually surpasses it. What I really like about Nope is the way it kept me engaged without underestimating my intelligence. When I watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind four years ago, I had the same reaction that you exhibited to Nope. (I haven't seen it since then. Until I do, this opinion still stands). Nope is obviously inspired by Spielberg's classic, but it kept me interested through its combination of quirky characters, terrific performances, and tense sequences that increased the mystery of the alien entity. It didn't need large-scale action to be exciting. Unlike you, I've only seen it once, so there are certain matters that warrant at least one more viewing on my part. Namely, the chimpanzee and the film's whole ending. Overall, though, I thought Peele did a great job of straddling the line between dumb sci-fi action pic and pretentious borefest.

    This movie is like a Cloverfield movie with a very basic Jaws outline. Rather than a husband and wife, we have OJ and Emerald. The Fry's Electronics guy is Hooper. Michael Wincott's character is Quint. He even dies in the final act of "chasing" the monster. Jupe was the Amity boaters thinking they could stand a chance against the monster because they think they know what they're doing. We also get a false flag scene with the fake grey aliens. In Jaws there were kids with fake shark fins. In the end, the monster is defeated with an explosion via compressed oxygen.

      Get Out was his big crowd-pleasing thriller, while Us and Nope are both a lot more psychological and cerebral. The latter two require multiple watches and close analysis before you can make up your mind.

    This movie should have been called Why? As in, why did the creative team think this was a good idea? I just kept thinking "Why are these people the way they are? Why are they doing this?" The entire premise and character set up were so forced. Get Out was a preposterous set up that succeeded because the characters felt real - I bought into it. Everything and everyone in Nope were so contrived and out of place in their own movie

    I thought there were some incredible moments of tension in this film. The scene where OJ is checking out the stables and (***spoiler **) you see the "aliens ", the scene with Gordy, and the scene with all the rain and the blood dripping down the house. It's a shame the rest of the film didn't live up to those scenes for me.

    The scene that won me over was the crowd abduction. Because the following scene was so claustrophobic in IMAX. Plus the confusing delivery: pink walls that look like a giant parachute or bounce house…but they’re moving. And they’re contracting. And then you see the half digested horse and you realize where you are.
    Honestly, I will probably end up watching this movie once or twice a year again. Less than US though or Get Out. Get Out is better quality and Us works faster

    I think the comment on OJ not caring about his job and being boring isn’t entirely accurate. The boring part is warranted, he’s definitely far from charismatic. However, he repeatedly shows how passionate he is both about his fathers legacy and the horses themselves. On multiple occasions, Emerald wants to leave and not look back, but OJ is the one to convince her to stay by defending the horses and what his father built from the ground up. On the same vein, I think saying it’s boring is a stretch, and I think the build up is in line with Spielberg films such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind or Jaws. I think the slow burn and gradual reveal make the twist pay off more and although the ending is polarizing I think it was incredibly artistic, as was the rest of the movie. Overall I don’t think it’s comparable to any other Peele film, but that doesn’t necessarily make it bad.

    I watched this a second time recently myself and really enjoyed it both times. I'm sorry you didn't feel the same but I can also see how this one was more likely to divide audiences. Rather than repeat what others have already stated, I will simply say I liked the characters, the monster, and the themes of spectacle and exploitation.
    It may not be as heavy as Get Out or Us, and has more of a crowd-pleasing tone compared to those other two, but I'll take it. Hell, Michael Wincott reciting The Purple People Eater was worth the price of admission alone. 8/10 for me.

    Hate you didn't get into it. Honestly, gave the film somewhere between a 7 and an 8. For one, I did love the cinematography and the acting choices. I also loved the soundtrack and the twist was one I liked, albeit it does dip into more abstract. Narrative wise, I agree that it is not as strong as Get Out's tighter writing where it feels like there were some aspects that were missing such as Ricky's backstory. However, at the same time, I feel that it was likely intentional on Peele's part. Like I got the gist of the characters and situation such as the scene regarding the chimp.
    Thematically, the chimpanzee is much like the UFO and the horses where they are disrespected and made to perform for a profit only for them to snap and go savage. Ricky's backstory at first would seem to be irrelevant to the film, but at the same time, we get the sense that he was traumatized but still wanted to have his chance in the spotlight after his career was ruined and he makes the drastic mistake of not learning after what happened with the Gordy incident. He had some sense that he was able to control animals because of how Gordy was going to do the exploding fist bump with him before getting euthanized, and I feel that even without getting a full story on him, it overall isn't the point.

    the point of the chimp is the Chimp is a mirror of The Alien Jean Jacket, The industry uses the monkey as a source of income and the tragedy is exploited, SNL makes a skit on the horrific tragedy, Jupe is renting out his room which is a memorabilia of the tragedy.
    But when Jupe grows up, he finds the alien, and uses the animal as a source of income due to it using animal sacrifices, and suddenly they do something wrong and the alien turns on them killing them all.
    The thing that set the monkey off was a balloon, the thing that killed the alien was the balloon. When it comes to the “plot” the monkey scenes further a lot actually, it reinstated the main message of the movie which is the exploitation in the industry.
    Saying you don’t like the movie is chill, on my first viewing i had no fucking clue what i just watched. The movie is a psychological thriller that makes you think and makes you uncomfortable the entire film. Once i started thinking about it, and understanding. I liked the movie a lot more.
    The only thing i don’t get is how you said OJ’s character is boring, he’s dealing with the loss of his father and he was already a quiet reserved guy beforehand, as the movie goes on he becomes more and more vocal, his reactions seem weird because he is extremely methodical, not very emotionally reactive, i mean hell he came up with most of the plan in the final act
    All in all i respect your opinion, but i just think you don’t entirely understand a lot of the movie
