    I've seen a couple of BP contenders. TPOD, Belfast, Spencer, Dune... King Richard was the top movie that made me feel amazing. It's also a damn good movie. I honestly think in a year where I don't really think any movie blows my mind, it could sweep in and be a contender or even win BP. It's a film most people will love and feel inspired by.

    I really enjoyed King Richard. This a feel good inspirational film about one of the greatest sport stories of all time that not one but 2 African American girls that can come out of Compton and be tennis champions coached by a father who self taught them from tennis books, magazines and videos. Will Smith is terrific as Richard Williams in what I think is the performance of his career and he certainly has the narrative to win as this will be his 3rd nomination for Best Actor in what will probably be a Best Picture nominee. I think Aunjanue Ellis is going to get in as well as she offered great support as his wife Oracene and she looked so much like her. Also I really liked Jon Bernthal as the tennis coach Rick Macci who developed the girls games. The film while being a crowd pleasing type film is a bit generic so I think it will get in for Best Picture because they have 10 nominees I don’t think it will win Best Picture but I do think this film does give Will Smith his best chance so far at Oscar gold.

    I loved this movie! I went in looking forward to a good story and performances. I came out inspired and in awe of amazing performances. I dont know about you all, but to me i felt like this movie played in real-time. When the parents argued or any of the family scenes it was as if i was sitting there with them. It was outstanding. I wouldn’t at all be mad if it won best picture.

    I’ve seen people dunking on this year as a weak crop of movies but I don’t agree at all. The only awards movies to open near me so far are King Richard, Belfast, Dune, and Spencer and I would put every one of these movies over every movie nominated last year. I thought the 2020 batch was really weak but this is shaping up to be a strong year. If 3 out of Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, Don’t Look Up, or West Side Story deliver the goods this could be a super strong year in my opinion.

    Yeah I don't buy this winning any screenplay awards. This obsession pundits have with crowd pleasers is just nonsensical (I hope this doesn't age badly). With Licorice Pizza in contention I highly doubt Belfast is getting original screenplay and The Power of the Dog is being bafflingly underestimated despite it being the current director and adapted screenplay frontrunner for good reason (the divisiveness is overexaggerated ). I don't see how Will picking transformative roles like this isn't interesting? Because roles like this aren't something he "always" goes for. We can count on one hand of how many roles he has like this. Ali, Concussion and now King Richard. Most actors pick "safe" roles anyway. They gotta work to their own advantage. But I will say, he's never been a thespian, never grew up with an "actor mindset", or grew up with the idea of being an actor's actor. He's always had the box office mindset, and those type of movies are always "safe". But even if this role is safe for him, it shouldn't mean his performance isn't great or interesting or worth watching.

      To me it wasn't that safe. Although Richard Williams was a good man and a good father with wisdom and pride. Unlike the other characters Will Smith have portrayed in the past, Richard Williams was a multi layered complicated man with several flaws. He was stubborn at times, overbearing, and we discover as the movie went on that he had several other children that he did not have relationships with. He also had a past that haunted him that effected how he raised Venus and Serena pushing them to their limits to the extreme. To me Will Smith's most powerful scene is when he bared his soul to Venus. He finally confesses his past trauma and fears that had followed him into fatherhood once he finally realize he was holding his daughter back. He had to let Venus go forward to the next level. This was the most multi layered character I ever seen Will Smith portray. And he did it effortlessly! He deserves that Oscar.

    Really hoping it does not get into original screenplay or Director. I do not need that in my life. But it seems pretty unlikely that it doesn't get screenplay at this point (I would cheer if it drops out of the category and makes way for something like C'mon C'mon/Worst Person/Mass). Huge lock for Best Picture and might get every nomination including the BAFTA. It might win the Golden Globe if Belfast competes in Comedy/Musical. I also think this and Licorice Pizza have a better chance at winning the Producers Guild over Belfast because I have a hard time thinking they're gonna fall this easily for the obvious bait, especially when it doesn't have that kind of passion that other films like it had that propelled them to frontrunner status. Then again, PGA didn't give it to Roma or Jojo Rabbit so can't say that they're bored of this shit.

