    • @velatoget
      @velatoget 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

@@johnwilson5783 You do realize Roundup and other Monsanto (actually, Bayer, since Bayer owns Monsanto) products end up in higher quantities, concentrated in animal products, right? Granted, I do not eat Beyond meat. It's too processed for me, I like whole foods. But you'd be kidding yourself if you think beef is so much better. Livestock has significantly lower food standards than humans, and they are fed massive doses of Bayer poison. The cows used for milk are also injected with Bayer hormones such as rBST/rBGH. Furthermore, cows, chickens, fish, all naturally have tons of estrogen, which is far closer to human estrogen than plan phytoestrogens.
If you're worried about Bayer/Monsanto, always buy organic, no hormones added, pasture-raised animal products -- . And if you're worried about hormones then your best bet is upping your plant intake, and reducing your animal product intake, because you absolutely cannot avoid harmful hormones in any animal product -- they are animals, thus they have animal hormones.

In terms of price; American governments spend $38 billion each year to subsidize meat and dairy, but only 0.04% of that ($17 million) to subsidize fruits and vegetables. The federal government's Dietary Guidelines urge us to eat more fruits and vegetables and less cholesterol-rich food (that is, meat and dairy).
So if we allocated equivalent subsidies, we can receive our plant based foods at a fraction of the cost.

Also, Buddhist monks will eat meat if offered to them. They are not a suitable source to support veganism.

I think that less meat consumption will increase. Young people will live longer and will have fewer health issues if they adopt a Vegan diet. They will experience less arthritis, obesity, heart disease, constipation, etc. Veganism, isn't just driven by a save the planet mentality. It's a combination of new ideas that add up to a different environment and a different society. After 50 years of trying I finally found the courage to go Vegan.

If Beyond Meat uses 99% less water
, 93% less land, and nearly 50% less energy, then why does it cost 2 to 4 times as much as beef? I would love a more sustainable burger at a comparable, dare I say lower, price given the claims that production uses significantly fewer resources.

Yum, hyper processed foods full of hyper processed ingredients like isolated proteins and industrial vegetable oils. Plus transparency of sourcing or methods of plant production really aren’t part of the zeitgeist. So there’s not the slightest concern for soil health or ecosystem restoration. Heck, the hyper-processed ingredients in this hyper-processed food comes from industrially farmed mono-cultures.
There also seems to be little awareness of how the plant ingredients are modified. Do consumers have a clue how the pea proteins were extracted or the canola oil pressed?. Nope not a clue . To isolate the plant protein, fats, phytates, oligiosacharides, fiber all have to be removed from the peas, wheat, soy beans, etc. There are a number of ways to remove all of these other components. Defatting may include hexane or other solvents to obtain the deffated meal which is then dehydrated to create defatted flour. Various processes ( eg. Alkali extraction-isoelectric precipitation, Salt extraction-dialysis, Micellar precipitation) have been developed to further extract/isolate the protein from the flour. These processes may involve additional chemical solutions (e.g. sodium hydroxide also known as caustic lye), centrifuging, freeze drying and or ultra filtration. These different processes create isolated proteins that vary in protein content as well as different properties that make them more or less useful for various food products.
Is this healthy? It certainly isn’t the same as going out to the garden and picking some fresh peas. Other ingredients are equally dubious. Look at the hyper processed Beyond Meat Burger’s hyper processed ingredients:
Pea protein isolate, expeller pressed canola oil, refined coconut oil, water, yeast extract, maltodextrin, natural flavors, gum arabic, sunflower oil, salt, succinic acid, acetic acid, non-gmo modified food starch, cellulose from bamboo, methylcellulose, potato starch, beet juice extract (for color), ascorbic acid (to maintain color), annatto extract (for color), citrus fruit extract (to maintain quality), vegetable glycerin.
Pea protein as already discussed is the primary ingredient The second most prevalent ingredient is “expeller pressed” canola oil. Canola seeds can be pressed several ways. They can be cold pressed or expeller pressed. The seed oil can also be extracted with hexane. Hexane extracts the most oil. Hexane has some issues (short term exposure can cause dizziness and nausea while chronic exposure can damage one’s nervous system) , and hexane extraction is a longer process as shown in this video “How is it made- Canola Oil.” Expeller pressing with heat extracts more oil than the cold pressed method done at a lower temperature. Heat is a bit problematic. Seed oils like canola, soy bean, corn and sunflower oil are all polyunsaturated fats. When polyunsaturated fats are heated during the extraction of the oil or during cooking the single bonds break and the oils form plant sterol oxidation product [POPS]. These POPS effect membrane functioning and cause inflammation, thus they have been connected to arteriosclerosis. The ninth listed ingredient, sunflower oil, has similar issues. From a health perspective, oxidized extracted oil, that’s also heated to cook really isn’t a better alternative to naturally occurring saturated fats that are more stable when exposed to heat.
Or, in other words, using heat extracted expeller pressed canola in a product that’s heated in a pan isn’t exactly an healthier alternative to the real product which, in this case, is beef. The reality is that plant based products like Beyond Meat are really chemistry sets. Food science at its most devious purporting to be “healthy.” Maltodextrin, derived from wheat or corn starch is another winner. This thickener which is a white powder formed via partial hydrolysis, a process using water and acid, to break down the starches. Maltodextrin can also spike blood sugar. Then there are the “natural flavors.” What could possibly be wrong with “natural flavors.” Plenty, of course as this article, What Are Natural Flavors, Really, notes:
“…Added flavoring, both natural and artificial, could contain anywhere from 50 to 100 ingredients. And all of the extra ingredients in flavors often aren’t as innocent as you’d hope they would be. The mixture will often have some solvent and preservatives - and that makes up 80 to 90 percent of the volume [of the flavoring]. In the end product, it’s a small amount, but it still has artificial ingredients…”
Okay so maybe this hyper processed lab concoction isn’t really healthier for you, but certainly it is better for the environment and kills less animals, right? No not really. Industrial scale pea production basically is ecocide and creates dead zones. So Byeond Meat isn't good for your health or for the environment

