Valve added a feature later on to solve this problem. 1. Right-Click on "sniper" (or whatever class you want to give a weapon) in the Animation Set Editor 2. A drop-down menu should pop up. Click where it says "Add Team Fortress Item" 3. A small window pops up with a list of items for the Sniper (or, again, whichever class you are giving the item to). 4. A search bar should be at the top. Type in the name of the item you wish to give him. Once you click OK, the item will automatically be snapped to whichever part of the body it belongs. You may need to rotate it a bit however, as sometimes the person doesn't hold the item right. This will also work for cosmetics. Hope this helped.
AnErectCock™ Thanks for the help, But I'm trying to make it snap to both hands for an sfm movie, So the sniper can reload the sniper rifle. I appreciate your help though! :)
I'm sorry I'm a bit late but if you are still curious, what you can do is lock the gun to one of the hands like shown in the video and then proceed to lock the other hand to the root of the gun. So what it should work like is say, if the Right hand is the hand controlling the gun, the gun's movement in turn moves the 2nd hand. I'm bad at explaining but I hope you get it.
It took me a week to figure this out but if you cant move the fingers make sure the little arrow next to it is filled in and when you right click right fingers/left fingers the hidden option is not selected otherwise they wont show up
does this "simple animations" technique work with just built in models like TF2 and such? Cause I tried it with other models and it doesnt look like it works
When I have cosmetics on my character, it seems to have issues with the simple rig. sometimes none, or only some of the other bones move relative to it as it should in the video, without, you know, stretching any parts. Also it's a pain to select say, the hand, as it just moves the cosmetic attached to the hand. Did I put the cosmetics on wrong? Was I supposed to also lock the root transforms together? Maybe I should've dragged the cosmetic's bone to that of the scout instead of the other way around?
TheSilverWolf1998 It's most likely that you're selecting the cosmetic itself, and not the characters hand. Try going into the character's bones in the animation set editor and selecting it there.
I can't rig. Please remove the epic fail body movements and add the rig to the model when you set up the model. Please do it before I yell at you on steam.
When you open the right hand sub-folder, click on the arrow symbol to the right (it will be greyed out) and it will turn white. I think the "Selectable" function was replaced by this to make it easier.
They removed that little menu option and moved it. Now there is a little cursor icon on the left side of each body part in the Animation Set Editor (left to the + signs). For most body parts its filled but for the fingers its empty. Click on it and it will become selectable. Hope it helped.
This was the video that made it click for me 5 years ago. I had some prior basic knowledge of stick animation around that time, but I wanted to do 3D animation. And this video made it all click together.
Be thankful, they gave us this tutorial ;and much less, that they released it to us all FOR FREE! If you have problems and you can't figure it out, ask someone who's run into the same problem (or knows how to fix it)! There are MILLIONS (and that's an understatement) or moders all across the world who can help you. Even if that help is in India, you can use google translate! Or just ask the Steam help desk! I'm not saying SFM is perfect fro me, heck I'm still trying to figure out how to get...
Joseph H. Okay, so there are two possible problems that could be going on there. The first one would be that is is the shadows of the map. Just try using "Gamer Controls" (W, A, S, and D) while holding down both sides of the mouse to turn the camera. If it still is just blank and black, try quitting and restarting the program. Select a map, do not load it more than once, it can crash and slow down due to that. Then it will try to not load anything at all. I had several problems earlier that were similar to this. I hope this helped.
I just realized. The intro is the sniper driving the van, but the soldier screams, and then when they crash you see the Heavy's corpse.
The heavy is the sniper's stunt double.

does this "simple animations" technique work with just built in models like TF2 and such? Cause I tried it with other models and it doesnt look like it works
Me: decides my spy is too lonely so gave him a family
People like you deserves the heaven
He already has a family
+TheSilverWolf1998 If you r using a tf2 class you could always instead right click the class and add team fortress 2 item and it does it for you.
I can't rig. Please remove the epic fail body movements and add the rig to the model when you set up the model. Please do it before I yell at you on steam.
Or can someone help?
Thanks!

11:25 could someone help me? I dont have the Option "Selectable"
SAME D:
same problem here
When you open the right hand sub-folder, click on the arrow symbol to the right (it will be greyed out) and it will turn white. I think the "Selectable" function was replaced by this to make it easier.
i used to work by just animating and when i saw this technique it got a lot easier. thanks
In 6:09 Doesn't work!, how to fix with this rig?
6:14 somehow it doesn't work for me
They removed that little menu option and moved it.
And this video made it all click together.
good tutorial I love it you explain everything very clear and you go at a good speed that I can understand you
That intro is my favorite ever
Be thankful, they gave us this tutorial ;and much less, that they released it to us all FOR FREE! If you have problems and you can't figure it out, ask someone who's run into the same problem (or knows how to fix it)! There are MILLIONS (and that's an understatement) or moders all across the world who can help you. Even if that help is in India, you can use google translate! Or just ask the Steam help desk! I'm not saying SFM is perfect fro me, heck I'm still trying to figure out how to get...
Whenever i load a map a black screen just appears. I tried to move around but nothing happens. Please Help!
I hope this helped.
ok thanks!
this guy's voice is so damn relaxing
when I hold down ctrl and left click to move hips, i just get a White Line drawn. What am i miss clicking here?
