It's a very difficult program to learn, but I'm not giving up. I keep watching these tutorials over and over, as I slowly progress myself to become better. I've had about 2 years of experience with cameras and movies, and I know that I'll be able to master this too. Every time I look at all the animations, it motivates me to keep going. Patience is mostly the key, to keep working with something like this. I wouldn't say that since I love movies and work with cameras, I shouldn't use this. But I'm learning it, because I want to create stories. I'm gonna tame this motherfucker.

BUG FIX: If none of the three windows at the begining show up and there's only a gray background, go to the windows tab at the top and select layouts, then return to default layout.

After all tutorials from Valve I still dont know how to use this, its all complicated a difficult, I tried to do something, the begining is pretty good but then I dont know what to do next because everything is starting to be more complicated and when I click something everything is ruined. I have a pretty low-end PC, so is there any way to increase framerate/performance? I get, at best, six FPS and it takes anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to load a map. My computer crashed three times trying to activate the "work camera" alone. This seems like a fun program and I just want to know if there's any way I can make it usable for my computer.
The only thing I can think of which will help frame rate is, right click as you would to load map but go to render settings and deselect Progressive Refinement and Ambient Occlusion and click OK. There isn't really anything that can be done for your map load times via software. I would suggest saving up and buying upgrades for your PC, one of the best upgrades for loading times would be a SSD.

Most maps that start with _arena__ will lower you to about 10 FPS. So don't do that. Right click when the map is loaded, and uncheck Enable Lighting and Progressive Refinement. Then in the right-click menu, click Render Settings, and uncheck Ambient Occlusion. Hope it helps.
+The Jaj If you are still having this problem, when you are on SFM go to the top left third along should be "Windows", Click this then go to the bottom of the drop down. You should see layouts Hover over this with your mouse and you should see at the top "Return to default layout" click this and this will resolve your problem. What probably happend is that on your first time using SFM you closed all the windows but yeah this will resolve the empty screen. DW your computer is fine xD

Using a roller ball so no middle key. But this camera is tough to manipulate but you do give good instructions. Problem is going somewhere and not able to get back.

A Pretty good tutorial, Alongside the rest of the Series. Sure the last part (13.3) is a boring bouncing ball animation which alongside 01 is optional.But this took all of the Hard Parts out of SFM, also for me the Movement and Sound are really Important. (if you wanna know what i am making, it's a Tom and Jerry inspired Short called Spy and Pyro)
It's so weird to see the older window outline, despite me understanding that this software is several years old and is probably not something I should be trying to learn. But hey, I learnt how to use the Hammer Editor after a year, so I'm sure I'll be fine.
if you want a walk cycle.. its easy. just lock a foot and move a body not all of them only abs and move your left leg to right the right leg needs to be in left and dont forget about the stand pose but one leg simple eh? because there is no ghost or onion skin and that makes it hard

I hate having to wait for it to update, that took so long, I was forced to animate a project in 2d, and I got that done before it finished updating. At least you didn't have to pay to go crazy mad with this one. Guess music with heavy bass stereo quality has to be done in an external video editor, and actually SFM is seriously strict on voice over compression too.
I'm not on a Mac. I'm glad you're proud that your PC can play video games. My Mac that I have can play all those "PC-exclusive" games too. But mostly when I need to edit video for my job and make a living in the real world, I go onto my Mac, because it gets that done more efficiently. That's just the truth. when I try to load the map SFM freezes... (I have an intel I7 CPU, 4G ram and a GTX 650TiBoost GPU...
oh and after freezing for 1 min. it works normally with the map loaded :)

I have over 500 hours in SFM and I still struggle with getting a 5 second animation done

I'm not on a Mac. I'm glad you're proud that your PC can play video games. My Mac that I have can play all those "PC-exclusive" games too. But mostly when I need to edit video for my job and make a living in the real world, I go onto my Mac, because it gets that done more efficiently. That's just the truth. I never said Mac was better overall than PC, nor visa versa. I love your aggro though bro, keep it up.
