      I think that’s why he didn’t get it? He is literally the person obsessed with Spectacle. He is basically the TMZ guy on the motorcycle. Chasing the spectacle for fame, fortune, and celebrity. This film is partly about us and social media (tik-tok, IG, twitter, etc.) in general. Whether we realize it or not we are all somewhat drawn to the spectacle and it may lead to our undoing one day- if it hasn’t started already.

    Something that I'll add that I feel is important about OJ as a character is that he gives off neurodivergent vibes. I'm not the only one who's noticed this either, but it's nice to see a hero who isn't super charismatic and and loud. OJ is more quiet, reserved, he opens up around his family and those he knows but you can see him close up around strangers. When giving the safety meeting at the start of the film you see he has trouble making eye contact with the other staff members, he speaks low, he stumbles over the words. As soon as Emerald steps in he shuts out the rest of the world and focuses only on Lucky.
    People are so used to movie protagonists being like Emerald, but we need people like OJ too. Some people struggle with social situations, and that's fine. It makes OJ more believable, more interesting, and more relatable.

      interesting, but I would say that OJ is just shy, and not used to doing the talking, as that clearly was his father's role, and now that of his sister's. The idea that shyness is now being seen as 'neurodivergent' is a little troubling... I do see the value of the rest of your point, though and second it. We need more lead characters who are reserved, thoughtful and introverted. Not every 'hero' has to be a charming, charismatic extrovert.

    • @ft4709
      @ft4709 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That‘s how I understood him as well. It‘s still a nonsensical argument because in the context of the movie that‘s literally what happened. A guy did indeed die from a quarter. It‘s clearly visible and there‘s really no other explanation for his death. Plus OJ starts questioning where that quarter came from once he spots the UFO but a regular person wouldn‘t just assume that the quarter was send down by an alien creature resembling a UFO if an airplane is the more sensible assumption.

    • @garrettspikes1267
      @garrettspikes1267 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ft4709 no I don’t think anyones debating he died from the quarter as he clearly did, and OJ might have suspected it came from a UFO but one would assume that others in the area would find it strange a man was killed by a quarter from the sky as that’s not something I’ve ever heard of happening.

      @@garrettspikes1267 Sure they‘d find it strange. Pretty sure that comes across in the movie. People, especially OJ, is confused by his fathers death. So what now? You investigate what exactly? OJ? What motivation is there for him to kill his father? And how and why would one kill a man by shooting a quarter into someone‘s eye? It being a weird-ass coincidence is the most logical explanation. Besides, what is Logan‘s point here? Does he wish for there to be a scene in which the police shows up and interrogates OJ? Such a scene would serve no other purpose than to elaborate what we already know. It would just exist to fill a plot hole that’s not actually a plot hole. We could just as well assume an investigation took place off screen during the titel sequence.

    • @dragongirl89115
      @dragongirl89115 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      At the start of the film it's mentioned that the authorities theorized it from from a passing plane. Basically people dumping stuff down the toilet. After OJ first sees J.J. he mentions this again to Emerald, stating how this idea didn't make sense to him since airplanes don't even pass over their area. It's not that people didn't question how this happened, it's just that they came up with the most logical reason and brushed it off as a freak accident.

    Jean Jacket and The Thing are both shapeshifters. While JJ is not able to take human form like The Thing, we see it's "true form" at the end of the movie and it's definitely not just a flying saucer or a cloud and is able to make itself into various different shapes. JJ and The Thing are also both unable to digest metal and spits them out. Maybe I'm reading to far into this but this is what came to mind watching the video and the movie. As for the shoe, I totally agree with the "Bad Miracle" interpretation but also, Jordan Peele is the master of incorporation of movie/music/pop cultural references. The shoe looks remarkably similar to the spaceship in the movie "Arrival". I think it was a direct nod to that film. As for the woman with the veil being there, the whole narrative is based off of the true story of a woman who had her face ripped off by her friend's pet chimp and then went on Oprah and was terribly exploited when she showed her face. The whole Gordy story is a very obvious and direct reference to the event and I LOVED how capturing the alien on film was named the "Oprah Shot". I mean, I'll admit that I wasn't that enthralled with Nope after I saw it but just like after I saw Us (and was somewhat disappointed after Get Out), I could not stop thinking about it!!! This is a movie (like Us) that demands multiple viewings and the watcher actually benefits from seeing it more than once. I am almost 100% sure that I am going to really start to appreciate it after a second watch. I think many films are made to bring the viewer back and watch it again because it's actually BETTER when you know the basic plot, premise and ending! But hey, it's not like I'm looking to Logan Paul for movie reviews or recommendations anyways!!!

    • @lifeisactuallyveryboring.7771

      Watch it again. So many metaphors in the film. Like when they eat at that burger joint after their second encounter with Jean Jacket. In the background you see a racial physical exchange outside the restaurant. And when they plan on encountering the alien again, they use monopoly pieces on the local map, a slight hint to them chasing money, or something like that idea.