      @@MisterFoxx I have Belfast, Licorice Pizza, Don't Look Up, King Richard and Spencer in my top 5. Recently the writer's branch has kept sticking to Best Picture nominees in the screenplay categories, and that's why I have Spencer in over C'mon C'mon because it's more likely to get BP. It's definitely still not impossible that C'mon C'mon could get it, because the Academy nominated Mike Mills for 20th Century Women without it getting Best Picture or any other prior screenplay nominations from major bodies. It was a pleasant surprise.

    I don't understand why you don't agree with people having the ability to overcome barriers in their lives in order to better themselves and their situation in life. It was just kind of vague the way you said it. If you don't have that sort of mindset you won't really get anywhere in trying to better the adversaries and overcome whatever discrimination or barriers facing you. I was just wondering what barriers and "societal" discrimination people are facing right now today, that stops them from striving to make a better life for themselves. I just was confused what you meant in making this claim.

    • @TheOscarExpert
      @TheOscarExpert  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Brother bro here - it’s a good question. I agree it’s important to encourage people to achieve their dreams through hard work, even when they have a disadvantage compared to others. And you have to have that mindset in order to be extraordinary. Here’s where I think the shortcomings of this mindset lie. Our society says that each person’s success is completely proportionate to the amount of work they put in. So not achieving success is a personal failure of willpower. This mindset is applied very brutally towards black people and other racial groups to say “they are poor because they haven’t worked hard enough”. This completely ignores the fact that different factors objectively produce different outcomes. Consider education. In well funded “rich town” schools, most kids graduate. In poor, underfunded schools, the majority might not. This cannot be understood by the presence of a “hustle culture” mindset or lack thereof. It’s because one group is financially depressed which comes with a whole host of other factors. There 100% will be successful people / anomalies coming out of these terrible situations but it’s a poor indicator on the health of that community. Today, black people as a whole face more disparities than white people in just about every area simply by virtue of where they are born and their lack of financial assets (this is statistically a fact that they have much much less wealth out of the gate). At the very least this is an inheritance problem since white society has been allowed to be financially prosperous for all of society’s history whereas for black people were fighting financial discrimination even after civil rights were passed (that’s a whole history I can’t detail). But at it’s worst (and I think this is the society we live in), these majority black communities continue to be neglected by those who have financial power (white people as a whole - I know not all white people are rich). Education is one of many factors where majority black communities have it so much worse. The lack of urgency to do anything about it is part of racism in my opinion. It’s also been studied that poverty is a cycle and without stimulus it’s extremely difficult for people to pick themselves up and get out. Basic example - you open a restaurant in your poor neighborhood but no one has money to buy anything so you go out of business. Alternatively you can open it in a richer (whiter) neighborhood, but then you’re not employing and stimulating YOUR community anymore. And because there are things we can actually do to make people’s lives less shitty, this is where the “individual achievement” argument becomes pernicious. It’s used as an excuse to say “hey let’s do nothing”. But in my opinion, people in power have a moral obligation to do something because this is white society’s fault for being horrible to black people throughout history (again this did not end at civil rights). Hope that makes more sense!

    I don't think I will ever be able to take Will Smith seriously as an actor.
    I will just always see the wise-cracking joker Will Smith not the character he's trying to play.

    That beyonce song is so awful. So bad, worse than spirit from lion king. I don't see it getting a nomination. Billie eilish James bond soundtrack is winning best original song.

    Bullshit. Not a single honest bone in this movie, it paints a one sided, rosy picture of Richard Williams and of their childhood. And of course not a single mention of Venus and Serena having muscles like two powerful men when they were dominating the female tennis world, resembling Martina Navratilova.

    Why is Belfast more likely to be nominated for directing than King Richard? Because one involves a black family and white family stories are more oscar worthy while black family movies are more Kids Choice Awards worthy? Both are family stories. The only difference is one film is shoot in black and white.

      You really have no fucking clue what film directing is. The exquisite craftsmanship on display in Belfast is leagues ahead of the TV-movie compositions in King Richard.

    Beyonce will not win an oscar for that mediocre song . I've heard better original songs from other films this year. Even if she is nominated, she will face heavy competition from wayyy better songs and most likely not win