The burgers patties are good and I like how they cook like meat. However, I would caution the other stuff that goes on a burger. Being and going "vegan" is very popular and the food companies know this. We might not be eating meat but the white bun, processed cheese (which usually isn't vegan), ketchep and all of that is the lease healthy part of the burger. I just want to caution to people that just because something isn't made from an animal means it's healthy in the context of what you eat it in.

Beyond Meat and Impossible Burgers are not health food. Neither is the cow flesh version. But if you are going to eat a burger, the plant based version will be much better for the environment, the animals, and a bit better for you. I worked at Carl's Jr. in 10th grade, and I loved their Famous Star. I became vegetarian in August 1991 when I was making hamburgers for a family bbq and when I was trying to wash the meat from between my fingers, I just started examining it. I had the epiphany that it was the flesh of another being, and I don't think I enjoyed that final hamburger (if I even ate it). Over the years I could smell the grilled meat when driving by Carl's Jr., and it's one of the few things I missed about meat. I don't even think it was that I missed the meat itself, but more the fulfilled feeling after eating it. Ordering a hamburger with the 'burger' on the side (for my dogs) and stuffing my french fries in the bun in its place was ok, but this is a game-changer. The next time I'm near a Carl's Jr. I will check out their vegan options!

If you can go from the plant to meat without the cow, that is a much more efficient process , especially if it can be done without a higher cost. Beyond meat is coming out as an ipo.

@@ELNANNA Why not get meat from a farm nearby? it is very unhealthy for kids to be vegan i hope you feed them other meat/fish. Or atleast eggs.. You can even get your own chickens! Lovely eggs. I hate the meat industrie and love animals, pay alot for meat from farmers nearby. And raw milk is very healthy.

@@Biefstukje It's not unhealthy for kids to be vegan. According to the American Dietetics Association and the American Pediatrics Association a well-planned plant-based diet can be healthful for all states of life. Btw, you can enjoy meat replacements and not commit to be vegan.

Conscious and healthy eating should be the future not quite veganism... how it is like today at least. I am on a plant based diet but still these burgers are not that convincing for me to switch for eating grinded trees just because I am not eating meat and other animal products. It's just a change from worst to worse. For me even if it tastes nice it's not an option. Though I am not against of anybody who taste it and like it. If you eat it, enjoy! 👍