      @Ryoung404 you're referencing three different scenes at different points in the movie. The people screaming while it was over the house were the 40 people from Jupe's show who got sucked up, and the lights going out over the show were from a dress rehearsal they were doing where they presumably fed it one of the horses OJ had sold Jupe earlier.
      Jupe treated the creature like Steve Irwin treated crocodiles. Supposedly, if crocodiles are fed or you feed them a chicken when you are in the enclosure with them, they won't go after you as a person. He figured as long as the horse was there as bait and food, he could lure it out to eat the horse and it wouldn't be interested in the people. But the plan backfired spectacularly.

I have to watch it again, but I thought it was a distinct possibility. If it is the first show, I guess not. But if it is not, then why wouldn't the attendees be talking to the media? Why wouldn't there be talk of something happening at Jupiter's Claim? The other question would be if Jupiter is feeding the alien horses, why the hell would he be buying such expensive horses and not just knackered cows or something? I mean, these horses would cost tens of thousands of dollars, I believe. Not just horses, but trained stunt horses. That is the only part that doesn't add up for me. I guess one possibility is that the horses needed to be beautiful (for the spectacle/show aspect) and the timing of their sale was convenient. Poor horses... ☹

    I may be reaching but on my second watch I realized that the three movie cameras at the set where Gordy is mauling the woman have two black dots/mechanical pieces that highly resemble the oblong alien masks with two little dots. I don't think there is a massive connection between the two but he has three kids. idk. Three kids with alien masks. Three cameras at the studio. There's three cameras used throughout the film (security, cinematographers film camera, and the flashing well). Three main characters. Three phases of the alien, : cloud, ufo, balloon octopus. It creates an electromagnetic field that protects it from the various intelligent life it may encounter as it travels the galaxy, but it doesn't really understand the ability in any meaningful depth. The Barbie ferreira question is understandable, but to me her inclusion just reflects the movies themes (like Logan Paul does) her entire career is a spectactle... she is an unconventional model, that was able to transition to acting... iits a miracle, it would be for anyone, but its also something that can be repeated, in the same way Jupes career is created in a similar way transitioning to films, then theme parks, then alien viewings. Whats most important though is that for any other things to work they have to be some kind of miracle

    Ghost was the name of the white horse that is the first to disappear from the ranch. I think it's the same horse Otis Sr. is sitting on at the beginning of the film.

    Hi! I'm a new subscriber. Totally enjoyed your breakdown. On another site it was mentioned that Gordy didn't attack Jupe because he didn't have direct eye contact due to the cloth in his line of vision; and Jupe was distracted by the shoe standing up. I believe that the shoe is not important. It was a distraction for Jupe and for us the audience. Not important.

    If I'm being honest, I walked out of the theater very confused. After watching a 2nd time though, I quickly realized how much of a masterpiece this film really is. With that, I can literally talk about all the different facets of it for hours. But for anyone who didn't like it, I have one question.... SPOILER:
    When you first saw that thing flying through the sky, what did you think it was made of? I already know the answer bc you thought the same thing that we all did....metal. You thought that it was a vehicle, piloted by little green men w/purple antennas. That reason alone should be good enough.

    Point #8 i agree with u, but it's also very lame when producers put in actors as a cameo and give them 1 line. Why, well because they feel wronged when they are "PORTRAYED" to be a substaintial part of the movie and then end up just being a marketing ploy.

  • @tammyd.970
    @tammyd.970 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Hey Narwhal I appreciate this analysis. So few people put any emphasis on this whole movie being about humans and their interactions with other animals. It might as well be a thesis for critical animal studies. Jean Jacket is just an animal, just as Gordy, the horses and human characters in the film are. There is no 'wild' or 'tamed'. A chimp is a chimp. At the same time, the movie is all about movie making, and the use of other animals throughout that entire history. The title cards (Ghost *is* a horse, by the by) evoke silent movies, or more arthouse films that display their artifice through the text titles of chapters. It also places a non-human animal as the subject, very much what films have not done throughout history. Peele destabilizes quite a lot in this film.
    He also brings back the Black cowboy, a part of history that has been scrubbed, just as with the black jockey. OJ is a cowboy. He embodies the cowboy as created by Hollywood, and what we as the audience perceive as a 'cowboy'. He also, however, is the only character that meets 'animal to animal' with Jean Jacket. He gives the alien a name, further allowing him/her an identity and personhood. He establishes JJ's routines, likes, dislikes, etc. and how to interact with him successfully, i.e. without dying. OJ embraces the fact that he himself is an animal. His reserved nature and physical communication over verbal matches many people who work intimately with other animals. Mr. Paul's criticism of Kaluuya's 'vanilla acting' is just a very superficial observation of the actor's work. Kaluuya's performance is quite fitting to the character, but also draws a stark contrast to his sister and the other characters and how they choose to understand and respond to this animal in the sky. Everyone would have died without Otis, the alien whisperer.
    There are so many things to think about, so many questions. Why was the sho standing up? To denote an anomaly, a flux, a paradox, a mystery. We don't know, and that is the whole point. It drives us. We *want* to know. The whole 'Nope' thing is the decision to NOT look, to NOT know. OJ rejects the desire to look at the spectacle in the sky, the thing he fears. He just says, 'nope, I'm not doing it.' Everyone is gobsmacked, looking at the thing of terror. One could argue that this is also about the spectacle of violence, and of violent acts against specifically Black Americans. The black history theme is already there. What happens when we choose to view these images of violent acts? This is also posed by the documentary maker while watching his animal on animal violence film clips. I don't have this worked out yet, but there is definitely something there.
    There is just so, so much in this film, I just can't see how anyone can conclude that it sucks. You can not like it, but to say it is not a meaningful film is, well, dumb. One can layer so many different topics onto this film and it all makes sense. There are so many discussions woven into 'Nope'. That to me is the sign of a meaningful contribution to the collective.

    look man I just watched this movie and I have my own questions about it. I’m not going to defend whichever Paul brother made this review but I do think it’s a bad sign when someone has to do research or homework on your movie to make full sense of it. Like movies can be complicated and need further digging into but even if you don’t understand you can still get a sense of whether all the themes work and relate to each other well. My personal opinion, my opinion, the thoughts and feelings inside of my mind, again just to clarify my opinion. Is that the movie was good but it’s weaker moments came whenever I felt like there was a message or something symbolic because those scenes were done in a way that to me, felt like it was taking time away from the main story instead of complimenting it. Like the scene with the scarred costar threw me off because it reminded me of the “detour” in the movie that never really led anywhere, I genuinely felt like it was shock value for shock value’s sake, just for her to get eaten and die, like okay cool I guess. Also the cinematographer got really weird at the end and I feel like I only think it was weird because that particular moment wasn’t really set up that well. It felt like they cut some of the scenes from that moment in the final edit because the movie acts like we’re supposed to know why he just decided to suddenly lose his mind. It’s a good movie I can’t hate and the highs were definitely high but yeah it also had some speed bumps along the way too

    Logan was right. I don’t know what movie you watched. It was highly pretentious and over indulgent. A lot of subplots and no carry through on the main plot. So many parts that never connected. I could go in in detail but it’s a waste of time. The thing that pissed me off the most was the waste of an iconic Akira shot. That was the moment I hated this movie.

    Movie is absolutely slow and drags around. It's like Tarantino directed it. It's 2022 nobody has time or patience to sit and watch them drag around on screen trying to portray some mystic BS and plant subliminal motives. Peel should have gotten over himself and made a fast paced likable movie about UFOs. This was like a War and Peace drama. Like I watched all Lord Of The Rings combined.

    I don't really like Logan Paul (I don't know much about him though) but that's his opinion. Maybe he could have been a bit more respectful of the work put in the movie (even though I kind of think he was respectful enough) but ultimately that's just his (subjective of course) opinion. I liked "Nope". I liked it first and foremost as a suspenseful thriller (which was visually beautiful too) and missed many of the symbolisms. After looking the film up, I was introduced to its really rich themes. Some of them I liked and said "wow that's deep", others I just considered overanalysing of the movie. But I can't blame anyone that wasn't really invested upon them, or even cared about them. Cinema is an art and is subjective. Yes there are very annoying films that most people would consider bad and many great films that most people consider good. But that doesn't mean all people. I know it's difficult not to get annoyed by someone really disliking a film you loved, and him being vocal about it for reasons you consider "wrong". But as I said art is subjective and his opinion isn't less valid than your or mine. Yes, film critics exist and they know more about Logan Paul about cinema. But just because a movie is considered good by them, doesn't mean you would like it. Isn't there a single movie labelled great by most critics and people that you found boring or just bad? If so then do you believe that you are wrong and your opinion doesn't matter.
    To sum up, I believe your video is unnecessarily harsh on him for this, especially when you start it with a definition of "objectivity" - yes he shouldn't have said objectively slow either. But no, his views aren't just wrong. It would be really hypocritical to say that.
    Lastly I want to say that I am writing this with no malice, and I am sorry if it came off mean. I want to believe that I am just criticising your video respectfully and if you or anyone else wants to reply to me, please do accordingly.

    To be honest, I have no idea who Logan Paul is and I don't care. He is either feigning stupidity to spark a reaction (success!) or he is just truly an idiot. Private idiocy is fine, but as soon as someone displays idiocy to profit from it, I feel free to call it out. Maybe some people just don't deserve to understand and appreciate some films.

    OK I'm up to tweet 2 in this video and already you got something painfully incorrect. Logan isn't asking why the VIEWER wasn't curious about the coin and the key, he's asking why the CHARACTERS were not. Obviously it's clear to the viewer. There are lots of questionable character motivations and reactions in this film. Not off to a good start, mate.
